Good to know I'm apparently a "total sweetheart of a man" Ted - that's my entire goal in life.
Definitely keep tabs on Fantasy Grounds in the coming months. My two priorities and areas of focus will be 1) ease-of-use and 2) establishing a polished visual identity for Fantasy Grounds. We're going to level up a lot in those areas. After one week on the job, we'll have a website refresh next week to kick that off a bit, but plenty more to come.
Def looking forward to UX enhancements and clearer documentation and better support for effects coding.
So how many Dinosaurs will appear in Fantasy Ground?
I own a Fantasy grounds, since classic and now the Unity version (separate licences by the way). Now with Unity the Mac/PC integration is completely transparent and effortless, I've had players with both at the same time (only GM'd from PC though), also no longer needs the use of a VPN. I'll give it that some people might have issues with it being an independent program, when compared to Browser based VTT's, but I also have to say that I've seen more problems with the use those browser based (people not seeing some graphics from the background or tokens, disproportionate UI on different screen resolutions, low bandwidth, etc), although I also will admit that the main liking I have to it is precisely the possibility of automating many interactions (rolls, saves, effects, etc) which require the use of "macros" or some command composition skills, but it lets you do things manually too. All in all, I really prefer it to other VTT's, but I'll admit the only fair comparison is with those that require to pay for them, paid VTT's should not be compared to those with free use, basically they're different categories.
DM which uses fantasy grounds (I am literally going over Tomb of Annhiliation in it as I am listening to this). I don't think people understand how good it is. Things like saving throws being done automatically, concentration checks automatic, just many many things that make combat go quicker and easier. Ted was probably using the old client which was not written under unity too, many things have been improved. For example, I'm going over the sound list for ToA in syrinscape, which now can be directly tied into fantasy grounds so I can trigger sounds or moods without alt tabbing. You have to learn the interface (more for the DM, I can teach a player what they need to know in something like 15 minutes or less) but once that's done it's really slick
100% agree
FGU is fantastic
Once FG swapped to unity, it is much improved.
I switched from Roll 20 to Fantasy Grounds and I can tell you that there is a learning curve. But, as a GM, I love the automation AND the ability to make my homebrew adventures with interactive links to maps, encounters, loot, etc. No flipping through notes as the built in campaign tool helps a GM organize all of that.
The official modules that are for sale do all of that organization for you. And now that an Ultimate Licence is $50 it is well worth a try.
Plus, they have gamer days where you can join a game to try it out. I believe they are one Saturday per month. Oh, and no, I am not a paid spokesperson for SmiteWorks. Just a player and GM that really enjoys Fantasy Grounds.
Last word - I tried Fantasy Grounds Classic a few years ago and thought it was nice but did not buy in. The updated platform Fantasy Grounds Unity is a vast improvement.
Thanks for this. Kinda gives me a second thought about that Pathfinder humble bundle since buying the VTT items is a bit much when I have licenses elsewhere.
I use Fantasy Grounds and for me it is by far the best VTT they are ahead of the pack when it comes to innovation. Also not having to subscribe but pay a one time fee is my preferred method. It's far cheaper than subscribing if you play for more than a few months.
Fantasy Grounds Unity is a system that requires a few hours to set up as a GM and as a player. But once it’s set up, it just goes.
It’s really good for systems that fiddles with sliding modifiers and doesn’t stick with a static value. The difference between playing Pathfinder vs something like Roll20 is night and day.
have you used foundry? how do you compare it to fg?
@@I..cast..fireball you can see its age, but they’re similar in function. Foundry has a lot more UI ease.
@@jams3076 thanks
05:12 the price is normalized to 50 dollars for an ultimate license, permanently, and even cheaper now at around $40 bucks now until 07-11-24. 2014 was before DnD5e and Fantasy Grounds was still rather primative then. The features vs the price is much more worth the value now.
Fantasy Grounds is 20 years old. Permanently changed their prices (lower).$20 standard $50 ultimate.Yes, there is a learning curve, but if you want to play you can just play. wanting to incorporate homebrew or house rules, yes you'll need to do some reading.
OG I would imagine is 20 years old... But I don't think FG:Unity is
MCDM also teased their new VTT on Patreon just yesterday which looks very cool!
All I remember about Fantasy Grounds is it being sold at my local gaming store, like, a bazillion years ago, and that without a demo, I didn't have the money to shell out for a computer program that I had no use for, as nobody had laptops back then. Or money.
You really need chapters for these videos so i can get around to the information i need.
Hopefully Adam will lead to Fantasy Ground UI finally leaving 1995.
My only experince with FG comes from me winning a license during last years Paizocon, yet the UI, Pf2e rule system require a purchase and finally been application based AKA can't run in cloud drove me away (Ultimate license been sorta required also contributed)
Roll20 been user friendly just don't use the Character Creator or try do anything that require API.
Now I can't speak for other system's than Marvel and PF2e but, it's worth noting that PF2e character creator way of handling feat (Alphabetic instead of eligible - not eligible) makes creating a PC easier on Pathbuilder.
Granted the current state is way better than Alpha 5.
I’d really like to see you talk about MAPS.
Here's hoping they can really nail the "at the table" feeling.
Unrelated to your video Ted, but how are you liking the final shape? Any plans at taking on Edge of Salvation? I know the algorithm doesnt like crossing the streams, but id love to see more Destiny content on the channel.
Dude the Final Shape killed it in my opinion. I tried the first encounter last night, and I'm loving it so far
I love Fantasy Grounds
They have some great DJs on Owlbear Radio
Demiplane being acquired is a bad thing. And that's based on one simple reason: consolidation is bad, partnership is good. If Demiplane was just partnering with Roll20 in a non-exclusive way, this would be great. But that does this buy out mean for integration with other platforms? What if I want to use Demiplane with Foundry, Fantasygrounds, or some other VTT? Is that a thing that will be allowed/possible in the future? I don't see how this can be anything but negative over all. I'm sure it's great for people that like Roll20, but for anyone else this is bad news. And it's not great for the industry as a whole.
100% agree
That was my thought as well. With Bradford going to FG and Roll20 buying Demiplane, does this mean we'll never see these games on FG now?

:o I keep seeing my fellow AAW fam in the wild recently
roll20 is making a new D&D 5e character sheet that you should be covering also
No better way to force progress than competition.
My group has been shopping around for a new VTT. We have been having a lot of complications with Roll20 that have been very frustrating. So this could be very interesting.
I stopped using R20 and switched to fantasy grounds because R20 is cloud based, and on high demand days (weekends) you’d see lag and slow service. FGU uses your own connection/computer and the “server” simply is a way for players to access their game. And if you don’t like that, you can run it as a LAN in person
@@kailae3269 Yeah that is pretty much the problem we are having lag, crashes, disconnects, etc. We play on Saturday nights. So I'm sure it's peak usage time.
Foundry is fantastic and it can essentially have any features/capabilities that you want it to.
Foundry is my favorite. I would have liked to have seen demiplane integration with Foundry just because I like the character builder on Demiplane but Foundry can stand on its own without it. It is by far the most versatile VTT out there. That said, I am not happy about this news with Demiplane and Roll20. Its very disappointing.
VTT Foundry is hands down the best.
Haven't watched in a long time. Loving the beard upgrade. Computer upgrade is probably ok too.
I just heard Wizards of the Coast are looking to hire an AI engineer. Let the speculations commence.
I use Roll20,.DndBeyond and Beyond20 plugin as a player and DM for 3-4 campaigns. This works OK -- I love what Roll20 does, but it's really flaky for my groups, so will be very curious to see where this goes.
Demiplanes...maybe someday, but I like the increaed integration to the VTTs, overall -- makes me hopeful for the future of TTRPGs.
Alchemy just partnered with Czepeku :P
Anything to kick Roll20 in the pants to imrpove.
Apparently Roll20 and Renegade had problems working together before, so hopefully the merger doesn't screw up a potential E20 Nexus...
All my firends and i only use fantasy grounds
FVTT remains my choice but glad to see some activity in the industry
I love ALL Nerd Immersion videos!
If you don't have FGU, buy now because they will change everything for better and then it will double the value ;)
My last experience with fantasy grounds was before the unity update. You're not wrong and you're comparison between foundry and FG however in my experience foundry is a hundred times easier to use even though they are both more advanced software
It’s more (Fantasy Grounds Unity - FGU) advanced now, but admittedly the UI doesn’t look like the cell phone style that’s popular these days. I have wondered if it looks that way as a callback to the old days of the hobby, as it has a old school feel to it
If you own a book on Demiplane will you also get it on Roll20?
I don't use any VTT so I wonder what sort of resources, computer wise, does it take to run one. If I caught this right Ted, you aren't familiar with Renegade Game Studios. For the fantasy side of things, they have two games which I think share the same world\system. One is Vampire the Masquerade and Werewolf the Apocalypse. Technically they probably fall closer to the horror side of things. Other game systems, which was not mention in the article, is the Essence 20 which is composed of GIJoe, Transformers, Power Rangers, and My Little Pony. Those four are currently being licensed from Hasbro and the Essence 20 system is very similar to the D20 DnD 5.0 system. Personally I'm hoping Demiplane has access to the Essence 20 games.
Some of my players use Roll20 on a phone.
Small maps work great on very old computers. Big multiple layer maps can be an issue.
I would love to know Fantasy ground
Go download the free demo. Watch some videos. Read the user manual, take a free intro class.
Where are the DC20 News?💜
Hope you're going to talk about dc20. Still waiting to hear what your thoughts are on the new system Kickstarter that's smashing all expectations right now
I'm skeptical Adam Bradford can make meaningful changes, but I'd love to be proven wrong. The Unity rewrite was a great time to update the UI to not look like a 20-year old program and they didn't.
Unity needed to be compatible with the (at the time 2,000) DLC available; so the UI couldn't change that much. The UI has had significant improvements in the last 2 or 3 years; but, of course, as with any UI discussion it all depends on what you consider a 'good' UI. I mean there are people who think that context sensitive menus via right click is archaic despite the fact that every (non game) piece of software has it.
I love skepticism like this - overcoming it makes me get out of bed in the morning. :D I've been on the job one week and we'll have a new website refresh by next week. We're not going to be wasting any time leveling up the experience.
@@BadEyecool, love me my FGU, keep the functionality but make it easier to use. Lareun at Fantasy Grounds Academy is nearly an unofficial manual and that’s probably not something you want to have as a permanent thing
If the end goal isn't going to be the ability to completely incorporate demiplane character sheets into your Roll20 game then what is the point. This could be big news for Pathfinder 2e newbies that don't want to learn Foundry. The PF2 sheet on Roll20 is awful.
I've used Fantasy Grounds before for a long time in a campaign I was a player in. I really dislike it and will not go back to it. So many things were automated it no longer felt like playing D&D to me. Adding homebrew was also tough back then.
I use Roll20 every week and them buying Demiplane is definitely weird. I like to use Roll20 and I'm very used to it. I'd prefer them to focus making Roll20 better instead of buying another platform that will remain a separate thing.
I've been adding homebrew to FG for almost 10 years. Really simple. Now changing the rules IS difficult. And as for the automation, if you don't want it, you don't have to use it. You can turn on manual die rolls and not use the combat tracker or any other automation, if that's what you want.
@@madmage2676 I'm glad you're enjoying using it, because the existence of VTTs allows so many people to even play D&D and other TTRPGs.
I spoke from a perspective of a player who had no control on which automations and addons were used. The default character sheet was really not for me, because it split the info into way too many pages for my liking.
Still using Maptool baby. You can keep your fancy microtransaction laden VTTs. All I need is a map with tokens.
fantasy grounds just costs too much to justify. 😅
The runtime client is free for players who just want to use it. And they just reduced their prices for licenses to $20 for Standard and just $50 for Ultimate.
It costs the same as Foundry for a one off license and the same as Roll20 for a subscription. And it's free if you are a player. So your assertion is false.
To be clear ultimate means you can join a game with just the free client as a player. Standard means you can host a game, but free players can’t join it.
@@kailae3269 Technically, ONE free player can join a Standard DM game. But only one.
@@SlinkyTWF did not know that have always had ultimate, thanks
Foundry VTT for life. Roll20 is barely a step above pen & paper.
