  • DIY video on refinishing an exterior wood door that has had some wear. I'm no expert. Just hope to share what I've done to help others who may want to try it.

    Thank you for this video. Our front door is similar to yours and was very weather worn. I followed your instructions to a T and our door now looks brand new - i even used the same color stain. I sanded and painted by hand... If a young stay at home mom can do this, anyone can! Thanks again and take care.

    You have one of the best setups and preparation advice that I've seen. You're very thorough, love the shim and the brush tip. Surprised you didn't protect the glass with paper so it didn't get drips. Would have liked some info on sanding molding and why you chose to brush and not use same product in spray can. My solid oak door is beat up from 20 years of 100 degree sun exposure. I'm probably going to need bondo in some areas of the moulding. Keep up the great work.

    Nice video. Thanks. Any tips regarding sanding the molding that was around your door? Video didn't seem to cover that.

      How long did you have to wait between the coats of spar urethane? I hear you have to wait several hours for the oil based products to dry before sanding and applying new coat.

    How do you sand the molding and uneven wood trim? Sanding Sponge? I have a bit more weather wear and it really needs sanding.

      Hi Pamela, You can use a sanding sponge. However, depening on the shape of your molding, you may wish to just fold the sand paper a few times and use that by itself. I find having a sharper edge on the fold does a great job getting into the ridges much better. Also, take the time to use the proper grit. Don't skip them. You may need to start with 120 if the damage is bad, then step down to 180, then 220.

    This looks great. How long did the entire process take?

      it took me all day. I started around 8am and put it back up that evening around 9pm if my memory serves me correctly. I was nervous that the spar was going to be tacky but I needed to put my door back up. in the morning it was fine. no sticking.

      @@homemadechow3532 Great video, thanks for sharing. How much dry time did you give it in between the 4 coats of urethane? And roughly what was the ambient temperature?

    • @homemadechow3532
      @homemadechow3532  Před rokem +1

      @@ashleychan8625 The dry time was about 2 hours between coats. The key is not to put it on too thick. More thin layers is better than less thick layers. The temp outside was about 75 to 80 degrees. It gets really hot here in FL during the summer and leaving the door off that long would cause the entire house to be way to hot.

    yes it's great to take the door off , but the steps and products you used took a lot of time , that door was down for two days I'm guessing ......

      Actually one full day. Started very early and ended vary late. I was nervous about it sticking but it really didn't. By day two it was all good.

    any chance of doing it w/o taking door off?

    • @homemadechow3532
      @homemadechow3532  Před 2 lety +1

      I'd imagine there could be but it would have to take much longer. Also, it would be tough getting close to the hinges.

      You always want to remove door for leverage and even application of coatings.
