    Two things to clear up:
Alastair didn't say Thomas was a product of incest. He said that Thomas' father, Gideon, had an affair with Charlotte, Matthew's mother and that Matthew, Thomas and Thomas' sisters were a product of that affair.
Cassandra Clare always planned on writing this series. I don't know if the family tree was always intentionally misleading or if her plans changed along the way, but she's been saying the family tree is inaccurate for years now.

I read this only because I enjoyed TID. I was hoping for a strong character dynamic like Jem/Will/Tessa, but I don't feel like I got that in this one. I was also hoping that the book would focus more on the boy group as main characters which I thought would be a different relationship for a Shadowhunters book, but that wasn't the case. Cassandra Clare is capable of creating flawed, interesting characters, (Alistair, Matthew, Anna) but she hardly ever makes them the main characters, which is a missed opportunity for me.

White Rabbit Mix oh my goodness i felt the same thing! Like, all of these characters did not make me feel attached to them like it did with TID. Some of them were funny and interesting but felt flat at the same time?
I would love love to know what’s your fav books of all time because giiirl, your taste 👍🏻🔥

Honestly I think it’s because there were way too many characters. TID was strong because it really just focused on the three but this one tried to focus on everyone.

Exactly! Cordelia and James (and her other main characters... perhaps not Julian because he was no hero most of the time) are her typical heroes that are just good and better than everyone else. And that's kind of... meh. I really hope TLH can bring something else to the Shadowhunter World but with Chain of Gold, CC didn't take any risks. However, the story may become more complex as CC said that we will know why Cortana will cause Cordelia sorrow.

j she’s apparently also said she’s going to have a love triangle “that she’s never done before” and she’s done a lot of them so I’m intrigued about what spin she’s going with there

@@ThoughtsOnTomes I know!! It doesn't even seem like a love triangle because Cordelia is in love with James and she did say she didn't react to Matthew the same way she did to James but I truly want to see if Cordelia will develop feelings for Matthew. I would like to see it tbh.

I like your review! I have read all the Shadowhunter books, and I agree the villain in The Infernal Devices is the flimsiest ones in all the series. But some of the series intertwine, like the Mortal Instruments and Dark Artifices need to be read together and now it appears like The Last Hours will be tied into the final series in 2024 The Wicked Powers.
Also, the first books in her series are usually the setup. I think the plot and everything will kick up in the second book.
And you don't have to read the short stories, you'll find out what's in them, but usually a book or two after them. I think Chain of Iron will be more of Matthew's book, but I'll refrain from saying why because of spoilers.
I'm glad someone else liked Cordelia as much as I did!

I know you said you're not for the short stories, but this one's not connected to anything important. It's just a really sweet story for Jem/Tessa fans. It's called "After the Bridge" on Cassandra Clare's tumblr

It's a very good decision you've made to not read her other series. One thing you start to notice about Clare is that she writes the same stories with the same themes and characters over and over again, just shuffling the names, settings and appearances around. And nothing ever ends! Even when one series "ends" there are so many unanswered questions because she's saving it for the next series and then it continues like that forever so you never feel satisfied?? That's how I feel anyhow, which is why I won't be picking this up. I just don't see the point. And based on what I've heard it feels like I've read it already lol.

This was definitely my favorite first CC book. Usually her series get better as they continue (with the notable exception of TDA) so I'm really excited about this one! I agree that "herondales only love once" thing was bad vibes. Though I do think that we're supposed to think that and someone is gonna yell at James for that bad mindset. I sense a strong Alastair character coming as well. He's gotta put the work in tho.
I also agree that Jem being around all the time when James and Lucie were growing up didn't completely match, but I'm not gonna complain about more Jem. I think the epilogue implied they a lot less of each other after Will dies because Tessa leaves London.
    Great review!

LOL I understand not wanting to read The Mortal Instruments - I love the characters but couldn't care less about the plot. But The Dark Artifices is SO FUCKING GOOD. Truly one of the best things Clare has written. I loved Chain of Gold though, I'm like 80 pages into Chain of Iron and feel like I'm not gonna sleep tonight: the drama is too rich.

What I really didn’t like is that James and Cordelia do not really get to be together at the end. I’ve read all of CC‘s books and I feel like she writes all of her series after the same recipe and it’s just getting really old. I don’t know if I will even continue this series even though I was such a big fan of TID and TMI!
