Bermuda dead patches

- We're in the middle of the growing bermuda season and if you have bermuda dead patches or dead bermuda grass, I will show you what I do to eliminate those unslightly areas. This is the same concept as bermuda lawn spot repair but on a much large scale.
What's getting me on my thin spots I'm finding out is when the home builders planted the Bermuda they barely cleared away any rocks or construction debris. Throw in the fact its clay soil and we now understand why we have so many weak bare spots on the lawn. Frustrating because it wasn't really apparent for two years.
It usually won't be apparent right away. When the sod is installed initially, it's constantly watered. Once you hit the first major dry spell, this is when the spots will show themselves.
i have same issue, what did you do?
You don't have much options. Best to dig the debris out and backfill with sand compost mixture. Alternatively, you can just top dress the spot and increase irrigation but that is a short term fix.
Watching in 2024. It's amazing how far your lawn and landscaping have come along since 2020 when this was filmed.
Good work detective Rob. I am looking forward to the results. The potting soil was a good suggestion too. 💪
Great video with excellent info, thanks.
🌞Great video, look forward to seeing the recovery.🌞
I have some brown spots in my lawn which i suspect was damaged by sledgehammer treatment. The nutsedge is definitely dead, but I think the grass took a beating too. Hopefully it’ll bounce back.
If its in full sun, the bermuda will come back.
Very helpful, thank you
😉 Thanks for sharing this, it really helped me out 👍
What fertilizer would you recommend?
I use to use scotts but now I use PGF complete
What about dead spots that have perfect right angles? I have a section of my back yard that's as if something has been sitting on top of the grass and it's perfectly squared. Exactly half of my lawn looks like this.
Check for reflections from windows or look at where water flows when it rains.
Does anyone know if I am switching from Tifway 2 Hybrid Bermuda (only a year old) to TifTuf Bermuda do I need to kill all of the roots of the Tifway when I remove the grass with a sod cutter or will removing the grass with a sod cutter 2inches down do the trick and I am safe to just place the TifTuf on top after I place some new soil after removal?
Hi, did this work? I couldn't find an update video. Wondering if the grass filled in and if the potting soil held up or did they end up with low spots over time? Thank you
Filled in completely. The under lying issue was water coming from the downspouts and settling on the grass. We redirected the water flow and the bermuda quickly filled in. I will ask the owner if I can take a quick video or picture of it.
@@TheALG Awesome and thank you again for all your videos!
Hello hello where did you redirect the downspout to
We directed towards the driveway and the flow goes towards the street
@The Average Lawn Guy is potting soil a must ,or can i just use a tiller and throw fertilizer?
You can just till and fert if your soil is not hard. The potting soil is obviously softer but more importantly, it has a small amount of nutrients which will help aid in filling in.
ty so much for response!@@TheALG
Would it or helped to plant some plugs in?
Definitely, it will fill in much faster
Should you water the area after fertilizing?
Yes
Good investigation! Where in Georgia do you live?
Hi William, I'm in north GA, gwinnett county Bethlehem.
@@TheALG I'm in Gwinnett County as well, Sugar Hill area.
Will be following from Braselton ga
I accidentally put ortho ground clear on spots on my Bermuda lawn. What should I do in those areas to bring the grass back?
The ground clear have an extended control that will prevent all growth. You are going to have a very hard time getting those spots to grow. You can try to water those spots heavily to push the chemical down or dig up those spots and replace with sand/soild. I would personally dig up those spots.
@@TheALG thank you for your reply. I’m probably going to dig up the bad turf and lay new turf.
If the spots are small and not taking up a big area, you can just remove those spots amd fill with sand. The bermuda will fill in fast, no need to add sod.
@@TheALG yeah I have a couple spots that are decent size. 🤦♂️ I messed up. 😂
What about if it’s in the middle of summer
Debris under the turf, drought, compacted soil, chemical burn, etc. There are so many possible causes.
You can remove plugs from healthy turf and put in the dead patches
What fertilizer did you end up using?
I think it was lesco fertilizer, it was provided from the owner.
I would almost bet this was due to the roof.. Was it new? I only guess that because they have a lot of Zinc in the roof grains now to off set fungus/mold growth. I have seen lawns killed by the drains before. Also.. (here in the south) The rain in the summer can become really hot as it comes off the roof... it can cook the grass too.
What kind of soil meter are you using?
I dont have it near me now but any soil meter that measures moisture will work to determine if your soil is over saturated or not.
I need help!!!! I think grass is dead please help
Describe your problem, do you have bermuda?
Yes, I have Bermuda and it looks dead applied pre-emergent in early May it still looks dead. Do you have Instagram to show you a picture
What brand and seed did you use?
I didn't use any seed, just sand and potting soil
@@TheALG What does the sand do?
Helps the bermuda fill in faster. It absorbs heat and allows the bermuda underground runners punch through. All I needed to do after is lightly fertilize and water.
@@TheALG What kind of sand did you use?
For small jobs, I use playsand/potting soil mixture. Large jobs, I use usgs sand golf courses use.
Did it ever come back?
It started to green up right before it got cold. I am going to swing by there to see how its looking now. I was told by the owner he's seeing some green.
