Volkswagen e-Golf 2020 review - is this now the best value electric car?

- The world-famous VW Golf has gone electric! It’s almost identical to the regular Mk7 Golf, and it’s brought the same interior fittings and features… But it’s only got a range of less than 150 miles! With such low mileage compared to the competition, does the e-Golf have what it takes to go head-to-head with more established family EVs? Join Mat for his latest in-depth review to find out!

It's nice that VW made it look like a normal car and not a futuristic techy showy look. It makes it more comfortable and familiar which will make people want to buy an EV car more I believe.

How mutch?
Dear Mat, many times you refer to the "instant torque" of electric cars, but that is actually "instant horsepower", or more precisely "instant peak horsepower". Tesla model S for example, has peak bhp ready to be instantly used, in the speed range of 40-100mph. check its dyno plot. In addition, the torque figures of electric cars sound impressive, but you have to remember that the car has only one gear, and it is a very long one. It is something like 4th gear in a petrol car.
another thing- on your drag videos, you always use launch control, but this is far from the everyday use of the car. imagine you are being surprised off the line. that will actually be the same logic like in your "50mph surprise kickdown" race. it can be very interesting to see a race without launch controls, lets see how quickly those big turbos spool up
😂 😂 😂
At 7:55 - every time Mat mentions a VW DSG 'automatic', he always says they are "clunky... and jerky when pulling away". But I have driven numerous DSG VW's, 6-speed and 7-speed, old and new (and the identical Audi S-tronics) and have never experienced this effect. Strange.

I’ve had one of these for 48hrs and it’s a fantastic car, really sporty to drive even with the eco tyres, only criticism is the wind noise that appears at 70 under 70 is fine it’s either on or off. I’d much rather VW invested the id3 money into a new version of this, the id3 isn’t great looking and the interior quality is shocking!
@@veemacks7255 that is false
Exactly. I hate the trunk on the Id.3, ruins the whole exterior and the interior is awful in general

The Golf is one of the most sold cars in the world, like literally the second or third most sold car ever made.
@@jpch8814 the Golf hasn't sold as much as the Toyota Corolla, which is the world's best selling car on every continent in every country. Golf is just Europe only mostly!
@@jpch8814 golf is popular only in Germany and only if we are living in the year 2010.. oh wait, it is 2019 now! so nobody actually cares about golf now. Model 3 please :)

For sure!!!!!
Huzaifa Vawda hahahahahahha.... great comparison!
Why?
Is Tom Holland a car?
@chipchip are you stupid ?
The Golf is truly an amazing car. I didn't think this car could get better, but it's improved in the past few years. And the electric version? Volkswagen blew it out of the water on this car.
30k for 140 miles range, good luck with that 😂
Yeah that was my thought too. There is nothing appealing about this car at all, IMO.
That’s about the same range I get from my BMW i3 94ah. The i3 is probably a more fun car but the e golf is much more practical and cheaper. If you don’t do many long distance trips and you can get one for cheap (especially when dealers will be wanting to get rid of them when the ID becomes available) it might still be a reasonable proposition.
That pathetic range is makes it a non starter and not even worth consideration.
Go check the value of GBP.
The I.D. 3 will have a 342 miles (550 km) range. If you need a lot of range, just get the diesel version and you'll get like 600 miles of range
Can you do a drag race with: golf-e, golf 7.5, golf 7, golf 7 GTI, and a golf R
And what exactly is the point of that?

@@darinharvey4360 haven't seen Carwow's races mate?
I just picked up a 2020 e-Golf today as my first car! Love it!
Had it for a year now and noted a couple of useful tips.
First, lease it. The car's value drops as fast as you can imagine. Bought it for 45 000 $ CAN last year, it's now worth 30 000 $ CAN on the market and any dealer won't give you more than 25 000 $ CAN for the very same car, 20 000km later. And that's when it still looks brand new.
If you buy it long term, make sure you love (and I mean LOVE) the car. Because you'll be stuck with it.
Don't keep those eco-whatever tires. They freakin' suck and make the car go all over the place. I strongly suggest to take that 2km hit on the car's range (that's what it's been for me) and get proper tires.
Don't drive on break mode (B) on the back roads or on the highway. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator, break mode is like throwing the anchor. Your brake lights will activate and you'll cause some funny reactions from the drive behind you. Plus, it'll take more energy to drive on B mode because you'll have to hit the gas to get back to speed. I default to D1 (first state of regen) as soon as I leave town.
Other than that, it really is a reliable, fun, nimble car. Perfect around town, drives like a charm on the country back roads. For a second car that's in the driveway for grocery and get the kids to school, it's close from perfection.
Could you tell me what range you get from a full battery? Thanks
Since its about to become obsolete, the E-Golf could become a very good and cheap used electric car for those who just travel around town. I wouldn't buy one myself yet, but it's certainly worth considering maybe two or three years after the ID3 is released.
Hey...we now have 2 or 3 years later and those Golfs are not 'the' option on the German market :-)
@@tobiass6556 Hmm, why is that?

Car Wow ALWAYS does this, and it is SOOOO annoying! Basically giving advanced model years in the title to cars that are already out or have been out for ages, trying to give the impression they have some exclusive scoop on an upcoming car, whereas in fact - it's just clickbait. The reg on this car says it is actually a 2018 car - but hey, don't let little facts like that get in the way of a good fake title to get people to click it! Yep, calling a 2018 car a 2020...... and everyone is supposed to lap it up! >:(
2020 Golf, on a '18 plate !?
@@thomasfowler196 They do it ALL the time - but this is good even for them (as the car is actually obsolete for 2020!).

Wait how's it a 2020 model when it's an 18 plate?
It's not a 2020 model. Well, it WILL be sold in this form in 2020, too - but it has been on the market like this (Golf 7.5 facelift) for over a year.
2020 electric golf will be ID3 car no more electric golf
@@Sto79Be That's what I meant. There won't be a Mk8 version of the e-Golf, so they will still sell this version in 2020. Same as, while the Mk8 is already revealed, there will not be a GTI or R version of it for a while, so they still sell the 7 GTI and 7 R.
@@freibier They won't be making both the mk7 and mk8 at the same time. The mk7 Gti and R production will end along with the rest of the mk7 range.
Appanrently it is "a thing" to call a car the "2020 toyboaty mcvancar" despite the fact that its only 2019 or even 2018..... I don't know why either but there we go. The car industry have fucked it.
Why would it be better if the charging port was at the front? It's safer to reverse into a space than it is to reverse out of one, ports at the back are more helpful for this
Nice car except for the relatively low range and the fact that they put all the weight over the back wheels. It should have been between the axles like in other electric cars and the ID.3.
Greetings from Portugal! Love to seeu your videos...
Do you think the car (or most electric cars) will be worth anything after 10 years of usage and probably needing to replace the batteries? It is one of the scariest factors for me when thinking about buying an electric...

Trust me VW would never have a overstock of their best selling car. I see where you come from though, it looks a bit low effort
so the drastically falling range at high speeds is brilliant for safety 👍🔌
Wanted the id3 but didn’t want to wait 9 months so I picked up one of these. I really enjoyed the one I test drove. 25,000€ for a 2020 with 5000km which is better then the 38,000€ and waiting list. And yes I know there are 9000€ grants but I couldn’t wait that long. Especially since my daily drive is under. 50km
6:35 that should read 36 kWh.

Same exact car as the 2017 model sold as compliance EV in U.S. Still a fun car to drive around town and range is fully functional for most Americans. To compare this to a Tesla is unfair as they are meant for to different applications. BTW the description implies VW Golf just went electric when in the states it has been around since 2015.
Real world rating total battery 36kw - usable battery 33kw, motorway 70mph range 110 miles 3.2-3.5 per kWh , combined 130 miles city 3.9 to 4.2 miles per kwh 135-145 miles typical dependant on driving style you may get 3.9-4.5 miles per kwh see James and Kate review for more

The e-Golf is an outgoing model. It's better to wait for the I.D. 3 with a 77 kWh net battery capacity and a range of 342 miles (550 km)
Better get an Kia E-Soul or Model 3.
The ID3 isnt proven yet- the other ones are.

I’m looking for something hybrid or electric for a commute car. I’m seriously considering this because of the price point. My main concern is range. I have about a 120 mile round trip. Then if I want to drive it to lunch or wherever at work. Does anyone have any experience using this in that capacity and how does it do. My average speed would be about 75 and Matt said it pretty much cuts the range in half which is a concern. Also, could I charge this at home in my garage?

Love your videos, but can you also mention the metric equivalent please for every number?
The fact you have to have a empty boot to get the charge cable would do my head in
Why they don't make electric car with a sun roof that double as a solar panel to charge the battery.
Nissan leaf has this option as extra with small solar panel on back spoiler
It doesn’t really work out from what I understand. Solar panels are really heavy which means the car consumes more fuel, and the surface area on the top of the car isn’t large enough to generate a significant amount of electricity
1. Too heavy
2. Too expensive
3. Too little usage / effectiveness
The existing technology is not efficient enough for that. We're talking about maybe an extra 5-10km in range for a whole day in the sun.
Review of the e-bike please!
Yes
Hey! Where is the avoid, consider, shortlist and buy ranking??
When you lift off to recuperate energy, do the brake lights illuminate as you slow down?
Depending on how much regen you ask for it will do, so most of the time yes
7:06 Yep, Mat's mad
This is our second car (our first is a Tesla Model S). And we've had a pretty good deal for it, back in 2017: €16k below sticker price (yes, you read that well: 6k from VW, 6k from govt, another 4k from scrapping an old Diesel which wasn't even worth the 4k).
And the reviewed car is not the latest iteration: the front bumper has changed a little, plus there is ambient lighting in the interior.
If you are interested in one, a word of warning: if you do intend to travel reasonably long distances in it, get one with the optional heat pump. We don't have one and in this configuration the car is really, really sensitive to weather conditions: it hates cold weather.
As to the consumption, I'll speak metric here: doing our normal driving cycles, it achieves around 12 kWh/100 km in summer but 16 kWh/100 km in winter. All in all, it means it can drive 200 km in any conditions, which is what we were after... Any longer than that and Tesla it is.
Francis Galiegue you cant deduce the 4k for the diesel
@@dae4162 This is France here, and yes, back in 2017 you could. You bet we jumped on the opportunity... FWIW it was an early 200x Fiat Punto 1.3 JTD. Good riddance!
Edit: since then it has been reduced to €2.5k
So, how does it compare to the model 3?

What about the idea of exchangeable batteries ? If there are fully charged batteries available at gas stations i mean a universal sized battery like a gallon size and all alike for all small cars hows that idea ?
Are you sure the battery is under the boot? Given that other mk7 e-golfs have a battery pack that fills the void of the transmission tunnel and beneath the seats. In fact there’s naff all under the boot and the space lost is more likely due to the strengthened floor pan.

Tesla offers no battery capacity warranty whatsoever. They say they'll replace workmanship defects with like capacity. So you will have NO WORSE THAN a 70% degraded battery at the 8 year point, because 70% capacity is considered a fully dead Li-Ion battery. The fail curve is exponential.

I think you should take many other parameters into consideration when reviewing ev’s.
What is the charging network like for the given vehicle, is the battery heated and cooled, the plug on the front of evs typically get snow in them or freeze during winter time, can the ev in question fit a toe hook, what is the expected battery degredation over time, etc.
You must be from US. All EVs sold in Europe are of same plug type and can be charged in any station. Thanks to our everybody's hated EU setting rules. Brexit happened, but EU rules still affect e plugs in Britain lolz. And while your other comments are very valid it doesn't really matter that much on UKs roads where it's neither too hot nor too cold - I guess the reason why it was not mentioned.
@@sk-sm9sh Well, aside from Tesla. They use the same plug, but use a software lock that prevents other cars from using Superchargers.
Why is nobody testing these electric cars how they handle with 4 persons inside and/or full boot, like when you travel with the family, +300kg battery, and see the efficiency as well.
Thanks for the video.
I've had an e-Golf since 2015 and it is good and bad.
The 'good' is that it drives well and is well built.
The 'bad' is that it is unreliable and VERY expensive to run and maintain.
Mine has only done 47,000 miles and been 'serviced' by a VW main dealer until October 2021 so the software has always been updated.
The range has dropped from c.100 miles to c.75 miles. It goes through tyres every 15,000 miles because it is heavy and tyre pressures are 40+ psi.
The charging cable packed up within two years - new ones are c.£100 and it's been through three since new. No apparent reason why they stop working - they just do.
The charging port is unreliable, not releasing the charging plug on several occasions - resulting in three AA recoveries and two dealer visits.
The ABS sensor and rear wheel bearings needed replacing in October 2021 at a cost of over £600.
Last week, the in-built AC charger blew up and I'm awaiting a cost but the VW part alone is £1,100!
The problem with electric cars is that very few people know how to service or repair them - including the main dealers - and when they do need repairing, the cost is astronomical. I'm waiting for the ECU to go - that costs a cool £2,750 for the part alone!
Needless to say the car is being sold and I'll buy a petrol engined Golf to replace it.
Appreciate the feedback. Tesla took 10+ years to get where they are now. Safe to say VW needs to put in the work to make their EV more reliable and cost effective.
Who else love Matt.
