Is Living Plan-Free in Thailand a Mistake?

  • Welcome back to my channel, today, we're tackling a topic that's been on my mind ever since I embarked on this incredible journey - Is living in Thailand long-term under 50 and before retirement a genius move or just a risky gamble? 🤔 Let's break it down and get real about this life-changing decision!
You guys know me - I'm not your typical 9-to-5 desk jockey, and I'm definitely not banking on a massive pension to swoop in when I hit the golden years!. Nope, I'm the kind of person who believes in living life on my own terms. So, I took that leap of faith, packed my bags, and set my sights on the land of Thailand!
That's the reality I've chosen for myself - a life filled with unforgettable experiences, new friendships, and endless opportunities for personal growth. Okay, let's address the elephant in the room - the skeptics who might think that living it up in Thailand before retirement age is just a reckless move and i can see that also. I don’t have any plan or direction in the future, but i’m at a stage in life where i’m happy with that, the unknown.
    Let talk……

    42. Been living in CM working as a teacher for the past 6yrs. Only planned on staying 9 months or so. Married now. Have 1.9 yr old son. I've lost out financially by living here, but no amount of money could replace the experiences I've had living here for 6 years. Cheers.

You are winning at life Wayne. I was making a 6 figure salary in the UK 'in the matrix' focused on my career and 'progressing'- new house, new lease car, ibiza holidays etc.... working long hours and living for the weekend. Thanks to your videos I was inspired to simplify my life and live frugally in Thailand enjoying nature and relaxing. Guess what? I am much happier here and have no desire to go back to the rat race.

Mixed feelings. On one hand I find your decision to live the way you do inspiring. On the other hand, you do have to keep your future well being in mind. If your financial situation is one where you will have enough income to sustain yourself even minimally in the future then I say keep doing what you love. Money isn’t everything and freedom is priceless. Take it easy, mate.

Yes, it's a 50/50 balance, I suppose a bit of both would be the answer. Go with the flow but have some sort of plan. As long as I'm happy, I'm all good. Cheers Earl.

Being 70 and broke in Thailand is probably not much fun, but the same could happen back home in the UK and that life would be even worse. I think you're doing just fine, enjoying life for what it is. If you can retire early, great. If you can't, there's nothing wrong with doing a bit of work to keep a roof over your head. There are always new opportunities to be seized

I watched your show from the states for several years, amongst other YT bloggers in TH and it took me a few years to make the move. I knew it was the best thing for me and watching your show brought back all the good memories from being in Thailand. Now I'm opening up my own business here and excited for the next chapter. The west doesn't want you to know that living abroad is alot less stressful than these over packed big cities.

Another great vlog, Wayne. I think you’re a pioneer! Things have changed. People even in their 20s and 30s are not only questioning things but they’re acting on them, moving to another country and taking risks because the “old” ways don’t make sense anymore. And technology allows them to make some money remotely. Only time will tell if it will work out. I’m Thai, 57, been living in the US for over 40 years and I’ll be slowly moving back as well. I”m glad you’re there sending us these vlogs so we can see what’s happening in CM in real time. Keep going for as long as it makes you happy 😊. Cheers 😊!!

Wayne, all I can say is you seem happier and more content then 99% of the people that I encounter every day. How you're achieving that doesn't really matter, it's the results that count. How many people are spending their lives slaving away to achieve a "dream" that society says they should have, which btw is becoming almost impossible to achieve these days anyway. I've been watching your videos since the very beginning. You are truly inspiring to me because I see myself in you. A simple guy wanting a simple life, and just to be free and happy. Your channel is one of the most authentic out there. I am currently working on building my nest egg to move to Thailand, mostly because I don't want to ever have to return to the US. Having the courage to do what makes you happy takes guts and might not always be easy but I can't think of anything more rewarding.

I’m envious of your lifestyle because I’m a similar age to you, I’m 49.
I did everything I was supposed to; studied, worked hard, found a woman to share my life with, had kids and as some would say, living a life of quiet desperation.…then there was a breakup, and that’s when my life ended and it became the life of my ex to toy with. Mental games ensued and felt like I was being held ransom with emotional blackmail for 18 years and watched my life pass one miserable day at a time while my ex took great glee in making anything and everything as difficult for me as possible.
Only recently (in the last year or two) have the child maintenance payments ended and I’ve had a bit more money in my pocket, but now I find that no matter how much I’m earning, it’s only just enough to get by. I worry that if I continue like I am, days will turn into weeks, which will turn into months and years, and before I know it I’ll either be too old to travel and six feet under.
In hindsight I wish I threw caution to the wind when I was younger, wasn’t so responsible, and lived my life.

Glad I come across this I can relate. Thanks Wayne! I am 30yo from Melbourne Australia and I just want out. Just did 1 month in Bali and can never look at life here the same. Just love the Asian way of life so simple and laid back. Have been seriously unhappy here for years.
Getting a lot of pressure from family and friends to do the standard life here work 9-5, get married, have kids and just have 4 weeks holiday a year. But I just can’t see myself doing it.
Fortunately I’ve worked hard since high school and invested in real estate young so got a good chunk of money to support me.
Guess the only thing holding me back is feeling like I’m wasting time by going over there and not growing my wealth anymore. But what for at the end of the day to buy an overpriced house somewhere I don’t want to be.
Looking at going over there for 3-6 months now and see where it takes me!

I came to Thailand without any real plan in 2005 aged 49 and still here at 67. I knew the money would eventually run out without a job or some form of income. Fortunately, at 55 my pension came to rescue and at 66 the UK state pension. Now financially secure with no debts and more income than expenditure.

Where problems can set in is if you have responsibilities for other people like a partner and children. Even so there are people in this position that still do it. If you are single your options change because you get to decide everything, like you can sleep on the beach and eat rice and bananas but you couldn't do that with 3 kids! I had material comforts but after travelling for years I found I was coming to Thailand with only carry on luggage, then I realised all my things at home weren't part of my day to day existence. Everyone has their own story and needs and for me like you freedom to make choices is the most important thing to me. I just don't want to die owning lots of things and being a slave to them to the end.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  Před 11 měsíci

Yes, that true, I've been able to do this because I don't have any responsibilities. It's hard if you have a family and kids. I'm the same with all the belongings, the moment I got rid of all the crap I didn't need, I was happier. Thanks 👍

I used to visit Thailand every year for a month with plans to retire in CM in 2020.
Then came covid with all the restrictions and 4 years passed and I was unable to revisit for one reason or another - life!
However, I've made it and now currently in Thailand 😊 (Samui) on a 3 month visa to see if its still for me and on day one I already knew it was 😊
I will be heading to CM shortly for approx 7 weeks to look at areas to live for when i apply for a retirement visa.
I'm a young 54, not rich at all but worked hard all my life and saved wisely to live my dream.
Lives too short, you never know what's round the corner and the UK is finished as a country.

For all I now have and have seen in my 70 years I can honestly say living here with absolutely no plans is MY idea of paradise!!! Been here going on 8 years and wake up each and every day KNOWING this is as close to paradise on earth as you can get. I am fortunate to have the ability to live well anywhere but I would live HERE in a dam hostel if I had to. Wayne, I think it is wonderful what you are doing! Life is too short. If you can do it, good on you! And you're young enough, you could always go back for a while. If I felt comfortable, I would retire this minute. I am 56, and the clock is ticking. I also don't seem to fit the mold. I lived in Asia for quite a few years as a kid. I came back to Asia to live and work when I graduated school. Then I was convinced by my family that I should move back to the US and develop 'roots'. Well, it really didn't work for me. About seven years ago, I realized that I could just sort of float along the river of life and be alright, or I could take a risk and move back overseas. This time I moved to Europe, but kept up the grind. I really wanted it all, but now I am just tired of it, and am trying to build up the funds to move permanently (probably to Chiang Mai). My problem is that I am probably at the age that if I try to live there for three years or so, and try to come back to another well-paying job, I probably won't be able to get one at that age. Of course, one can always find something. I really wanted to have something that bring in a little income stream on the side, and I had thought of doing a VLOG like you. I've been hearing recently that that might not be possible on a retirement visa. Anyway, I really enjoy the work you do and hope you keep it up!

Hi Wayne, Charlie from Boston, USA. I love your videos. I am only halfway through this video, but I feel compelled to reach out brother You don’t need a plan mate you just need some balls. Which you got. You are who you are.. no ones approval is needed. I visited a friend down in Florida hes retired living on a golf course with a big car watching Fox News every day, counting his money. Hes One of the saddest unhappiest men I know. He was instrumental in helping me decide to travel. I’ve been going to Mexico for two years. I just returned to my house in Boston. I am planning a trip to Thailand. I am 60 and just getting by brother ‘s but I get a check every month. My daughters are grown and living In other states I lost my wife three years next month. If you do not control your destiny, someone else will… whether it’s a woman or your “friends” or a news channel, a country or a culture. It is men like you that encourage me Wayne… to continue to go where my courage & my balls bring me. 10 out of 10 of your friends are pretty sure they know what’s best for you Wayne. And their heads are so far up their ass. …They can’t see the light of day. many of my friends are loaded with money. It doesn’t make them happy and it doesn’t make them successful. Most are miserable. Arguing about politics fighting with their old ladies brother. Keep moving forward Wayne & never look back.. you have a great spirit brother. If our paths cross while I’m in Thailand, I would love to buy you a cup of coffee or a meal brother. Keep on trucking. 😊 Peace

I am 37, planning to go to Thailand again this fall, and probably not go back to my home country for any significant amount of time in the foreseeable future.
But I do have a steady income that will stay with me until the day that I die. I am not tied to any specific place to receive this income.
I don't need a plan, as long as I do not spend more than my income is. But I wouldn't be able to do that in a "normal" life either.
However, I realize most people probably need some sort of plan, initially. But I also think that you can change plans as you go, and see new opportunities.

There's nothing left to come back for now anyway. I primarily came back for the security of my daughter's schooling & our health care. Health care (NHS) is going fast. You can no longer get a NHS Dentist, that'll be all private within 2/3 years, & how much longer before hospitals follow suit? Schools are struggling, We are fortunate in our area that the schools are still good. My daughter is now 10, once she's 18/20 we'll be back in Thailand, make no bones about that. If you came back, you'd last a year tops.

I'm 52 already. I currently live in San Francisco, CA. I lived in Thailand for a few years previously way back in 2004-2006 where I was teaching. I really enjoyed it and miss it. Since then, I been a teacher for the most part here in San Francisco.
I am similar to you where I hopped around at points in my life where I went from job to job and have had periods of unemployment.
I am currently unemployed and been debating taking the plunge back to SE Asia. Maybe Vietnam instead.
I have a decent savings but have some obligations here. Also, as you described, it's like I have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other! The Devil's whispering in my ear: "Just go!" While the Angel is whispering the opposite!...LoL.
I been trying to switch careers to Govt. or something with a good retirement path so I'll be set in my golden years. But I do think about SE Asia a lot! I have to decide soon.

As long as you are realistic about what retiring in Thailand is really like, then you should remain happy. Thailand has changed so much in the last decade (and not always for the better) and will continue to change. People often get caught in the trap of comparing the “then” against the “now” which makes them second guess their decision.
Wherever you go - there you are. Thailand is great to retire to, but you still must live and adapt as you would anywhere else.

@@WalkAboutWayne Right, exactly. But it sounds like now you want a more abundant lifestyle in Thailand. This may require new ways of thinking. Ex. "I don't have to limit myself to getting by on the small amount I have coming in from back home. Instead can earn $XX/month from CZcams and other income streams so I can afford my dream lifestyle in SE Asia"... 53. Took two months holiday there traveled all around, kinda sussing out potential places to live. I have enough to live there if I wanted to long term. But... it was fun travelling around, nice food, sightseeing, few bars and massage here and there. I thought to myself, what the hell will I do here every day? I don't think I can do the breakfast, do not want to be another YT'er chilling the whole day, need to have some kind of routine, sure could join groups and get involved in things. One thing I really missed was CLEAN air!! Was so sick of cars everywhere and pollution, up country would be better but for me, I can't give up my life back home, i.e. no way will "Sell the farm" and come to Thailand, the risk of financial failure is too high, better I think is to come there when I feel like it and take it from there, see if things can work may do ed visa or even PT teaching work for adults, which is a lot easier than high school which I did before. You also need to understand that life is cheap there and I don't just mean prices.

      @WalkAboutWayne  Před 10 měsíci

Nice! Everyone has their path and Thailand isn't for everyone. I been here nearly 5 years, so this feels like home. I would probably give it more than 2 months to get a real feel for Thailand. I agree though, it can get lonely and boring here if you don't have things to do.

Key is having constant money generation method in place while enjoying life in the Asia, otherwise you will drain your savings within few years' times in Asia and then you have to go back your home country to start the life from the scratch with very little money in hand! this situation would be even more stressful to entire future life. So, I think enjoying or retiring in the Asia long term for most guys will need lot of advance planning and executing over the years with patient!

Dude, you're part of this new career that has been carved out in life called "Digital Nomad". You, me and millions of other people have family and friends who will never be part of that and never understand that new career. YOU DON'T NEED TO LIVE IN ENGLAND AND GRIND IT OUT DAY AFTER DAY. Stay there, be digital, keep us happy and see what happens :) !!

In something like what we have---I R A. It really buluds up over 20 years. It generally follows the top 500 of rhe stock market. I started one whe n I was 50. But had to dip into it. Glad it was rhere. Anyway, think of all rhe people you have, and will meet. So i hope to see you all over SEA. Thanks.

I had first planned to retire in Chiang Mai for a few years, until I could start receiving my pension from the U.S. My thought was that if I'm not saving money while I'm working in California anyway, why not stop working and live in beautiful Chiang Mai on the small amount of savings I have? And then when I could receive my pension, I could move back to the U.S. Now, Covid killed that plan, but I totally understand why you are in CM! The people who criticize you should mind their own business. I think they just envy you, Wayne! 👏

@@WalkAboutWayne I think people don't believe how cheaply you can live a nice life in CM, they think it's just hype. The week I had to spend in quarantine in Phuket was more expensive, but my monthly cost was only $1200 and I lived in an expensive area & got my apartment on Airbnb. If someone lives in a more local area and waits until they arrive to rent their apartment, $800 could provide a very nice life.
