Do they send free combination squares to stir the paint?
I guess you mean HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) not High Pressure Low Volume. This may confuse the big box salesman when people show up trying to buy high pressure sprayers.

I don’t understand why other contractors are criticizing this man, he obviously doing a great job helping home owners to do their own projects, so if you are a hater who thinks you can do better why you don’t open your own CZcams channel and stop criticizing that is not professional
Most the "contractors" are just trolls that have no idea what theyre talking about
Here’s a tip: for the gravity gun you can get a cup that uses a “bladder” inside. Before spraying, to bleed the air out, you turn the gun upside down and spray until fluid starts spraying. This way you can spray upside down, sideways, any direction. They’re used a lot in the auto body painting business.

Paint the inside of the cabinets first then work your way out. This will stop you from messing up the wet paint on the face while reaching into the cabinet.
Greatly reduces overspray.
What size nozzle do you use?
@@hboy954 I don't use the pneumatic sprayers like this guy does or HVLP systems. I use airless for painting cabinets, even though there are better options but I still get great results. The tips I use are for graco airless sprayer. FFLP 310 tips.

@@drdilettante even then it doesn’t seem like enough. We were finishing up a hospital and they had me sound caulking where sheetrock met concrete for a few weeks. Even with Sellstrom KneePros and a kneeling pad my knees were sore af after 10 hours.

No joke. I redid my bathroom in the winter, and I didn't think about knee protection until the pain started. My knees still haven't recovered.
Perfect video for us. We are replacing all kitchen cabinet doors in a rental with those same MDF doors. Bought a cheap sprayer because I’ll be spraying them just like you. Probably just going to roll the face of the cabinets because there are tenants in the property. We made new counters out of MDF and topped them with epoxy. They turned out pretty good. Use red gard on the bottom and also painted the bottoms to make sure if anybody looked they wouldn’t be red. New sink & faucet, New range hood. Should be super clean and nice.

I have used that Husky HVLP- I ditch the included micro filters. They clog up and you have to empty the cup to clean it. Just use a paper paint filter while filling the cup. Done. That dewalt pancake compressor has a higher 165 psi cut off, and is decently quiet for a pancake. I recommend Hitachi’s The Tank pancake for even higher psi cutoff. Since they both have two taps each, you can daisy chain them to get higher CFMs. Just keep your psi set to what the sprayer needs (below 50 psi).

I just repainted my cabinets with the c2 + the hardener. I used a huskey hvlp gun with the 2.2mm tip and it sprayed fantastic, finish product is awesome. It was expensive but the finish came out so nice. I ended up doing basically the exact same thing as you before you posted this video.

What size compressor?
@@captaincane64 it's an older craftsman 12 gallon or so that I got from my dad. Using the black husky gun that comes with the air regulator I sprayed it at about 30-35 psi. Never had issues with running out of air

Does c2 paint come pretty thin? Every time I use an hvlp with water based paints I need to thin them down a lot!
Never realized spraying was so easy! I could totally do this with my little compressor! I think I’ve got a new idea for the birthday present list I never can think of anything for! :)
Most compressors you buy at home Depot don't have enough pressure for this type of painting. Not the size. Cause you can get a 20 gallon but not enough pressure and it won't spray right

@@ssa12654 Its not the size of the tank that matters. Its the cfm that the compressor puts out. The tool or gun being used on it cant be using more cfm (cubic ft per minute) than the compressor puts out. The tank pressure would be used up faster and the gun wont spray right, because in this case, you are using air more quicker than the compressor can supply. People just buy any size compressor and grab air tools and find out the hard way. Each tool will say how much cfm is required. The air compressor will say how much cfm it puts out. More cfm is better in the compressor. if you have a smaller tank you might be seeing it never shuts off because it never gets the chance to fill completely while running a tool.

always remember back at college.. the first years came in with some wooden tool racks the joinery department students had made. The P&D 1st years started filling the wood/gaps etc.
We were in the final 4th year of City&Guilds P&D and looked at the first years and said..... what are you filling those for with out knotting the knots and priming the wood first, haven't you learnt anything these last few months!!

Never used a spray-gun. Only rollers and brushes. Interesting to see how it’s work. And you don’t put paint everywhere else than the surface you need to paint. 👍
Loving the budget build and working with existing materials. I know im not the only one dealing with a 100+ year old house thats willy wonka'd itself over time and nothing new or square seems to fit lol.

I am liking your videos and I will be doing the tile over tile. For this one, I have been doing cabinets for 15 years. I am a 61 yr old female. : ) My preferred primer is Zinsser Red Label shellac based. You ALWAYS need to strain your paints/primer before putting it into the gun. Wear a respirator and goggles, dude. I do not spray inside boxes because the blow back is incredible. I roll the insides and spray the outer surfaces. Cabinet doors, I sand, then use the same Zinsser Red Label primer, then sand again. Then I use PPG Breakthrough! Get your doors up and off the surface by using a "lazy susan." (easy to make) and then you can spin those doors! I spray backs first, then fronts (1x or 2x). The edges are easy when the door is elevated. Just spin the door. Fronts: spray the edges, then give one continuous swipe across with the gun, starting the spray before reaching the door and ending it after passing the final edge. You will always have a weak spot on the door face (where the shaker panel is joined) so rotate the door 180 degrees and give one run across that join. Do not use short little sprays on doors. I love PPG Breakthrough because it is self-leveling and evens out so nicely. I wish I could try your product, C2. Is it available in the US?

Using a HVLP sprayer helps with overspray (blow back) problem. When you paint cabinet doors ideally you want to break the paint bridge between the frame and the panel insert so it can move (caused by humidity & temperature changes).
PPG breakthrough isn't very durable and can degrade by household cleaners. BM Adanced or BM Command are the two more durable non-lacquer paints available.
When you say Red Label, do you mean B-I-N?
@@guytech7310 And Ben Moore bought INSLX which makes Cabinet Coat - another good paint for cabinets.
@@maddierosemusic INSLX not so good compared to BM Advanced, BM Command, or BM-Lenmar. other brands would be Milesi & Renner. If it needs to be apply with a brush is sucks in my opinion.

I once lived in an apartment with tiled countertops. While it was convenient to be able to put hot items on the counter without melting it, that was outweighed by the aggravation of trying to keep all those grout lines clean. If it's not too late I'd recommend doing the countertop in a different material.
counter done in 24 x 30 tile. 2 grout lines with sealer in the grout means easy maintenance. Cheers!

@@yusefmessallam, I've heard they are difficult to keep clean because they absorb spills.
I do tons of cabinet repaints and I can’t express enough if you do them frequently pick up a turbine sprayer with a remote cup or flex liner setup. Doesn’t have to be anything crazy since you can thin paints with XIM. C2 is something I’m surprised to see you using! By far the best cabinet paints for high quality. Another great product to try is ppg breakthrough. Not as high quality of a finish but still extremely good and dries almost instantly
BM Command or BM advance is more durable than C2. I saw a video of a cabinet guy that sprayed a cabinet door with a bunch of paints including C2, BM command, BM advance, SW emerald, PPG breakthrough, INSL-X, etc. and BM command & Advance came up on top. BM advance does take a long time to dry about 8 hours dry to touch and 16 hours between coats.
@@guytech7310 I like command a lot as well. I can’t stand advance. It’s one of the most stressful paints I’ve dealt with for almost any usage. It takes forever to dry and I can’t remember but I thought the C2 with the hardener beat out advanced on a few videos. Could be wrong but I’ve since this comment actually changed it up a bit. I like breakthrough and command for a lot of things. Kitchen cabinets the only paint I’ll use is C2. However, not really a paint but envirolak seems to be better than every paint hands down. So typically I spray kitchen cabinets with envirolak or C2. Other cabinets, vanities and trim I will use breakthrough or command.

@@logicalblueberry I haven't used either. For cabinets & Doors I been using Benj. Moore Command & Lenmar UltraLaq. I wanted something durable & I could apply using a HVLP spray gun.
I love your videos, watched so many! I am getting ready to paint my kitchen so got many tips today. Could I use an airless sprayer for this job or do you find a HPLV sprayer better for this?
I bought a pressure pot from harbor freight last year and primed the inside of my barn with it. I'm still not very good at it but it will come in very handy on future projects and was a bargain. It's hard to mess up something that's air powered.

I learned a lot from you Jeff you are a good teacher, I wonder why you haven't yet invest with the airless sprayer like graco!, I paint my whole house with it, and I paint my cabinet and trims you should give it try.
I have great equipment for my personal use. in my videos I try to show the lower cost options for a 1 off so homeowners can have confidence to do it themselves.
Tell us more details about your spray setup. Like what size compressor did you use. Could make for an interesting future video.
I used a dewalt trim compressor. Granted it is not as fast as a dedicated paint spraying machine However it is incredibly affordable and does a nice job with a little patience. save the 2500.00 investment . Cheers!

I’d love it if you’d do a who,evidently about exactly how to paint spray. With every detail & gravity fed vs the other & electric sprayers. I’ve wanted one for years but air compressor situation scares me. Like how big of a compressor do u need + 20 other questions. I’d looove to hear your thoughts etc before I buy one. Especially cuz I’ll be wanting the best one for cheapest price. (In Canada they’re not as cheap as they are in USA. U lucky ducks). 😊

Question I have a small hobby compressor, can I use it to paint my cupboards by just replacing a bigger paint dispenser ? TIA
A small compressor will work, but you like have short spray time as you wait for the compressor to recharge the tank to get up to the pressure needed. (ie you spray for 30 seconds, than wait 30 seconds for the air tank to refill).
Zinnser alcohol base is the best tentation adhesion always tint same color as finish coat

Very informative, thanks! I am looking to repaint our kitchen cabinets. I think the previous owners A) didn't prime and B) applied conventional latex a roller. The finish has always had a rubbery, tacky feel to it and it's wearing away in spots that see a lot of action.

Is there anything different that I need to do with this if I am painting laminate MDF units instead of hardwood?
Good starting point to elevate our DIY skills from just brush/roller. Oil based primers are really effective, but impossible to clean up. Do you have any tips on how to clean the air gun and skin after use? (similarly to how you taught us to clean the paint brushes from some of your early videos) As of right now, only able to just drown everything in mineral spirits...
there are many levels to oil based cleaners. I would suggest up your game to varsol for effective cleaning and then change out rubber gaskets. either way a 2 gun system from husky at such a low price means you have the option to toss the gun and forget ab out the cleanup and enjoy all the money you saved. For skin, use disposable nitrile gloves and an old long sleeve shirt.
Nice, I have tried a couple different plug in electric sprayers (not cheap) and wasn't anywhere near as impressed as my old compressor and simple spray gun. The soft fine mist I set it to that came out made a mediocre sprayer get great results. Also you compressor you use, I think you mentioned before it was a DeWalt trim compressor, is it as quiet as it seems in the video?

the dewalt compressors are not bad, but they are nowhere near as quiet as the dedicated quiet compresors. They typically come down in the 70db range, where quiet compressors are more like 60's, and the cheapo pancake compressors (Which are so loud you have to turn them off to have a conversation in the same room while wearing hearing protection) come in in the mid 80's. they also are not much smaller or lighter than the new 60db quiet compressors on the market.
Honestly, my feel right now is that Dewalt is trailing the pack on air compressor tech. You don't really save any money, they are louder, and their trim compressors have quite low cfm as compared to the competitors. Makita, Senco, king industrial, and California Air Tools all have better performing rigs for about the same money or cheaper. (just be careful with makitas, they label basically their entire line as "quiet", but there's an easy 10dB variance between them. 70dB is not horrific, but it's nowhere near the 60 and under a true quiet compressor can achieve. )

How did you spray the toe kick portion of the cabinet with the gravity fed gun? Or did you use brush?
I’ve used this Zinzer product on furniture refinishing. It did not work. I sanded. Primed twice and still got bleed through in some spots. A better product is the primer by General finishes. It’s pricey but well worth it.
or you can use the zinnser shelac but it has high voc's.
If you read their label, they literally tell you exactly what product to use to spot prime tannin/sap bleed through, and it's their shellac based primer BIN. Reading failure, not product failure, Zinsser have very good labels honestly.
What air tank do you use?? I’m about to start some small painting projects and would like to get an air tank but not over spend on it. Not sure if at least needs to meet the minimum CFM specified by the gun spray. Thanks!!!

I’ve been contemplating buying the same spray-Gunn you’re using in this vid but I believe it states on the label to use at least a 30 gal tank. I have the Husky Quiet 20 gal. Will I have issues spraying small panels and small pieces in my shop with the 20 gal tank?
not at all. you just need to be more patient. i used a small trim compressor from dewalt. Cheers!
You can spray with just about any compressor. The tank size just determines how long you can spray before the compressor has to charge. A few minutes of wait time while the compressor recharges isn't a problem when spraying that type of product for kitchen cabinets and such. Fast drying, high gloss automotive painting requires a large compressor because you don't want any breaks when laying down a continuous wet surface from start to finish.

Hey there! What’s the difference between spraying the cabinets and manually painting them like you do in your other video? Do you have a personal preference?
Should I paint my stained cabinet interior when painting? They are a light picked stain. Painting light shade of blue.
Also, I have a compressor. Do I use it with a hvlp gun? Cup or gravity gun?
Looking for best DIY level to get a good job for the least money. I am not a pro.

Hey, whats your opinion on the molding on the cabinets? I put my cabinets in the basement during renovation and later found out they have over grown with molds . Just wondering regarding to safet.
A dilute bleach solution might work to kill the mold, but its possible it might damage the paint. You can try spray a small section to see if the paint is damaged by the weak bleach solution.

Jeff, you don't actually specifically mention what the first product is that you're spraying. I found out that it is Zinsser oil based stain blocking PRIMER...you actually refer to it as paint a couple times during the video and it was confusing at first. Your videos are a must for my handyman business. Thank you!

I just have a question. How do I know when the paint is dry on my door to be able to hang it back up without it sticking and pulling the paint off when the door is opened.
spray work dries incredibly fast. give it 1 hour and you will be fine. Cheers!
good morning Jeff! I've got a small 250psi 5.1scfm compressor. Given I have enough patience for regeneration, will it produce enough air to redo cabinets or would I be better off turning down the volume on my airless Graco? Cheers from Michigan.

Curious about water vapour from your compressor. Do you have a dryer or separator on the air line? No fisheyes in the paint?

I was taught, and always find it easiet to paint "inside out".
Do the inside uppers first. That way you aren't trying to avoid wet paint to get to those hard-to-reach places. Next do the sides, then bottom insides of the spaces, again to avoid messing up wet paint.
Finish with the front, top and outside planes.
After that dries well, flip and do the back side.
I find this helpful. Is this the method you want to use if painting cabinets that are still on the hinges (haven't been pulled off for painting)?

It's odd to see you recommend Bin Shellac on top of Odorless Oil Based, because Zinsser clearly recommends to spot prime with BIN and THEN to overall prime with either Bull's Eye 1-2-3 or Odorless, specifically because BIN Shellac will block the stuff oil base can't while also likely flashing through the top coat. I ignored this and...had flashing.
" Zinsser clearly recommends to spot prime with BIN" That Spot Priming only is for Exterior applications - you may fully prime with B-I-N inside - but not in a super damp area like a bathroom. It creates a vapor barrier and I've had issues in a steamy bathroom. But really, I would not use BIN in this application at all. Do know that 1-2-3 will flash on you - it is NOT a block out primer. Learned that the hard way!
nice video jeff...please keep making more of it. 2 quick questions. a) is this sprayer dust free? I see you are not using mask and not sure if it is dust free. I plan to get a sprayer and was looking at something which can be dust free (or very less dust). Please suggest any if it is not dust free. b) You said the canadian company which is making cabinet door and said there is a link in the description. I dont see the link. I see only the C2paint which has more of paint products. Can you please suggest the cabinet doors making company link please? Appreciate all you do to the communutiy and keep up the great work.
