Dick Grayson in my eyes is the best Robin. The idea of Dick Grayson witnessing his parents die right in front of him due to the corruption and apathy of a too far deep within the pits of hell, must and is a devasting event to witness, and a traumatic experience that no child should ever have been scarred with. As such Dick was fortunate to have a glimmer of hope in the bleak and dark world he was forced to come to terms with, that hope was a man who understood Dick's pain and instead of leaving that child with no hope and no family, Bruce chose to do something he hasn't been able to do in a long time... and that's to care, to raise, to teach, to love an innocent child that still had the chance to view the world as not such a bad place. To also be the father that Bruce lost so that this child can grow to become a man with a good heart and a noble moral compass, but not only to be good... but to be better than Bruce could ever be.
Dick Grayson growing to be his own hero and the leader of a team of young superheroes is a sign that Bruce did his job and gave a child a better life. Not only that but as such he began a catalyst, sparking a match in the youthful eyes of Gotham, showing that despite the rapid siege of crime that plagues the street can be easy and grant you what you desire... there still will be a better way and a better route you can take. You may not be able to go around in spandex and fight criminals and murders, but you can still be a person who doesn't view the world where your only path is through crime, racketeering, corruption, but through the helping and protection of others. To me, that's what Robin represents, and what Dick Grayson as Robin started as well.

The Joker did push Dick into "killing" him when he thought Tim got killed by him. Nightwing has had a habit of going completely psycho when he thinks his younger siblings are in trouble. Dick is aware of what Batman is and he has first hand experience of Bruce's shortcomings BUT Dick is also moulded by Batman's methods and so, he inevitably leans back into those methods. What I think encapsulates Dick's character is how he got the name Nightwing. That story is a simple one, but a good moment for Dick and Superman. Dick had quit being Robin and was guiding the Titans at that moment, but he still wanted to be in the fight. seeing as he wasn't on speaking terms with Bruce, Dick, went to speak with Superman. Superman tells him the story of the hero of krypton, who had the name Nightwing. In turn, when the story Judas Contract came, and Dick first becomes Nightwing, it is as if a new light has shone on the former Robin.
What I mean with this story is that Dick is equal to Bruce in many ways, but his character has a light that rivals superman. He is a kinder batman, a darker superman, a good man fighting in the dark, hoping to shine a light to others. Dick is the compassion of the Bat family and a character that thankfully came back to the comics (We will never speak of the Ric incident again).

Dick is my favorite comic book character of all time. He has all the trauma of Batman, yet refuses to fall into that darkness. He uses it to fuel his fight to overcome his adoptive father's toxic behavior and patterns. He wants to leave legacy of light and pure heroics, that's why he spends so much time with the youth.
He's not the smartest (that's Tim), or the most outright skilled (arguably Damian). But no one would ever question that he's the only Robin to fully outgrow that mantle and become a hero in his own right. Equal and in many ways superior to Bruce.
Nightwing is kinda like DC's Spiderman. Incorruptible, friendly, everyone knows him, he's a part of every team in some capacity, and if he died the entire hero world would stop to mourn him.
I would kill to get a comic book accurate tv series on him in the vein of Daredevil! One half detective, one half hero. It would be awesome!

From the retcon of his deep and strong relationship with Tim and even connection to Jason, to the mishandling of his amnesia arc. Even on tv theres this push to make him more dark and gritty when that’s the opposite of what dick Grayson is. The animated media has probably presented him the best of all but even then the light is rarely shone on him.
The fact that he is a linchpin in the dc universe, with how well acquainted he was with almost everyone and particularly the big leagues, is being more and more forgotten. He is the metaphorical first child to really step in and make a presence in the dc hero world and with it comes the particular closeness he has with everyone he meets. Whether they see him as a niece/nephew/brother. The injustice series was probably the last time it was really exhibited, with his death being a dark omen. Dick Grayson is truly Batman's greatest success because in Young Justice I remember Batman telling Diana that he took Dick in just so that he doesn't become like Bruce in his persuit for vengeance for his family's death and as far as I'm concerned he succeeded with flying colours, Nightwing is everything Batman couldn't be he's a true leader, he plays well with everyone, he shows actual compassion and kindness towards everyone (Bruce also is compassionate but he's unable to show it like Dick) and he's found peace with his existence overcoming the grief his parent's death gave him which Bruce still hasn't (he still blames himself for his parents death). The genius of all this is Batman and Nightwings stories are eerily similar yet Nightwing has completely filled in the void and redeemed his character flaws that Batman to this day hasn't been able to do and If I'm not wrong I think Bruce totally acknowledge this as well that Nightwing has far surpassed Batman

The Dick-Bruce dynamic and relationship is central to several of my favourite interpretations of Batman's character. Obviously Dick is a great character in his own right, but I also think what he brings out in Bruce can (and, imo, should) be extremely meaningful and insightful when portrayed correctly. I hate it when Batman is just portrayed as this angsty robot who hates/dgaf about everyone rather than a man who has very deeply felt emotions that he struggles to express or even understand. I think interactions between him and Dick really draw out those emotions in illuminating ways. I also think that, as Bruce's first son, he kind of helped heal a little of Bruce's trauma by giving him a family again.

I think when it comes to the bat family BATMAN made a horrible mistake. He forgot that people, especially his squires, are individuals. He adopted Grayson and his naturally charismatic and enthusiastic demeanor made his training, schooling, and temperament easy for Bruce to work with. After Dick was all grown up, Bruce thought “hey that was easy, lets do it again” and he adopted the far more troublesome, temperamental, stubborn, and egotistical Jason Todd. Who would prove to be far more of a challenge that Dick ever was. While Bruce could take Dick to all their functions (masked and unmasked like balls, and parties) and Dick would act mature and charismatic, Jason was a problem child, in one issue I believe he gets caught smoking and almost burns down Wayne manor. However I don’t think its any surprise that Todd mostly happened when Dick was distancing himself from the Bat, and therefore Jason got to spend the least amount of time with the confident, protective, and charismatic Dick Grayson. Eventually leading to Jasons “death” at the hands of the joker. Next came Tim and Damian who both got to spend alot of time with Dick and its no doubt they turned out better but still not as well as dick. Simply i think it comes down to this, Dick Grayson got Bruce at his best, he got a Bruce who was as eager to teach Grayson as Grayson was to learn. Bruce never had an apprentice before and was willing to learn. But by the time of Jason he thought he knew everything, and failed, leading to his failure in Tim and Damian, both looking up to Dick more than Bruce.

As many have already pointed out Dick is the perfect combination of Superman and Batman, and in a way superior to both.
While Batman roams the streets fighting thugs with his broody nature, Superman fights the big fights, usually out of touch from a majority of the general public
Dick brings that light of hope from Superman to street level, giving compassion to even his enemies and becomes a man of his own

I don’t know that it’s accurate to call Damian “the most skilled robin”. Maybe he was the most skilled when the robins were at that age. But he’s been beaten by all the robins at least once. Is he skilled? Yes. Most skilled? No.

    • @chinyereugwu9431
      @chinyereugwu9431 Před 3 lety +34

What Robin at age 10 was anywhere near as skilled as Damian? None. Damian has been beaten once by Jason Todd and has never been beaten by Tim Drake. Damian has beaten Jason twice [both times aged 10 and Jason was in his 20's] and he has fought Tim seriously once Robin war {damian was 10 and Tim was 18] and Damian beat him.
The bat office tweeted a ranking of the batfamily in combat Dick is no 2, Damian is no 4, Jason is no 7 and Tim is no 10.
Again what Robin at age 10 comes anywhere near Damian? No not even Bruce at age 10 was anywhere near Damian's level

Its a compassion that resonates so well and that I corny as it is try to use in my life compassion to all you come across.
