- DRAIN CLEANING VIDEO- Septic tank pump jammed - Drain Pros Ep. 57
In this video we hydro scrub from a plugged sewer line out 140 feet to determine what system the septic system the sewer line was tying into. We discovered the septic was full again after being pumped several hours before. The pump in the second system had jammed with tampons and a tape ball that clogged the pumps impeller. After removing the blockage inside the pump, that tank started to empty and the sewer system was back working properly.

I've been a plumber for thirty five years sewer pumps are the worst my hats off to Carl for getting in the manhole
👍 if there’s one thing for sure gravity flow never fails but a pump will! Cheers to a fellow plumber Fred 🍻

Ahh looks like you're at a school. Finally got a job to use the walkies I see!
Yeah! Perfect opportunity to use them. Makes the job quick and easy with a lot less scrambling around 👍 can blame not having them for so long on my stubbornness🤦♂️!
I like the video's and stuff but there is one question on my mind. If a woman is pregnant and she goes swimming, does she become an human submarine?
Haha definitely a submarine 😂!
The septic discharge pump sits higher than 4 inches from the floor to avoid dragging in sediment or large items which sink down.
You've probably set up that customer for another pump blockage in the near future.
It was set back on the block at the bottom above the tank level..we didn’t add any pipe, just about an 1/8” with the stop on the coupling 👍
Nice to see you back with videos.
Thanks Random! Most of the commercial buildings have shut down around us so it hasn’t been as busy with the jetter. Hoping as the virus dies down business will pick back up for more videos 👍
That’s some awesome work ... Carl wonderful job
Bravo
Is the word “gloop” and Industry term?! LOL. 😂 👍
Haha might be the industry standard now 🤣!! Between that and smegma 👍
@@DrainPros "gloop" aka glob of poop! LOL!!
Also drain "shmoo"
Nice job.
Thanks Gurwinder! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment 👍
Atleast you guys have a crew of guys make the job so much easier
Yeah absolutely! It was a late Friday afternoon job for the children’s home so it’s always nice when there’s more hands on the job! Strength in numbers 👍
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Have a nice day.
Thanks Kurt 👍 Appreciate all the love you give the channel!
great video guys...stay safe out there
Thanks Lone Ranger 👍 Appreciate the support with the channel!
That stack was full of floating sewer fish when you checked it, I hope someone skimmed them off! Interesting job this one. Also liked the playing Cards on the floor in the break room...
Floating sewer fish 😂 haven’t heard that one before! 👍
Shoot I have watched all the videos. Time to wait for more
😂 Thanks Joe! Appreciate all the support you have given the channel 👍 I’ll do my best to keep them coming
woooooh you guys used a bucket this time to catch the sludge that comes back up while jetting. I ask myself every time I watch your awesome videos, why am I watching this? must because its someone helping out others.
😂! Definitely appreciate the support you throw my way 👍 The bucket was a blessing on this one to catch the sludge and minimize the mess
@@DrainPros its my pleasure. keep up the great content
The grinder pumps that I pull that are running but not pumping are usually bound up with underwear. ( I think people have accidents and just flush them) The pump can’t grind up the elastic band and it gets all twisted until the motor stops moving and just hums. Sometimes you can get lucky on three phase pumps. You can wire them to run backwards and free it up but most time it’s bound up so bad you just have to pull it.
👍 we see the underwear thing all the time as well.. even when there’s a garbage can in the stall, most of the time they flush them for embarrassment!
What is the states confined space policy? OSHA fines coming in 5,4,3,2,1. Just kidding, I know how it is, you gotta do what you gotta do. Be safe out there!
🤫 Bryan don’t say those letters to loud 😂! Typical we would have tried to do it from the top but with the school kids living there, didn’t want to leave them without a sewer for the weekend. Like you said “gotta do what you gotta do” 👍 Appreciate it 🍻
Get yourself some confined space ppe and keep it on hand. This is how guys die.
@@77Ariblood yeah, it only takes a few moments in a methane environment
Good seeing the walkie-talkies, I wish you had shined a light down the drain, but great job and I wish women and girls had more sense. C’mon ladies. 💚💚
😂 Thanks Pheurbel! Appreciate the support you give the channel 👍
They are throwing only tampons instead of pads, what do you expect more, lol...
Obviously the instructions on the tampon box lies when they say "They are flushable" then. 🙄🤦♀️
Interesting content .. such a long distance is also new for me.
Once I had 70 meters, but only for one house.
Yeah in our area we don’t have to many of them that are this long. When we do they are normally a high head grinder style pump so it chews up the debris and evacuates the tank at a much fast rate! 👍
How’s things been going for you guys? Getting ready to head over to your channel now!
@@DrainPros In terms of health, I'm fine ... I now have a few days off which is very practical. The big virus fear is no longer around here and we have spring.
🤗
These pumps are nice, I know them.
if you ever run into a set up like that in the future, the ends of the valve are threaded you can take them loose there and. ot have to cut and glue pipe
No PPE for confined space?
Which mr rooter do you y’all work for I work for mr rooter as well
funky water funky floor change da watter
Haha 😂 Funked up!
Looked like that pump's ball valve was also a coupling.
Thank a sewer system worker today. They’ve been dealing with your crap your entire life
Haha love it Brad! Appreciate it 👍
Drain Pros 🙂🙂
Interesting just subscribed I follow drain addict also😄
Lol I use the same walkies at my job.
This is America right
I hope they wil install a new pump meby a grinder type so that wont happen sgain
Yeah absolutely! We through the pump back in to get them out of an emergency but I recommended them invest in a new grinder pump to chew that debris up 👍
Dang. I use a spartan 300 machine. And the same style jetter
Love the Spartan but after 2-3 main drains during the day, it never gets lighter 👍😂
I bet these guys wouldn't have complications from C0vid, strong immune systems!
Not to criticize, I am just curious when your coworker was in that pump manhole was there any risk of dangerous gas in there? Or since it wasn’t too deep it wasn’t required?
Osha is calling
Tape ball = school
So the tank just really acts as a big trap and the water is pumped out to the city sewer?
Yeah on this one the first tank holds the solids while the anaerobic action takes place breaking the solids down and the second tank which is supposed to be primarily liquids gets pumped out! 👍
@@DrainPros why have tanks if they are on city sewer? That's what the sewer plant is for.
derrickdrew17 Good question Drew! The building were built before the city sewer was run into the area, they are below gravity grade of the city sewer that was installed so they have to pump the sewer back up to a level where gravity will carry the sewage! 👍
@@DrainPros thanks for the quick response, that's interesting to know. Learned something new.
why didn't they seperate the union at the valve. looks like the pump could be lifted up from there not needing to go manhole.
You need to check out Drain Addict's videos and consider something like his set up for your jetter. He has reals for everything. Dragging 100s of feet of hose around, in and out of houses must be a major pain in the ass. Great job trouble shooting the problem though👏🔥💯👍
Thanks Chaz! Yeah I like his setup it would work perfectly in some house setups over here in the states. 👍
@@DrainPros yup that's exactly what I was thinking. Your setup is more geared toward commercial applications, isn't it?
And I was wondering where are y'all based out of. Texas possibly?
@@chaz2785 he mentions in the video New York State so I'm going to guess that's where they're at.
@@alex-marquette aha! I knew it, based on accents, architecture, and his new York demeanor 🤣
That mop at the end blleeh
😂.. there going to need a new mop! 👍
We always to to pop it with the cable first then jet it trying not to make a mess but I see you guys aren't scared ha ha drain cleaning can be a rough job
Yeah most of the time we try with the cable first, this one we sent the cable line out 75 feet several times but weren’t touching it so we figured time to stop wasting time and jet it!
Was this a SUNY campus?
This one was at a children’s home 👍
Why would you cut the discharge line on the pump when the is a union at the vavle?
We cranked on the plastic union pretty good and it wasn’t budging even with a pipe wrench backer on it! It was easier to cut the 2” and throw a coupling on it then risk breaking the 2” pvc pipe leaving the pit. You know how it is a later Friday afternoon job with the supply houses closing up if it’s going to break that would be the time it does it 😂
try strap wrenches instead, using pipe wrench or pump pliers just distorts it making it bind up worse.
throttle bottle We actually tried a strap wrench with it too, might be able to see it on the ground next to the man hole. Just a pain in the butt plastic union!
missed the strap wrench in video, yeah that pvc and other plastics love to take a set, sometimes two people one holding a pair of strap wrenches tight and second person peck it with hammer, or you may be able to yank it hard, but that's mighty brave when you could take a poo shower lol...
Watch drain addict folks you will learn something
He does a great job with his videos! 👍
Haven't seen any new videos in a couple months
wondering why tanks so deep,,looked like cast iron could go out thru wall....rip everything out install new system for 250,000
Wasn't that a union end on that ball valve?
Yeah! All seized up, couldn’t get it with a big pipe or a rubber strap wrench, didn’t want to crank on it too hard and have it break leaving the pit! 👍
@@DrainPros Understood.
Why have a septic system if there's a city sewer? Is this basically a small lift station?
Yeah they have a city on the front side of the building that was added 40 years after it was built so they still have it tying in a septic lift station forcing it to the city sewer system in the back of the campus that was there when they built. There looking to reroute it around the side of the building and to the front sewer to get rid of the pump system and back to gravity 👍
Youll thank your septic system when the city backs up, and the tanks arent full, thats operating level, they fill up and drain out a pipe just below the inlet pipes height, tanks have to fill up with water to draib properly... When replacing the pump theres probably bricks or something the pump was originally sitting on to keep it off the ground...
why cut the pipe when there's a threaded union right there at the shutoff valve. that's why it's threaded there, to remove the pump without cutting pipe.
My sisters, quit flushing your tampons! Wipes, condoms and grease are big no-no's, too.
Just Imagine your walking and that thing was opened and you walked in there
To be continued
That is an insane length for that pump to be pushing. You'd think made a bigger pump or a secondary pit and pump to relay all that liquid.
Yeah David most of the time on a system like this we would see a grinder pump which has quite a bit more stainless steel teeth to chew up debris and with more of a 1 hp pump that puts out a lot more flow volume! They are thinking about rerouting the sewer line to the front city sewer and doing away with the pump all together 👍
That ball valve looked like it had a compression fitting with a collar. Couldn't that have been just unscrewed to disengage the pipe to bring the pump up?
100% this. no need to cut that pipe fellas
We used a pipe wrench and a strap wrench on the plastic union. It wasn’t budging and was putting to much torque on the pipe, it was a Friday afternoon and as plumber law that’s when all hell would have broken loose and the pvc would have broken leaving the man hole. Much easier for us at the time to cut the pipe and burn a $1.50 coupling than cause a nightmare!👍
@@DrainPros Some day someone will invent an impact pipe wrench to help us out
@@DrainPros Ahh ok, thanks so much for straightening that out! Strange a plastic coupling would put up such a fight! Guess you did what had to be done. Great vids too.
I don’t have
feel sorry for that pump not one lift station pump for it at all. i wonder if a y pipe would help that from getting stuff in it you know like a straight line to the pumps hole but i y in there so solids fall down and go back towards the septic to try and avoid the fake sewer rats
Hell of a long way for a pump that size! Not even a grinder pump 👎 pretty sure it was only 3/4 hp
Confined space entry violations.
Maybe i am hallucinating, but at 7:24 I'm pretty sure I seen an electrical arc in the pump wires
That's a reflection on the water,by the way I think the pump is submerged
That pipe doesn't go to the marshmallow room.
That's not terribly far to pump if the elevation change isn't too high
Definitely have seen longer runs but usually we see them on a larger pump or a grind pump. Only have a few of the high head pumps in our area where the elevations is 20-30’ higher than the pit. Every time I see a setup like this tho I’m just thinking how much pipe they put in the ground to make the drainage happen👍
1:11 Come on man... it's not an "affluent pump"... it's not a wealthy pump. It's an "effluent pump".
It was not hard to see who the boss is. He didn't go in the hole
