A reviewer with Rolling Stone once said "Karen Carpenter's voice is like the sound of a lover whispering in your ear." I still get chills when I hear her singing, and I graduated high school in 1978.

Karen Carpenter has something haunting about her vioce it's a unique sound that's hard to forget, wherever you are in the world it's instantly recognisable, her brother and her had a real brother and sister closeness and both had musical talents, good to see you looking so well Lizzie.

I'm glad you are discovering the artists of the 1970s. It was truly a good time in history for music. I graduated high school in 1975, and I felt like the world shuddered on its axis when I learned of Karen Carpenter's death. Some of her music seems so melancholy in perspective. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and impressions.

One of the top female voices of all time. Gone to soon. She passed at age 32 of eating disorder. Karen's is smooth and rich contrallo voice which is a low pitched. She can sing an emotion which alot of singers don't do well. She is unique. She can switch from chest voice to head voice easily. From octave to octave. The best!! Do more please.

Her brother did the arrangements on all their music, they had great chemistry. Her drum talent was highly respected by the best drummer of the 60’s-70’s, Buddy
Rich. Her death was so tragic, she suffered from an eating disorder which back in those days
    was unknown and because they
really had no treatment lead to her death. 🙏🏻✝️❤️

Lizzie, it is so reassuring to see young people with open minds like you, listening to the legendary Carpenters, the best- selling musical act of the 1970's. Your analysis of their music is intelligent and respectful. The Carpenters' performances are timeless. So many of the songs they chose to record have become popular music standards. Lizzie, thank you for sharing their music and helping to preserve their incomparable musical legacy.

I saw the Carpenters in 1972. Karen sang and drummed at the same time. I was blown away to see Karen sing and drum. She drummed and sang at the same level as Phil Collins or Levon Helm, check out on CZcams her cover of the Beatles Help and Dancing in the Streets. Karen was known for recording a song in one take. In other words, the first take was perfect. Check out the song Superstar-he recording is the first take. She read the lyrics of the song off either a napkin or envelope. I think the very best song Karen sang is Trying to get the Feeling Again. The song was lost and then found by Richard --he released it 11 years after Karen died and 19 years after it had been recorded. It is on CZcams. At one point, you hear her turn the page on the music sheets.

You certainly chose a wonderful song to play for us, Lizzie The Gangster Hippie and The Stuffed Squad.
When you're posting a video, I listen to the lyrics calmly and serenely. I have lost count of how many times that I've heard "Rainy Days and Mondays".
As I listened along with you Lizzie, I finally heard and understood:
"What I've Got Has Come And Gone Before"
Up until your video, all I understood was that Rainy days and Mondays make her sad.
I need for you to know that I appreciate your videos, Lizzie. On top of the serene feeling I get. I know how much you 'prepare' before each of your videos.

Karen was a good drummer, but she didn't play on most of their studio sessions. In this song, Hal Blaine was playing drums. The Carpenters used the famous "Wrecking Crew" of LA studio musicians that included Glen Campbell for a while. Hal Blaine played on in the vicinity of 35,000 sessions. Karen could have played, but she certainly wouldn't have played during the recording of her voice, because the drums would bleed into her voical mike. She would be in a separate vocal booth during the recordings which in those days were played live - i.e. everyone playing at the same time. That is as opposed to today where most records are recorded by different players in different locations at different times overdubbing their parts. Karen did play in their live performances for some of the songs, but when she came out front to sing (which she hated to do) the backup drummer was no other than Cubby O'Brien who was "Cubby" on the original Mickey Mouse Club who used to bang everything with drum sticks.
