The Remarkable Success of the Tissot PRX: An Affordable Icon?

  • A Discussion around the extremely successful Tissot PRX. An integrated bracelet sports watch that possesses all of the elements that makes "Genta Inspired" watches unique. Some would say it copies the designs belonging to brands like Audemars Piguet, but I see it as a faithful homage in some way. A love letter by a proudly Swiss company that celebrates the designs of its contemporaries.

What are your thoughts on the Tissot PRX? A Tribute, Homage or a Rehash?
Something to add: I believe the Original PRX name stood for Precision - Reliable - Ten (X meaning 10 meters of water resistance back then) Today the modern PRX is rated at 10Atm or 100 Meters.

Absolutely love my Automatic PRX with the blue waffle dial. But what catches my eye the most is how light plays off the indices, whether indoors under artificial lights, or outdoors in the sun, light flashes off the indices in a brilliant sparkle that captures the light. I'm nearly two months in with the PRXS, and I can't bring myself to replace it with another watch on my watch rotation wrist!

Love this channel. No watch snobbery, no being lead by current fashions or other CZcams “influencers” but a really solid understanding of both the history of watchmaking and how design trends inside and outside the horological world have helped shape the look of great and not so great watches.
The PRX is a shining example of how to make a desirable but still affordable piece that is both retro and yet timeless. I must get round to adding one to my collection soon!

@@ID-Guy Pleasure. I truly appreciate the manner in which you slice and dice watches, presenting technical and visual characteristics. Yes, Tissot (and other brands) are really starting to provide serious value for money with time pieces that are very attractive to many watch collectors. I am an avid one and prefer to have a range of brands instead of just a few which are simply hard to comes by nowadays. For example, Longines have recently made some excellent pieces with the Spirit and Diver range. Tag’s new Aquaracer collection (200m and 300m) are excellent in looks, quality and pricing.

I have only owned diver, flieger and field oriented watches. The additional function and archetypal history kind of gets me. I was on holiday in Istanbul 2 weeks ago when I saw the Prx. I never considered it, but i asked to put it on and just bought it. While being the lowest priced piece in my collection i actually think it’s great and will keep it. The bracelet is great (half links helped me get it perfect and being brushed it doesn’t catch wear&tear), the case and proportions are spot on, clean dial, movement is -2 (beat error perfect), SPOT ON. And i don’t feel it’s an exaggerated niched “integrated-genta”, It’s just a good looking watch.

I own the 35mm quartz and agree with everything you said. I don't consider it being quartz a knock, even though some watch snobs may scoff at that. It makes the case thinner, it's true to the original, has a more original dial instead of the derivate waffle dial of the auto, and overall is more reliable and accurate. It's the perfect everyday, do it all, grab and go watch esp with sapphire crystal, solid bracelet and end links, milled clasp and 100m water resistance

    I love the PRX.
I bought the brushed silver with gold hands/indicies - in quartz.
In its P'matic form it's very much a 'greatest hits' design (as you said) taking the best elements of many of the best icons of the style.
In quartz guise it's pretty much a straight up Oysterquartz copy. Somehow that made it even more appealing to me!
There is something about this watch - in fact it's the thing that I like about it the most, is how a quartz PRX is symbolic of both the blow that put the Swiss watch industry *into* the ICU and the style of watch that created a path *out* of it. And it pays homage to a watch that is the product of a moment when the mighty Crown buckled and deviated from its established methodology (can you imagine that now? A solar Explorer anyone?).
In any case - I love the story this watch tells and if you are going to own one Swiss quartz watch, this is a great choice.

I cannot disagree with any of your comments in this video IDGuy. When the PRX launched I wasn't that bothered with all the hype even though I have a few Tissot watches and I still wear them. It was only when I was at the AD looking at another watch (I can't remember which one) that if I recall was not purchased that I spotted the PM80 blue dial in the flesh. I asked to have a look at it and to be honest I was gob smacked by the quality of the finish for the price not that I've had any issue with Tissot finishing. I tried it on and the deal was done. It's slim, very comfortable, stylish, affordable (comparing to the options in this video) and available. The original was released in my mid teens and I remember the ads for it. I've had mine for ~9 months or more and I smile (possibly out of nostalgia I dunno) as it once again goes on the wrist instead of another watch that cost a fair bit more. It's not my daily watch but it could easily fit the bill for most days. This design has already aged to the point where to me it has already become a modern usable classic.

Although I favor the Genta-designed Nautilus over the Royal Oak (again, I have a soft spot for square-ish cases/dials), I do acknowledge the historical and horological significance of the Royal Oak considering when it was released.
Immitation may be the most sincerest form of flattery, but I do agree that this design has been "adopted" to death; even cheap fashion watches have their own Royal Oak-inspired models.
Genta designed a watch that, unbeknownst to him, would become so timeless and iconic that other brands, big or small, couldn't help wanting to ride that train.
I could also make some parallels with the Glock striker-fired pistol (I first became aware of this gun when I saw "Die Hard 2"). Nowadays many of the major firearms manufacturers have their own Glock-inspired models with tweaks in design here and there.

I think you got it right: there's no one factor that makes a watch a success. Tissot managed to get everything right in one watch: design (case and dial both), quality, and of course price. I think the fact that it has the essential good looks of the design, without the ostentation, is also a big factor in its popularity. It says that while you have the good taste to appreciate a 222, you have the good sense not to buy one. The same combination of factors is behind the Moonswatch phenomenon. I think Swatch management has this recipe well in hand, and look forward to their next rollout... maybe a GMT or diver in the same price range.
