    What is your biggest sparring pet peeve that drives you crazy???
    Mine is pulling the head kick politely only to get punched in the head as I place my foot on the ground.

      My pet peeve is people that say "I'm new, let's go light and technical", and then proceed to start winging trying to put a hole through my head. Generally new people will need time to learn control, but it's still a bit of a dick move to start by going 80% to 100% to the head. I don't mind body conditioning, but I like my brain.

      My peeve: pulling back on a knee strike and having the other person grab that leg to try dumping me 🙄

      when I keep kicking slower to make it light and they keep catching and sweeping... but if I speed up it will be strong kicks and will escalate 🙃

      Blind, uncontrolled spinning backfist (blind techniques in general). Great fighting technique when it lands, but in sparring SEEING before hitting is crucial for control.

    The last point is my biggest pet peeve! If you take a light shot that could have been a real damaging shot at full power, do not walk through it. Acknowledge and reset because in a real fight that's a knockdown, stunner, or knockout. You got caught don't walk through it and start throwing like nothing happened.

      Agreed. The only time i recommend walking through things like that is when you and your partner agree to light technical sparring focusing on blocking and reaction.

    I hate it when somebody cant control his/her strength. Especially when the weight difference is huge and they are throwing to the head. I am experienced so I'll go very light. Sometimes so light that people think I am weaker even though I have years of experience over them. The tip of the iceberg is when i kick light and slower and the opponent takes full advantage of that and rips my head of and thinks he won that battle. But If I would throw every attack with full power and speed they would never have a chance to counter it.

      I feel that. Sometimes they need to be humbled because to protect myself and gain more respect 😐. I like the mentallity of thai fighters and gyms

    I was taught that good sparring partners are a gift. If you break each other, there goes someone that could have helped you grow. Iron sharpens iron and such. One thing I would like to add is more so on coaches. Killing the toxic sport combat mentality that everyone needs to go hard. Not everyone in the gym is trying to be a professional fighter or even a competitor. At my gym we all spar together. I make it clear to anyone that comes in you fight who is in front of you respectfully and with good control. regardless be they your size or bigger or greater skill or even a 14 year old girl. its just important to know how to work with people overall.

    I think one of mine is oblique kicks to the knee. I don’t like it one bit. I work a full time job, train around 5-10 hours a week. I’m training for a amateur thai boxing fight. Some one tears my knee up it will really be detrimental. If someone’s going to throw that it isn’t respectful and I will treat that person with no respect for the remainder of the round

    I see bigger guys always get talked about in a derogatory way in these kind of videos. I’m 6”2 225 and I have a much more technical approach I always have to deal with shorter guys throwing kill shots and when I spar women they’re typically unsafe thinking the size disadvantage means they can go 100%.

      It's because for every big guy with control (you) there are 10 that will knock your head off and still say they are going "light". All newcomers have difficulty matching their opponents intensity but its more noticeable with larger people so they get the brunt of the criticism

      @@awejots nah ive had big dudes flat out go 100 % clearly from their face when I was sparring them. I don't know what it is but I think big dudes often like to prove some point when your a skilled lighter fighter to try to prove they can hurt you or something cause I notice they do usually go very light when its a below average fighter but when its someone they consider good, they will try to take your head off. its hard to deal with but you just have to reamain composed imo and look for counters. Most important thing is not to shell up and let hard shots keep you from throwing back at them. Many guys often think if they go light or touch the opponent tehy will throw lighter but actually you have to throw harder. If they fear your power they will begin to take it down a notch.

    As someone who has been hurt by partners who don’t acknowledge your pulled power on strikes that went unchecked I agree wholeheartedly and appreciate. Sadly, there will be guys who won’t listen.

    I hate when you are purposely throwing slow, controlled kicks to not hurt your opponent and then they catch it and dump you.

    My way of acknowledging a KO on me like a liver shot is to back off and tap the area affected while nodding. Kinda developed naturally but it works for me.

    I got a concussion in sparring about a week ago from a head kick. Was the dudes first time sparring and I guess he boxed before or something and thats why they let him. I'm sure it was accident since he probably doesn't have the control needed for kicks like that. Coaches gotta crack down more on rules for sparring.

      I sparred a beginner (4 weeks of training...) last week. He was stiff and tense... I was just lightly touching him but he had no control or whatsoever and just tried to rip my head off. I usually drop my guard to practice head movement if possible but I needed to shell up. I happened that I got a bit frustrated and clipped him with an uppercut. The ego thing can escalate quickly. I am not mad at him, but I fully agree that sparring etiquette can't be told often enough by trainers and coaches.

    Thank you CHAMP you showed that the good fighter should be calm and the shots he lands must be controlled before even power. At my gym, we usually spar 40% with respect to the size, and the experience. been 2 years and almost I had no major injuries or enemies sometimes it's happened but all I do is control myself and find the moment for the counter.

    My biggest pet peeve when sparring with someone is when they get in their feelings. Like we all came here to train and get better right? Even when you throw 20% or 10% at people tap them on the button they will start crying. I'm at the gym to get better not for the popularity contest.

    My pet hate is landing something soft, soft jab or soft head kick especially. Then they reset and go super hard to get it back.. I hate it!!!! Accept you got caught and catch me back.... Especially when it's agreed to go light and play with technique beforehand

    As much as I appreciate this video and like ones, it always baffles me that it’s needed. Sparring politely is as easy as communicating with your partner beforehand and then committing to the agreed upon “line.”
    I think most breaks in courtesy happen when someone is trying to preserve their ego or build a “tough” image. The vast majority of the time it just makes you look like a turd.

    Its like this channel and Jeff Chan`s channel work like clock work! Jeff gave a preview of a sparring session that was about to get ugly. It got triggered the exact same way Brandon explained. His partner came in and landed lunging hook and Jeff didnt like it. Jeff returned a clean leg kick and it was on from there. I think its fair to say that any fast lunging hook is threatening enough to escalate a spar war regardless of how controlled it is. Perhaps some people can do it without a fight breaking out but thats the pattern I see.

    It’s hard sometimes because if you throw out a light punch and your partner runs into it, they perceive it as a power punch. I’ve been apologized too in the end when they see that I’m still trying to go light as they blast me but it sucks when your the lightest person and it feels like anything you do will be perceived as you trying to make a statement or prove something. I’ve had to go harder than I wanted on a couple of occasions but most people lay off after.

    Encountered my biggest pet peeve last night, im a beginner and so was my opponent. At times i would counter but stop right before contact and land at around 10-20%. I don’t know if my opponent was getting frustrated but out of nowhere he goes from 30-40% to a huge overhand that was around 80% power which ended up giving me a black eye. I took a break for a round and saw with his next opponent that he constantly switched from low intensity to high intensity which confused opponents and gave mixed signals. It was super unsafe to others around the gym, hopefully its just poor etiquette because it was unfair to other beginners taking unnecessary damage.

      You need to speak up, both for your own and others' safety. At the gym I go to the instructors (all experienced fighters) emphasise and enforce safe practices. If they won't do anything find another gym.

    yea i had some joker getting mad at me one time because he kept blocking in a way where my punches went to his face a few times. He started complaining and my coach Josh Jauncey actually started getting mad at me because the guy was there longer. I had to really restrain myself from not getting out of line on both coach and complainer. I even apologized but never again! hahaha. Sometimes even if you do things right people will try to become your enemy.

    That was really good... I have one partner in the gym who comes in with haymakers to close the distance and although he is 20-30 lbs more than me and I should tell him not to... I am trying to make myself not flinch and shell, but to learn to control and neutralize or somehow deal with this kind of fighter... work still in progress, but so far I haven't gotten hit clean, so no problems yet... he is not trying to kill me on purpose just some guys have hard time with controlling themselves (it is more of a mental than physical problem)

I have to train my mind & body not to do that and I have a bad (almost non existent) side-to side movement I am too linear. I could just side step from his charge like a matador vs a bull but I need to rewire my brain for it... like I said, work in progress lol

      @@SZzWoWzZS He actually respects me and we are on good terms. He says that is the only way he can get me as I am longer and faster with a better distance. He just doesn't have proper control and I think he just really gets into it. If I start hiting back hard he just gets worse lol... I don't want a concussion that bad! I will find a way to solve this, I have made it one of my challenges!

    My friend accidentally did the first to me and I started going hard on him lol. Everyone thought I was a gun bully after that and I had to reassure them it was disrespectful What he did. I’d like to think he’s better and more controlled with his kicks than me and I’ve NEVER landed an actual front kick on anyone’s face. I always stop it at their face.

    When going 50% and I am about to land a kick to my partners thigh, they will then go 100% to check my kick resulting in a weird collision where I end up getting bruised.

    Each gym can be so different. Know upfront what is fair game or not! I went to a gym and I wouldn't think it would be good to knee people in the body full on. So i just simulated it, but then I didn't expect that it was OK there. lol So a dude threw a heavy knee to my ribs. I was wondering why. But the instructor was fine with it. lol Also They allowed hard knees to the body but they got mad if I threw controlled sidekicks.
    Didn't make alot of sense.. You never know what the instructor likes and doesn't like when your new. You can be eating heavy shots or pissing people off throwing safer techniques. It can get strange.

      It works well. We have only 1 person in 3 years get slept on my mats. He had to sit out 90 days. He tried to come back at 60 and he even said something still didn’t feel right.
