  • Jennifer Batten comes to the Sam Ash Spotlight to talk about the Fishman Triple Play Wireless Midi Guitar System. Watch Jennifer discuss her history with Synth Guitar from her days playing with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck. Jennifer praises the compact form factor of the Fishman Triple Play and how it has transformed the ability of artists to play this style of guitar while on tour.
    Watch Jennifer play through some great riffs using just the Triple Play and her laptop. Jennifer also explains how to divide the guitar up into quadrants to create full arrangements with Bass, Synth, Drum, and Guitar each assigned to a distinct quadrant.

    Was thinking about this system, seeing that Batten is endorsing the product was enough to convince me. She is one of those guitar players that doesn't get nearly the recognition she deserves, she is an amazing musician and you will never hear anyone play with better feel.

    I caught everything when I saw Jeff, RIP. It was amazing to hear those synth sounds coming from her guitar. Blew me away. I had no idea what was going on, how was she doing that? I went out and got a GK-3. This IS the next step in that evolution! She also went toe-to-toe with Jeff, until he turned and walked away. She was on her Game. Great concert.

    Thank you, Jennifer, for the demonstration. - In particular for mentioning that you could drive a hardware synth without a computer in between. You had me check the manual of the FC-1 foot controller, and it states so with a diagram.
    Note that two people at Fishman didn't understand my question, and that someone at Thomann said it couldn't be done. EDIT: I misinterpreted Thomann's response.

    I purchased the Fender Strat with factory fitted Fishman TP. Early days but so far, very frustrating. The unit seems to bundled with a very small amount of tones and everything seems to require a download which can take hours. At the moment live use seems fraught with time consuming set up problems. I feel the public are Beta testing this product. The wireless idea is awesome but I'm afraid the absolute ease of use delivered by Roland GR55 is making the FTP seem like an in the house toy.

I guess at this point I was kind of waiting to see it they would come out with a new and improved unit but I guess they just update it from time to time? Its been out for a number of years now. Also, anyone know what that thing is that she flipped up and down at the bottom of the neck?

      Hell, you can assign different instruments to different strings....OR.....even assign different instruments to different frets on the SAME string......CRAZY Amazing!!! Talk about being a one-man band.....you can play different guitars, piano/synth, bass, and even Drums at the Same Time!!!! That is just Wicked Awesome!!!

      @Hexendude1994 Před 7 lety +1

      Simple string dampener... idk why she is using such a strange device, perhaps to appear fancy. The great dave martone just uses a fuzzy hair band and I can testify it works! and is better, you can move the hair string up and down the strings (similar to a capo, but doesn't actually hold the strings down) and do some crazy harmonic effects..

    • @crimsun7186
      @crimsun7186 Před 6 lety

      Problem is...The hair tie thing doesn't work when you have a locking nut. It gets in the way when you try to push the tie off the neck.

      @javathemocha Před 6 lety

      This video isn't very representative of her work. She uses that pad on a lever as a string dampener to kill open-string ring out.
      Not that important for most, but her tapping skills are INSANE. Check out the tapping riff on Jeff Beck, "What Mama Said". It contains a lot of 2 and 3-finger tapping on lower strings...which would ordinarily send the higher strings into resonance or accidental vibrations...thus ruining the "clean" sound.

    WAIT BEFORE YOU BUY... Fishman stopped doing business with East West, so all of the great sounds you hear.... you do not get. I got one this week April /2022, and am sending it back. Basically, all the old libraries have had their plug ins removed so they do not work. All you get is a Synth app and a Few Native Sound Packages. Basically all of the vids from Sam Ash , Sweetwater, and everywhere else are all dated. Emailed with Fishman's Tech support for hours (They won't answer the phone). Basically the Triple Play software is garbage at this point and I had to reinstall it 4 times to get the basic plug -ins to work becuase it still tries to install legacy libraries . Wasted 8 hours of actual Playing time on screwing with software, which I do every day at work. ... very disappointed.

    • @mrjteele
      @mrjteele Před 2 lety +1

      I saw this same frustrated post from you on other TriplePlay videos. Just to be clear, yes you are correct that TriplePlay is no longer bundled with the same software, and yes EastWest no longer offers their MIDI guitar series, but it seems to me that you are being overly negative. Fishman is not trying to trick you. The installer asks you to click skip (i.e. skip installing the legacy patches) if this is a new installation, so it tries to help you avoid this. I get it, if you just click through the prompts without reading you can get a library of patches installed that won't work. And yes, TriplePlay has been out for years, and the bundled content has changed, so now older CZcams videos are not fully up to date. But consider that the TriplePlay software has been updated for free many times, for example we just introduced support for VST3 format. And consider that we developed a free iPad app "Connect" for TriplePlay. And consider that you can (for example) sign up for EastWest's composer cloud package, which I think is $20/month and get thousands of great sounds, or you can purchase NI's Komplete bundle, or many folks already have tons of virtual instrument plugins, or hardware synths, and some are savvy $$$ savers and download any of hundreds (maybe thousands) of free VST VI plugins. TriplePlay is first and foremost a guitar MIDI controller, and can work with just about anything. The latest free plugin for Mac and Windows I just came across is really quite good, called Numa Player by Studiologic, which also works on iPad; give it a try!

    Looks good. But I read the warnings about endless downloading and set up glitches. No doubt there are also passwords registrations and authorisations to further fuck with your head. Ive had enough of all this crap from line 6 products like the UX2 and variax guitar. An instrument is to be plugged in and played. End of. And in this respect IT is spoiling music.Finally, you cant actually beat real strings, piano, sax etc..we do all know this dont we. Great video though and total respect for a sublime musician.

  • @RME76048
    @RME76048 Před 7 lety +1

    Huh. I was underwhelmed by the sounds demo'd. Advertising below the video shows that the wireless pickup is $400 and the floor controller is $200. At $600, what makes this better than a GR-55? Wireless isn't selling me on that, two voices isn't selling me, the kinda-cheap-sounding sounds aren't selling me, and apparently not having anything like guitar and amp models, not having many many hundreds of sounds, etc. isn't selling me either.

    • @CreamFreshCream
      @CreamFreshCream Před 7 lety +1

      You definitely have all those things. And the sounds are way better on this than on a GR-55, especially violins and pianos... It is much better...

    • @ericpaulos1695
      @ericpaulos1695 Před 6 lety +1

      With a GR-55, it really is meant to be a self-contained system. The GK-3 pickup works great with the Roland unit, but not on virtual instrument libraries. Believe me, I really tried to make the GR-55 work on virtual instrument libraries, but I kept triggering false notes (like two octaves away), and just could not control virtual instruments. That all changed when I installed the Fishman Triple Play pickup. It lives up to the advertisements, tracks incredibly well, and I was happy to sell my GR-55 and get the FTP. But if you like the GR-55 sounds and are content to keep them, then the Roland is fine. I decided it better to trade off the GR-55 internal sounds for the extra control that is possible with the Fishman.

    • @AustinTexas6thStreet
      @AustinTexas6thStreet Před 6 lety

      Oh, the GR-55 does NOT even compare!!! It costs TWICE as much and is lucky to be HALF as good!! I also considered a Boss SY-300...great unit but not nearly as versatile. It requires NO special pickup or anything extra at all, which is realy cool

    • @ScottHogue
      @ScottHogue Před 6 lety

      I'd love to agree with you, but then we would both be wrong. ;) Now, Jennifer Batten is a bad ass, at least we can agree on that one. But the GR-55 is more versatile. Roland has always had some great synth sounds, and it also has modeling starting at the guitar level. You can use the mag pickups, but if you use the software tones, you can take advantage of a ton of alt tunings without touching anything. Finally, while the wireless is nice, you still have to bring out an amp AND a laptop or tablet to play live. Or, you can bring one box, plug into it, then direct into the PA and it's on.

Shortcomings an all. let's have a real look at what this excellent midi-interface can do in a recording situation. then mbe tripleplay will fess up to the considerable fall-shorts on thisotherwise incredible product, address the problem, fix it and lead the market. or not.... Fullfils the promise when in freestanding plugin mode: if only i could get it to function with all aspects active and control-accessible while recording in a DAW.
