The wealth of knowledge she has is truly incredible, honoured to host Medha ma'am at our space for such fantastic episodes we created with her. REAL Stories Of Indian History Uncovered - Watch out.
Medha Bhaskaran, from the year 2000 onwards, started studying Mughal Maratha history as she felt passionate about it. More than a hundred books were referred to, forts visited, and discussions with historians, weapon experts and other people involved in the subjects continued. She is the author of Shivaji's bestselling biography, Challenging Destiny. Amazon Link: www.amazon.in/....
This episode is a 3-part conversation starting from the rule of the Mughal Empire, before the Shivaji Maharaj era, then part 2 where we talk about the times when India saw the rise of Shivaji Maharaj, and then comes part 3 where we talk about his final vision. I'm forgetting the exact name but there was this one senior royal woman in the Mughal Empire who had objected to Khusrau being handed to Khurram (later Shah Jahan) as she knew that Shah Jahan would kill him. She said that it would start a procedure where Mughals would execute their entire families to become Emperor.
If you look back before Jahangir, Humayun and Akbar had both faced rebellions from their brothers. But they both never executed their brothers, instead stripping them of their privileges and asking them to go for pilgrimage to Mecca. When Jahangir became Emperor, his two brothers Murad and Daniyal had already died. But Shah Jahan started killing his brothers and by 1628, he had killed all his brothers (Khusrau, Parvez, Shahryar). Shah Jahan then also executed Hoshang Mirza and Dawar Baksh, the sons of his uncles Murad and Daniyal.
Later on these actions would come back to haunt Shah Jahan, when he would be deposed by his own son Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb killed Shah Jahan's favourite son, Dara Shukoh along with Shah Jahan's other sons. Aurangzeb also killed Dara's son Suleiman who Shah Jahan had considered the 7th Emperor.

Ashoka was also very cruel who killed 2 lakh people in Kalinga (modern day Orissa). It is only after this that he had a change of heart and he adopted Buddhism. Pushyamitra Sunga, the last emperor of Mauryan dynasty, killed thousands of peaceful Buddhist monks of India and destroyed their monasteries. So cruelty is not confined to Muslim kings. Any king will become cruel if you get in his way.

Honestly I feel we cannot just blame one particular emperor for the cruelty, cruel was (or still is) the society (also can't overlook their lineage genetics). Romanticizing such stories are honestly laughable. Historical romance genre is no doubt appealing, but being irresponsible towards the public and the real history is utterly shameful and ridiculous.

Political infighting, killing relatives for power, religious intolerance, multiple wives and not giving respect to women those days were so common. Pushyamitra sangha, dhana nanda, chandragupta maurya, ashoka, bimbisara, ajathshatru, raghoji bhonsle, tarabai(who disguised her son for power), mihirakaula all are in this category. Infighting is natural whenever there is power struggle. Infact sambhaji had defected to the mughals while shivaji was alive only to return unrepentant. There are stories of Soyabai trying to put Rajaram on throne by poisoning him. Sambhaji took control of Raigad fort and imprisoned Rajaram, his wife and Soyabai and killed the commander to become a king. Sambhaji even went ahead to execute his step mom Soyabai. Actually, if you see this thing from Jahangir's point of view, this thing will seem different and even emotional. When Jahangir writes about Khusrau Mirza's escape, he says that Khusrau Mirza was distracted and preoccupied and didn't have belief in his father's affection. He also says that he should have shown the prince more affection so that not even a hair extent of doubt remained in his mind. Also, a few days after Khusrau Mirza was captured, Jahangir went to visit the Shah ara garden in Kabul along with his court and family. He ordered the chains to be taken off Khusrau's feet so that he could walk in that garden. Jahangir writes that his fatherly affection didn't allow him to exclude his son from walking in that garden. In 1619, Jahangir was probably in Vrindavan or Mathura if I am not wrong. During this time he writes that the dust from the brows of his son was washed with the pure water of forgiveness.

Kafir period of Akbar- 1578 to 1605
Whatever others say I still believe Akbar was a good moderate ruler. Initially he was an Islamic Ghazi who worked to spread Islam through sword. He massacred the entire Chitoor garrison and unarmed people including women and children after its capture. But later he commissioned statues in Agra fort to honour the bravery and sacrifice of Mewar commanders Jaimal Rathore and Patta Sisodia. He used to pay tribute to them whenever he visited Agra fort. He was a kafir because he worshipped river Ganga and Sun God ( Suryanamaskaram and Yoga was a must for him in his later life). He became a vegetarian and banned Cow slaughter and Sati. He took actions to revive ancient hindu festivals of Kumbhamela. He was patron of many ancient temples including Kashi Vishwanath and Mathura temple. He was the only Indian ruler to issue coins of Lord Rama and Sita devi ( Ram-Siyal coins). Many maulavis of that period considered Akbar as a crypto hindu and Kafir. Diwali and Holi were periodically celebrated by Akbar throughout his empire. To please islamic scholars, Akbar gave a Persian Muslim name to it i.e Jashn-e-Chiraghan. The influence of Abul Fazl and Birbal made him a kafir and liberal thinker.
