      But this time it's different only because Putler can use it to rattle his rusty sabre. It's not meant as a threat to other governments, it's meant to threaten the citizens of those countries who haven't yet noticed that these are the same empty threats Russia has been spouting for 50 years, and who don't necessarily know the difference between strategic and tactical, or how common this is.

    Since the Gas/Oil fields are in the Siberian Permafrost, stopping the flow results in the oil flow freezing up and dealing with that as when you 're-open the well' is the BIGGEST ISSUE.
    + most of their Oil 'Infrastructure' was built by the West, so Maintenance Personnel, spare parts are quite impossible with the Western sanctions on Russia still operating.

    • @arthurmiller-vl6sw

      Not sure if that is true. Only 15% of russian oil comes from “Artic” or permafrost regions where 80% of gas is from the same region.
      Unless it is a super heavy crude that needs steam to extract (think oil sands) then the oil won’t actually freeze at permafrost temps.
      Not saying it isn’t a nice dream but we the West tend to portray russia in worse conditions than they are and then disappointed when their markets aren’t crashing as predicted.

      Sometimes it can be very useful to provoke the aggressor. They are quite often driven by an obsession with the image of strength. That makes them somewhat controllable.
      A good example of this is how Ukraine is using drones to plant Ukrainian flags on highly observable points across the river in the Kherson area. The Russian commanders promptly send some poor sod to remove it, who instantly gets shot by a sniper or grenaded by a drone. The commanders know they're in deep trouble if too many images of Ukrainian flags in Russian controlled areas reach the internet. And all that trouble comes from Putin's fragile little ego. The flags themselves have no practical implications. But Putin's ego has practical implications if provoked right.

    Its worth saying thay nato 155 mm shells are not eqvivalent to russian shells.
    Fistly most of the russian shells are 115mm. The 152mm is similar to nato 155mm but have shorter range. And then also have 203mm shells in small numbers.
    So when they say that russia got 7 times more shells, most of them are 115mm. They are really more comparable to 120mm mortar
    I would also argue that 152mm and 155mm shells are not equivalent. There is loads of differences like the 155mm shell have better seals and higher quality cordite. Aerodynamics is also generally better for the 155mm shell. This of cause make it more complicated and expensive to produce
    The benefit of the 155mm is not only greater range, but also considerably higher accuracy,.
    There is also other advantages. 155mm shells are almost totally inert before it have a fuse. So it can be handled on pallets that make the logistics very simple. 155 systems also tend to be propelled by bag propellant, and some (like Pzh2000 and Archer) use modular bag propellant. Allowing them not only to went of, but also decrease the propellant charge. Additionally lowing the logistic impact.
    The 152mm shells on the other hand come packed one by one with propellant. This leave a huge pile of boxes after they fired as well as needing a considerable more amount of man power on the front line
    The precision of something like a 155mm system, specially the modern one with radar calibration is just way higher. While it may not be first shell first kill every time. Second shell will pretty much always be on target. Allowing the enemy much less time to take shelter.
    *Speculation* Something like archer could in theory fire a slow shell, re-calibrate the fire mission, the fire a fast shell, having the second shell effectively arrive before the first shell *Speculation*
    While the Russian 152mm system probably would need to fire 5-10 shells to reliably hit a small target.
    Of cause, in the cases of that just needing to saturate the battlefield, this make the benefit of the 155mm shell much smaller. Still a modern system as a archer could link up to have a large number of shells hit specific grids on the battle field next to each other simultaneous, still having a more efficient use of ammunition
    So its not fair to say that Russia produce more shells and there for is in a better position. Ukraine probobly have 2 or even 3 times better payout for there shells if not even more.
    Of cause, Ukraine is still using some dumb artillery systems. Giving them more smart systems could probobly increase there payout of the sells even more.
    Of cause its not only Archer and pzh2000 that are smart system, but also later generation Cesar, Zuzna and M109.
    Russia also have smart artillery, but they only have 12 units so far, and as far as i know, they have not been deployed in Ukraine.
    Main takeaway from this is really that 1M 155mm shells is not the same as 1M 152mm shells.

    • @andersjjensen
      @andersjjensen Před 24 dny

      1) We have not used cordite in shells for a loooong ass time.
      2) Simultaneous impact is a feature of many modern 155mm howitzers, including Archer, PzH2000, Cesar, M109A7 Paladin (that I know of - there are probably others).
      3) The main difference between 152mm and 155mm is manufacturing specification. 155mm has really tight tolerances compared to 152mm. If Russia produced better barrels and shells they should be able to push the 152mm to similar distances as the 155mm.

    @avarion9538 Před 24 dny +3

    There is something, some people don't know: There is no big, red button. There are many people involved, it can't just happen.
    There was an accident, where a russian satallite malfunctioned, and reported, something like a dozen ICBMs would start from the US to the USSR. He was in a submarine, and after this alarm, after the system was unlocked because it saw multiple ICBMs starting, there he had the choice to press a button and nuke the US with his submarine, as defensive measure.
    He didn't do it, because he figuered, the US wouldn't attack the USSR with just 10 or 20 ICBMs, it would be everything. So he didn't attack, and it came out, the satellite malfunctioned, and some sparkling on the air, or water reflection triggered all of that.
    USSR fired him for not following the doctrin, for not firing the nukes. No joke. That was maybe the closest earth was to a nuclear war. It was September 1983, if you want to look it up.
    So something like that, something like a reactive "red button", that seems to be a thing, or, at least, it was. But there isn't an offensive red button. For something like that, you have multiple people involved, multiple people have to authorize it, like Putin, for sure an army commander, high ranking general, the minister of defense, the prime minister or the vice prime minister, maybe even the council for coordination, that exists since something like 2023. I don't know, who exactly has to make the decision, but it's multiple people, not Putin alone.
    Also it's against the russian doctrin, so it's basically illegal, to just fire the nukes. The only country I know about, that has preventive nuclear strikes in its doctrin, is France. They can fire, if they think, they have to defend themselves. Russia can't.
    Also maintaining nukes is expensive, modern nukes with Plutonium are pretty complex, so the explosives have to be in top condition, so a huge percentage of russian nukes most likely wouldn't even work. They don't have the money to replace the Plutonium and the explosives. 🤷‍♂

I would think the Democratic world could offer quite a lot of "encouragement" to reject Russian totalitarianism. From the images of the protests in Georgia, the people do not need much "encouragement" to reject Russia. Thanks Artur.
