      you should try making self-igniting thermite by mixing potassium permanganate in and then pouring on glycerine or making a contraption to do it for you. I know potassium permanganate+glycreine works to set off thermite, but I have no idea if this idea would work. it would still be a cool video though

    • @Ekscentrix
      @Ekscentrix Před 7 lety +32

      Alexander Brozel, totally a thought I had too. Decreasing the exit hole would increase the amount of time it takes for the pressure inside the bottle to equal the pressure outside the bottle. Maybe a slightly higher risk of the bottle exploding before take off, but Grant could put an"X" cut in the lid as a relief, so if the pressure builds too high, the cuts would break and allow the lid to open up. This might help the pressure exit the opening, rather than exploding the bottle.

  • @Unmannedair
    @Unmannedair Před 7 lety +66

    if you drilled a hole to create a choke, then you'll get less thrust, but for a lot longer. the result is a more efficient rocket that will fly much higher.

    • @artonshala5212
      @artonshala5212 Před 7 lety +2

      It wouldn't fly

    • @Unmannedair
      @Unmannedair Před 7 lety +9

      Arton Shala actually it would. the propane would reach a higher static pressure which would increase the nozzle velocity. a higher exit velocity means more thrust with less fuel over a longer impulse.

    • @jakeflorence2005
      @jakeflorence2005 Před 7 lety +2

      Unmannedair the rocket would go upwards the same exact distance. The bigger hole will just get it there faster. To calculate the acceleration of a rocket you take resultant force divided by mass.
      Lets say we have a 1kg rocket that produces 20N of thrust upwards. It also has 10N of weight downwards. A resultant force of 10N upwards. 10 ÷ 1 is obviously 10ms^-2. So lets say the initial size of hole gives you 2 seconds of thrust, at that acceleration the rocket has gone 30 m after this time. Now, if we double the size of the hole, we double the thrust upwards. So we have an upward force of 40N now giving us a resultant force of 30N upwards. 30ms^-2. But since the hole is twice the size the propellant escapes at twice the rate of the original rocket so you get half the thrust time. 1 second. And there you go, 30m in 1 second vs. 30m in 2 seconds.

    • @jakeflorence2005
      @jakeflorence2005 Před 7 lety +3

      Aiden Connally rocket propulsion doesn't work like that. Also if you had a smaller hole the gas would escape slower. The gas pushing on the walls of the coke container is what propels it. If the container is sealed then the forces exerted on the bottle are equal in every direction. If you make a hole in the bottle, there is no force acting on the walls there (as there is no wall) so the force in the other direction is still the same as before but greater than the force acting on where you made the hole, so the force isnt balanced equally in all directions. This makes the rocket go in the opposite direction of the hole. However, the smaller the hole the more wall there is left to push on in that direction, so the forces are closer to being balanced and the rocket doesn't go as fast.

    • @jakeflorence2005

    Objects in free fall are weightless because they're not supported by anything, so the density of the different liquids doesn't matter. If you take a big jug like from a water dispenser, fill it with water, oil, solids like cork, lego pieces, marbles, lead, then mix it around and then throw it to another person, you will see that as long as it's in the air, the pieces inside behave like in space, and as soon as the other person catches it, they separate according to their densities. Cool experiment to try with a slomo camera

    • @radulescubg
      @radulescubg Před 7 lety

      Cooking With Cows you are kinda right, kinda not. Half half. In 0 gravity, the water and oil would still separate, or cause it's the different densities. Somehow. It's a bit more complex, but that's the main Ideea. The oil wouldn't go up or down, cuz in 0 grav you don't have that point of reference, but it would go on the outside of the water. Also. When he flips the bottle, you need to take in to consideration another fluid. The air. Air wants to go in, witch makes the coke and butane mix faster

    • @stevenboelke6661
      @stevenboelke6661 Před 7 lety

      bogdan radulescu oil is hydrophobic and so it'll seek to avoid contact with water. density determines which liquid sits on top of the other. oil is the less dense of the two and so would float on water.

    the reason the propan failed is not the gas but time.
    the coke was frozen at the top by the propane, creating a sheet of ice and cola syrup.
    this prevented the two liquids from mixing.
    this prevented the propane to be heated to vaporization, by the coke as they mixed.
    time was the factor, not the propane or butane.

    You could take advantage of the delayed reaction. Instead of holding on to the bottle, drop it upside down into a pipe. You now have a mortar that can be aimed and possibly accurately ranged by controlling the amount of butane.

    The drop test didn't work because the butane and coke fall at the same speed so they don't mix until it hits the ground

    • @perpetualengine
      @perpetualengine Před 7 lety +4

      10asti10 I don't think it has to do with mixing. Because it's not a reaction between the two that propels the bottle. It's the pressure held in by the coke but applied to the inside top wall of the rocket. The reason it won't blast off in free fall is simply the coke isn't holding in the pressure since the bottle is falling at the same speed as the coke. Once the bottle hits the ground the coke seals the opening and the pressure can build.

    • @mysteryman7877
      @mysteryman7877 Před 7 lety +2

      perpetualengine yes, and what should happen is the following:
      1) A slower tip over. This will give time for the reaction to start.
      2) A longer drop time. This will give the reaction as much time as it needs.
      Physics makes a lot of really cool things really hard to do.

    • @B10401
      @B10401 Před 7 lety

      the mixing does cause it to heat up a lot faster even though it doesn't react.

    • @ChristopherNewman63

      i think he should be pushing the bottom of the bottle up before it tips, making the bottle hit its turning point (v = 0) as the bottle turns upside down (a bit later than just letting it fall). this would give more time for the reaction to take place.

      @VicSC300 Před 7 lety +1

      +1 - I was going to suggest this myself. I'd like to see him drill holes in the caps then put them on to increase nozzle pressure and allow the propellent (coke) to last longer which should enhance the specific impulse and increase the ▲V to get those rockets up there!

    • @5thDragonDreamCaster
      @5thDragonDreamCaster Před 7 lety

      The bottle won't explode unless the coke is steaming hot. Once enough pressure builds up, the butane stops boiling. Watch "Liquid Butane Poured and Stored in a Soda Bottle', it explains why the butane stays liquid inside the bottle despite having a boiling point of just below water's freezing point under normal conditions.

    You cant drop it, because while it falls it experiences momentary zero gees which makes the less dense butane unable to float to the top.

    • @unbeatable4224
      @unbeatable4224 Před 7 lety +2

      Loba Rosa Correct, but that becomes irrelevant without gravity.
      This little trick only works because, as grant explains, the less dense butane floats and expands pushing the soda out like a jet.
      But if it is accelerating at the same speed and in the same direction as gravity (i.e. falling) then gravity has no effect. Its like a flag that will flap in the wind if it is still, but if you move the flag with the wind at the same speed nothing happens.

    • @unbeatable4224
      @unbeatable4224 Před 7 lety +2

      If he put a little parachute on the bottle it would probably slow the bottle down enough that there would be enough gee force to allow the butane to float to the top before it hits the ground. With any luck the launch would flatten the parachute until the propellant ran out and the chute could redeploy.

      I tried this with pressurized air and there is going to be a goldilocks zone for the diameter of the hole.
      Bbut decreasing that diameter will increase thrust up to a point.
      Release velocity is going to be limited by the pressure created.
