Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at ABBA with Angel Eyes, a PATREON request. ABBA gets a little experimental with sounds and entices the listener this time around with interesting lyrics and catchy "AHH's and keep thinking." See my full reaction now!

I almost fell off my chair when you said you weren't hearing any catchy parts. And you'd literally just come out of the first chorus. Say what?? That chorus has hooks left, right and centre. This is one of their absolute best. Those vocal harmonies in the chorus are exquisite and the melody is just stunning.

There’s that one line that ALWAYS gets me…

  • @scottnichols3685

Anybody that has gone out with a narcissist can relate to the lyrics, especially if you were totally blindsided when they dumped you. Very relatable for many people. My favorite line is, “Sometimes when I’m lonely, I sit and think about him.” I’ve never been one to lament failed relationships but I can still relate to this.

The melody isn't catchy? It is one of the sweetest melody ABBA ever did! Every song, which is a bit different from Dancing Queen, Dereck describes this as "experimental". The entire ABBA-catalogue and the group's developement throughout their 10 years is an experiment, so to say.

    • @kyachdistent1301
      @kyachdistent1301 Před 9 měsíci

Exactly. Hell the still ignored "Waterloo" albums and follow-up are very experimental. The blends are amazing and it really works. People are odd and just expect a 'Dancing Queen' sound all the time, but that is not just them, they cover all sorts of things!

  • @joffness2

This song grows on you. The octave harmonies in the verses and then the magic ABBA sound of the chorus. There are lots of harmonies going on there. If you listen carefully in the final chorus as they sing "...you're in paridise" you can hear Agnetha singing a high pitched "yeaahhhhh" When I hear that it's kind of haunting, like I'm 10 years old hearing the song for the first time.

I adore Angeleyes. It seems so simple but the production is very complex. There are so many musical elements swirling around in the mix. The harmonies in the chorus are to die for, particularly Frida's lower harmony. Then the song goes in a slightly different direction at the end which makes it even better. You feel that the song's protagonist cannot gets this bad person out of her head, which makes it very poignant. I also want to single out Benny's almost classical synths as they are glorious throughout. Angeleyes is one of my absolute favourites.

Hey Derek, love your ABBA reactions .. your excitement and understanding of their music makes me so nostalgic, but you express exactly how all ABBA fans felt the first time hearing their next pop masterpiece... so many times I’ve read in comments that “ABBA provided a sound track to a life” and indeed same is says for me, I was a teenager when ABBA were at the height of their vocal, musical and lyrical powers.. the perfect blend of Frida and Agnetha voices, created their unique sound, Frida a mezzo soprano and Agnetha a soprano, while technically Frida’s voice was warmer/better, it’s was Agnetha’s ability to totally immerse in the lyric and express it and she could sing at the top of her range to B2 without taking a breath.. Frida was superb vocally too and could easily equally match her, moving seamlessly and expertly from chest (lower register) to head (higher register) but their signature sound was achieved by both singing at the top of their range and how they did and could sustain it was just to us ABBA fans pure magical .. they is so many examples in their songs of their amazing vocal blend, range and expertise.. they were true masters of their craft!! ❤️

I think that ABBA's lyrics are a very good interpretation as to what men actually do to us; hypnotize us - take what they want - and leave us... (sometimes!) The melodious part of where those lyrics actually feature in the Song sum up the beautiful sweet pain that some men can give us when we are so defenceless to their charms... A truly beautiful Song!

Fun fact - although already internationally super famous, Annifrid and Agneta used to help out and background sing behind other artists on the Polar label and Björn and Benny would help out playing some instrument or also sing background, simply because they happened to be in the Polar studio😃 Listen to the track "Moviestar" by Swedish Harpo and you hear them in the background😉

    Angeleyes"
is a good disco-style song, within the disco-style album "Voulez Vous"
(with the exception of the ballads "Chiquitita" and "I have a dream")
that ABBA recorded following the influences of disco music in North America with Bee Gees succes
It was together, with "Voulez Vous" as double A-side, the third single from said album, it reached # 3 in UK
In this album I prefer other songs of that style, such as
    "As good as new" and
"If it wasn't for the nights"

Me and I, Angeleyes...

ABBA is best when the song has the 3rd voice, the combination of Frida and Agnetha. This is a clear 3rd voice song and it is magic. I love the melody, especially the chorus. Magnificent song.
