@@adamsmith8307 It takes a gifted actor to play 'stupid boy'. His intelligence was never in doubt since his characterisation was so convincing. He also took the opportunity, I heard, to hone his craft by watching the rest of the company. Happy days! It would be good to see more of him.

Saw him in a pilot comedy in Manchester, where he played a dentist. Circa 1982. Didn't take off, but he seemed really nice. I recall being struck how silver grey his hair was then.

That anecdote about the New Zealand radio interview is hilarious but obviously somewhat poignant today. Ian Lavender was much more talented than just the "stupid boy" role. I remember he was brilliant as the shy Liberal candidate trying to get Miss Jones' vote in one episode of Rising Damp. RIP Ian - I still laugh my head off when the "Don't tell him Pike!" scene comes on.

Ian lavender was paid £51 a week back when dads army started, that's about 3 times the average weekly wage at the time, he was only 22 and unknown.
Arthur lowe was on £170 a week and the rest of the cast were earning between £80 and £210 a week, those wages would have doubled by series 2 and 3.
So pretty good for what was just a tv sitcom, plus they earned a heck of a lot for rerun fees, personal appearances etc.
Better than Digging up the roads in all weather 6 days a week or working 60 hours in a factory for just a fraction of that.
Never seen an interview with a tv actor who hasnt said " we weren't paid much"
They are not saving lives or putting thier lives on the line, they are simply actors learning a script written by a script writer and performing infront of a camera, its only entertainment

@@Tad1945 A good question! I think my comment referred to the post which compared actors somewhat unfavourably to people working in manual jobs or "saving lives". It is not a good comparison as actors and doctors / manual workers are valuable and needed for a well-functioning society. As for Dad's Army, audiences are still laughing nearly 60 years on. Laughter has been said to be "the best medicine" and whatever the actors were paid, it has been good value for money.
