TFW Austin leaves you hanging for a fist bump....feels bad @ RPE 10.
Barbell Medicine sometimes it do be like that
I love how Jordan's example of a layoff is when he did Crossfit for an extended period of time.
The man was lifting in nationals, and got diagnosed with prostate cancer. Damn. Can't begin to imagine how much that hurts.
That's such a drastic turn. I wonder how old that guy is.
@@TheLouisianan Who dat? ;)
Just got diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis and went from powerlifting to no lifting for ~6 months.. used to be squating low 400 and benching high 200/low 300.
Finally got treatment for it and when getting back under the bar 225 feels SUPER heavy. Thanks for this!
Good on you for getting back in the gym, most people with AS would resign themselves to piloting the couch for the rest of their lives. Autoimmune disease certainly add new challenges to training, I got lucky and was given two of them. I found my enjoyment in training through figuring out how to work around the new obstacles, and resetting my perspective to becoming that best I can be now.
@@nickvoelker7180 Cheers man
You're absolutely right! I feel the issue with the "PR loss" mindset is that there is no perspective to the whole scenario. The goal is training for the long haul, and training is only a linear progression at the first 6 months. After that, its more like a Cha-Cha...two steps forward, CHA-CHA-CHA
Love what you guys are doing, and I hope I can still get a seat in Chicago this year!
Somehow I managed to understand everything you both were talking about, props to how digestible you make complex subjects
I would also address it as reframing/managing expectations and the mindset. Like, "Okay, you have gotten weaker because of a reason/reasons outside of your control right now but which one of the two alternatives would push you to the right direction? Training or not training?" "If you train, no matter how you're performing compared to your former self, you'll be better off than you're non-training future self would be."

And, a bit of novelty. This is a great little clip. Thanks.
Just change your goal post ...Boom! (Fml)
Awesome!
So essentially, adjust training to create mastery experiences, which in turn boost self efficacy and adherence. Sweet.
I just re -ran starting strength ....come at me
That book should be titled "Fluff and Puff - enjoy training and be FABULOUS in teh gym!"
Personally, I walk in, work up to a somewhat heavy single trying to keep good technique, then do a small amount of volume accordingly.
In regards to the video:
My returning to the gym was also accompanied by weight loss, so being a little weaker than I once was hasn’t been too hard for me. Especially considering I’m not as significantly weaker as I originally thought I’d be.
Throughout the entire video I was saying "move the goal posts.. Just. Move. The goal posts...." then Jordan steals my thunder at the end...
The problem with these type of people is, they lived in the past. You know how it goes “ i used to lift blah blah and blah” there is nothing wrong with going back from scratch for longevity and sustainability of training. Fitness and training will never be linear.
It's been 8 month since I hit the gym, I gained 28 lbs, first day in 😩
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL "Starting Enjoyment" AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA IM DEADDDD 💀🤣
What about reframing a trainee's mind toward enjoyment not only by changing exercise variation ? I mean the focus stay on "numbers" and "PR's" to enjoy training... Sure it works for a few weeks but getting excited in training only because of numbers seems illusive to me. Why not enjoying the rudimentary art of lifting weight just for the sake of it ? It's hard in powerlifting to not focus on PR's since it's the main goal of this sport. For a competitive athlete OK but for non-competitive trainees I see less interest to keep focusing on numbers.
Just do it! Habit and life style...
Crossfit kills your gainzzz
Hey guys,
I'm probably going to be going through this due to COVID-19 (gym is closed for at least 4 weeks, possibly 8 weeks). I just finished my first week of the SS program - how much of a detriment do you think this time away from the essential lifts will be? I'll be trying to substitute what I can at home, but I won't have access to a barbell for quite some time. Thanks!
If SS refers to starting strength I wouldn't worry at all
“Possibly 8 weeks”
@@themonkeydoo3 Iol I know man. If OP still needs an answer though, being a novice isn't a big deal at all because you hardly have a base anyway. Just restart SS after gyms open up sometime in 2024
Austin is constantly drinking
What are you gonna do, not drink.
@Maxx P. We are all gonna die anyhow.
