My dad was ready to retire when he turned 50 yet my great uncle didn’t retire until he was 95. He had the option to retire when he was 65 but just didn’t want to. My Dad is 77 and still has a photography career that started in high school. I assist him on jobs by helping him set up the lights and background and he assists me on my jobs with his expertise at studio lighting. He loves doing photography and he still makes money doing it, he would be so depressed if he was forced into retirement, work keeps him young. It's great because he only has about one job a week but photographers get paid well, so he doesn't need to do more than one or two jobs max a week.

    My parents are in their 70s - well, except my Dad to be soon 80. They consider themselves baby-boomers.
    They had 3 kids in the US.
    My Mom was hoping I could care for her and I was happy if only her. My other sibling is my Dad's favorite so it makes more sense she be responsible for caring for him. Their relationship makes more sense and a lot less strain. Our eldest sibling isn't a good fit for caring for them.
    They have a home and have saved well, their companies they retired from provide amazing health and financial security.......
    But I worry more so for our generation and younger, considering the demands to reform our habits towards Green options in light of global warming combined with fewer jobs due to the 4th industrialization.
    My hope is for more socially/financially sophisticated setups with the concept of where I last managed as a springboard. The good part of the set up was matching caregivers to support primarily elderly and (marginally) temporarily handicapped individuals. Before that job I also worked at an adult daycare center. At first I thought the later was catered to the elderly but that wasn't necessarily the case, but I digress.
    So, at the at-home caregiver practice caregivers were deployed to lovely homes bc the sort that could afford this service were rich. Most folk can't afford this and no one wants to be sent to a convalescent home. But why not plan Early to design a retirement haven more in line with beautiful settings, tech relevant, compact (no sprawl/build vertically), walkable and not too far from city life centers. If only we could invest early on to better prepare for the transition - I'm already concerned about this and I'm not even 40 yet.
    When I think of the future I'm just glad driverless cars exist and are improving swiftly. But less driving demanding/dependant designed cities are best. Rise in high-varieties urban ag, helps. More programs countering the carbonfootprint of flights/transport/manufacturing of goods would also alleviate stress on our conscientious consciences and the balance of preserving life on our only livable planet.
    These are the few thoughts I bare in mind when considering the retiring baby-boomers, I think of them and the generations that will follow.

      I don't know your story but I just find it sad you want to split up your parents as they age. idk maybe they are already divorced. I would be devastated to not spend the last of my time with the man I married, had kids and lived so many years with.

    • @Poemi10304
      @Poemi10304 Před 5 lety +1

      Rinibottlecaps Not all elderly couples’ situations are good. Maybe at least one partner has an issue like severe dementia or some other kind of debilitating disease, so that they aren’t able to support each other adequately. Maybe the situation is so severe that even the children are unable to care for both together. If the family can’t handle it, it’s better to separate. In one situation I came across, the husband was frail and blind, and the wife had such bad dementia, she thought she was 5 years old and didn’t remember any of her family members. The wife required care all day and all night. It was difficult enough to get adequate care for her, let alone keeping her and her husband together. He made peace with it. He was a pretty happy guy. Seemed he had a caring, attentive family nearby with the means to care for him well. But that’s not always the case. He was (is?) a lucky man.

      *Even if perfectly healthy, better to be split up with family, and see each other often vs rotting together in the same retirement room. There are studies showing that older Americans are living together less often, but that they're relationships last longer. living separate might strengthen their bond*
