- I've dreaded this day for sometime now. I'm well familiar with this game, but it wasn't until this review where I attempted to fully complete it. It's time to review the direct sequel to the first Legend of Zelda title, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Is it really as hard as people say it is? Does it deserve it's status as the black sheep in the franchise? Only one way to find out, so let's watch and see.
- Hry
Btw... The reason you start back at the beginning of the Great Palace after a game over, rather than at Hyrule Palace like the rest of the game, has everything to do with the Japanese release. Zelda 2 was originally released on the Famicom disc system. The entire game up until the Great Palace was programmed on side A of the disc, while the Great Palace itself was on side B. So rather than forcing players to constantly keep flipping the disc after every game over in the palace, they just restarted Link right there. When the game was ported to North America, this feature was retained. And now you know. :)
Imagine if they didn't do that, and they were like "Oh yeah back to Hyrule Temple!".
GI Joe
So they had a poor way of using space.
Wow! Isn't that something.
@@randomguyontheinternet7940 Well, it was the late 80's, so they worked with what they had.
"This game will kick you in the God damned throat, and cut off your phone line to prevent you from calling the ambulance." I mean... Shit!
That game is harder than all hell
I love this game. My favorite 2d zelda game, even more so than Link to the Past, both Oracle games, Link's Awakening, and Zelda 1 COMBINED( all flame shields are up).
Eh, preference. Unless you scream that all the other games are absolute shit, you're fine with your opinion.
Guys, I'm just quoting Johnny.
I know. I was just saying I love Zelda II.
"I am Error" never gets old! :D
I want a hack where Error flickers and glitches visually.
YuukitheMighty1 Error is actually useful. A person in the last town I believe tells you to go to Error and he gives you a letter so you can meet the next wiseman. This specifically could be wrong but I remember him being useful for something.
I feel bad for the poor dude. Who the hell names their kid Error?
"I'm Johnny."
"I'm Elliot."
"And I'm Error."
For the curious, the video was supposed to end with me saying "IN YOUR FACE" complete with a camera punch. CZcams didn't think it was funny, and sloppily edited it out.
Wait really?!
CZcams can do that?!
@HaydenDoesThings It be how it be
Ah i see
Remake it now lol
"the spell named "Spell"..."
Hmm yes just like the floor named "FLOOR"!
Uncle Grapes hmm yess
The spell here is made of spell
2017: The resurrection of the jump button.
The hell does that mean?
It means you can jump in breath of the Wild.
oooooohhhhh.....
The Revival of an "Active" Jump Button hahahaha
Legend of Zelda Theres a Jump Button in this One
The cold open to this episode is still my favorite in the entire Johnny Vs. series.
Short, sweet, and tells you EXACTLY how everyone feels about this game
This game at least deserves a remake.
+Emiko Gale Yeah right! There's nothing been quite like this game in like... ever.
Id love to see a gorgeous 2d remake of this.
It's my favorite Zelda game by a longshot.
post-apocalyptic coming soon I'm actually thinking to make a 2D remake of it myself :).
But that would take me an awful lot of time :(
Its called smash
+Joseph Huynh smash and Zelda 2 are almost nothing alike apart from a few small things
5:17 Johnny "it all begins with the first palace where iron Knuckles make their debut"
iron Knuckle: "Fresh meat, fresh meat, fresh meat!"
It's crazy to think how they went from this game to link to the past. Such a massive improvement.
I'm probably one of the few people that really enjoys Zelda 2
i just realized something, Link is a freakin CHICK MAGNET! how many time in the Zelda series has a female charcter shown some affections in the Zelda series. let's see, The Great fairy in both Twilight princess and wind waker, midna in twilight princess, cia and lana in hyrule warriors, ruto in ocarina of time, marin in links awakening, and in the end of Zelda 2 link and Zelda actually kiss! forget Sonic being loved by Amy, link is the real stud here, even though he never talks or show any personality. whats your secret link?
not too mention that zelda is from another timeline yet link is from the same timeline as zelda one meaning he has 2 zeldas here
Also, every version of Zelda falls fir Link
*for
That was actually a running joke in BSC's OoT commentary.
xy394 You're late to the punch, frankly.
If we're going to put the list of girls that have shown some interest in this guy...it would be more than 30 people.
8-bit Dark Souls
🤣💯
"Stagnating the formula too soon"
*Reverts to old style in the third installment and never looks back*
Guess nintendo learned their lesson on that one
8:30-8:36 One reason I nickname this game Zeldavania.
I love how he takes his glasses off at 10:32 😂
your videos from this era are top comfy. bless you, johnny.
Miyamoto probably called that enemy thunderbird because he is a fan of that show,he also said he based animations from star fox 64 on the show
unfortunately, he didn't. He named the enemy Borba or Bolba. Some jerk in the localization team named it Thunderbird. that's why it looks nothing like a bird.
@@KairuHakubi I'd like to think the localization guy named it after the car.
@@millertime97jm hahaha that actually kinda works.
11:45 I love that little tribute to James Rofle XD
Keep it up John, you're starting to get the popularity you truly deserve.
11:45
So John, when are you reviewing the CDI games?
I don't think he owns them and doesn't want to spend money on them either.
+mario64remix he doesn't have to play the Cdi games to know how terrible they are. He would just end up reviewing what's common knowledge
+Carl Bloke I hope that's a joke. How could you review a game without playing it? Isn't he supposed to give his honest opinion?
***** he even implied in the playstation video that the cdi games were terrible. but i guess he could play it to review everything wrong with it
+Carl Bloke Johnny would never review a game without playing it first. You can't just take a random opinion about a game from the internet and make a review around it.
I'm almost certainly in the minority here, but I absolutely love this game. It's insanely challenging, but I found it a lot of fun and when I do make progress in the game it feels immensely satisfying. I actually prefer this to the first Zelda if truth be told. A Link To The Past and Link's Awakening are certainly better, but I do have a soft spot for Zelda II nonetheless.
A theory I've had for a long time, despite never being provable is that The Legend of Zelda, the entire series is just a father telling his children a bedtime story. As they get older, his tale changes to make it larger and more epic as they get used to more mature story telling. Majora's Mask is a campfire tale, Spirit Tracks and Wind Waker are him relating his stories to his children's interests. It's always just been the same story, he's just making sure his children grow up with happy memories of their old man.
Why not take that theory a step further and have it so each new game is the story being passed down though the generations. You know each new generation adding their own spin to the story as time goes on until it becomes so widespread it truly becomes a legend.
that's a really good theory, actually
Ray Vas I know. It takes away all the confusing mess of the three timelines, answers all the discordinant points, and gives it a heartwarming edge.
i can get with that. i personally don't give a FUCK about the "timelines." I like each game I've played for what it does individually. I think my favorite LoZ game(s), however, are the Oracle games and Link's Awakening; and next in line is LoZ1 and LttP. Minish Cap is good, but short. (side note, do not put down an RPG in the middle of playing, and then walk away from it for a long time.)
L-Y3T I can confirm this is true unless you know the RPG like the back of your hand. You will forget what you were doing, and then what's the point.
I really appreciate these long reviews. Real nostalgic, in depth, and fun to watch
According to Miyamoto, this is his least favourite Zelda game he worked on and considers it a failure because its development was very linear. With other games there would be new ideas constantly introduced and tested and the fact that his vision for the game from the start matched with the final product he considers this a failure. Suuure, caugh caugh, that's why. We believe you, Shigeru.
Your seriously calling him a liar? That's why Miyamoto says it's a failure
+Stefan B. and yet he approves skyward sword which from what i've heard is the most linear 3D zelda game...
Carl Bloke
Hindsight is 20/20. I'm saying it's possible he retroactively changed his mind on why Zelda II was for him personally a failure. Just like talos2233ify1 pointed out people were disappointed with Skyward Sword. Why would Shigeru not push for more innovations and try crazy ideas during the development of his games since he seems to have been doing that throughout his career and it's something that makes him such a good producer? And besides all the other Zelda 2D games afterwards followed the original game's gameplay and mechanics. So I don't think he's disappointed because the process of developing it was so linear and without surprises and crazy ideas, but rather because it just didn't feel like a Zelda game.
Stefan B. and is there any proof of that? miyamoto mproved on the mistakes from the past 2 games
Carl Bloke
Exactly my point. People make mistakes and hopefully learn from them. No shame in that. But what Miyamoto said was not that he made mistakes or that it was a bad game, but that the process of making it went so smoothly from start to finish and wasn't challenging that he considers the game a failure. It's like a writer planning to write a drama book and it's well received at the time and sells well and then saying he's disappointed in it because it didn't turn into a sci-fi urban fantasy drama with comedy elements during the writing process. So then it begs the question why wasn't the production process similar and him and his team brainstorming and testing different ideas like he used to? Maybe it was Nintendo who pushed him to redesign the gameplay after Super Mario Bros. 2 was seen as too similar to the original game. SMB2 was released in Japan in June 1986 and Zelda II in January 1987. I'm speculating of course, but it's more a plausible explanation than "it just was not challenging and too easy to develop".
I'm pretty sure that a strict-but-compassionate monk designed most of this game, and then a sadist offed him and designed the last part
the dark souls of the 80's :)
indeed, dark souls is more about saying "I'm so tough cause I play Dark Souls, the hardest game out there you know." than actually praising its mechanics ¬¬
dave rdz The majority of the Dark Souls fanbase would disagree with that statement. We don't like the game because of it's difficulty, but rather the mechanics that make it difficult.
the legend of zelda 2 of the XXI century
MarioTGP fuck, i couldn't beat Zelda II xD, but yes I agree with you ***** my bad, I must had said "SO FAR, people have told me they like Dark Souls cuase it´s hard to beat", I´m not saying it's a broken game, I rather think it´s kind of overrated
dave rdz If anything, I find the game slightly underrated. It's a game that has to be played with a blind run to really see how great it is. The world is sculpted in a way that, while looking stunning, feels fragmented at first. As you go through the game though you find how the world is actually very closely connected.
The combat encourages players to learn and make use of every tactic in order to win. You cannot simply go through the game tanking everything and pressing one button. It also encourages exploration, most of the best items in the game require you to search or try new things.
The story is also really interesting. Taking a very minimalist approach, it doesn't give you a clear idea of what to do. That means you're free to do what you want first which encouraged multiple playthroughs. The atmosphere also makes you feel alone in the world, with NPC's having very dark personalities as well.
But enough of me having an orgasm about this game, I'm starting to come off as pretentious lol. I'd definitely recommend a playthrough of the game if you haven't all ready. Watching an LP on CZcams does not do the game justice, and it must be played to be enjoyed.
Man this was released 10 years ago, still one of my favorite reviews
Good review! This game together with Castlevania III, is the embodiment of Tough but Fair, as opposed to Ghosts and Goblins-once I found out about the need to complete that one twice, I simply decided not to play it...
Johnny is easily one of the best CZcams video gamers! Always fun and entertaining videos.
I love this game.. When it comes to retrogaming it´s easy to beat the games you played as a kid because you often played harder then, had fewer games I guess. I finished this without even dying and that is my biggest feat in gaming I think. But if I were to start playing say Ghost n´Goblins I wouldn´t stand a chance since I didn´t play it as much as a kid, follow me? To me the first Zelda is way harder because the fact that I did only finish it once.
I think you're exactly right!
Excellent, excellent review. You took the words right out of my mouth regarding Zelda II. I share your sentiments and experiences. It's also the first Zelda game I've ever played and its difficulty is oddly satisfying despite being brutal. The fact that it's less ambiguous than its predecessor means that it has aged a lot better. I managed to go through the whole game without a full guide or any drawn maps on the GBA version a few years back, which I'm extremely proud of. I've been struggling for years to beat it, revisiting it a few times whenever a new version is released.
LOL THE KLU KLUX KLAN LOL! I'm in tears you made me laugh so hard
Have you ever noticed that the second installment in many game franchises have the tendency to be more intensely difficult than the first? Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels; Zelda II; Castlevania 2; Donkey Kong Country 2; Banjo-Tooie.
And this isn't just limited to Nintendo franchises. We also have: Jak II (which I barely finished and is honestly one of the hardest and most frustrating games I have ever played); Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (which I've never finished); Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back....
The list goes on.
+RyanX1231 Seems that way for older games. I've never really been into Nintendo franchises (I'm only now getting into Zelda), but I beat Jak II and Ratchet and Clank 2, both as a kid.
Jak II was nearly impossible for me, I finished Jak 3 first. On top of the tank insta-kills early on, the entire palace segment, fighting out of the water slums after getting Brutter's piece of Mar's Seal, Mar's tomb, that jetboard challenge in the docks and that damn Daxter Metal Head bashing minigame. I mean, the final boss was almost impossible, but my brother and I each had to hold half of the controller just so we could react correctly to that minigame the first time through. I swear, games like this give me muscle memory, because they're never so impossible the next times through. Oh, and that moving turret mission blowing up the Barons Eco supply ship had me stuck forever, and that assault on Old Haven to get to the Shadow's old home... A very hard game indeed.
Ratchet and Clank 2 on the other hand I didn't find nearly as hard throughout most of it. But I do remember the trauma those glider missions used to cause me. I died so many times. Now, like I said, muscle memory, but damn those were impossible. Now I play those things for funsies and am trying to max out my skill points for my PS3 Platinum. Benefits of growing up on a PS2, I guess.
Still need to get around to replaying the old Crash games, thanks for reminding me.
the Jak II final boss was a breath of fresh air at the end of the long, flooded tunnel.
fucking Krew was harder because of those goD DAMN ELECTRIC HOLOGRAMSA
frosty bite Meh, I thought Krew was alright because Scatter Gun OP. The entire factory leading up to him though... *shudders*. Still nice game design that they brought back the Scatter Gun, rather than just saying "This was a nice knockback weapon that's stronger than your outdated melee attacks, but now you have range, so RIP Scatter Gun."
Then again, I could never line up six hovercars and destroy them all in one shot of the Scatter Gun. Ah, I miss you Jak II Peace Maker.
frosty bite To beat both of those bosses, I take the Legend of Zelda approach to boss battles: Circle around the arena until I figure out what to do/notice an instance where they're not sending barrages of missiles and enemies toward my direction.
Mega man 2 was a lot easier than Mega Man 1
Even though this is the blacksheep of the series, it's actually the most important when you think about it. It introduced more diverse overworld rather than just grassland and mountain. It had magic meters and spells, towns, NPCs, and sidequests. All of the things this game brought to the table are so important, I honestly hesitate to wonder what the franchise would be like without it.
Wait...
Putting Gems into temples...
Sonic Unleashed did that...
OMG LINK IS SONIC
I would like to see a game where Link turns into a werewolf at night 🤣
One of my favorites in the series. People hate this game. But I think it’s just a lot of fun. It’s completely gameplay focused, so it’s just a good time.
Johnny, thanks to you, I had the desire to play this game. Just a few days ago, I completed it. Thank you so much for getting me to do that :D I really enjoyed it! (I surprisingly didn't have much difficulty until the last 2 dungeons… then again, I used guides and maps liberally)
Although its widely agreed upon that the original set the standard for the series, and that this game is the "black sheep" that was so different (and this is mostly true), people often overlook that this game really did establish the swordplay and sword combat that Link is famous for in the 3-D games. The original Zelda, A Link to the Past, and most of the handheld titles really don't have any of that dueling mechanic. When Ocarina and the Z targeting came into our homes, few people credited this game for kickstarting the back-and-forth fighting style that Link as a sword user has become since.
Was that Thunderbird fight an homage to AVGN?
Most likely. The Nerd is one of Johnny's biggest inspirations
That trick is actually common knowledge. And it makes the fight considerably easier
Yes, actually.
Yes
"This IS Castlevania!"
Zelda-vania
jdolaktv lol 😂
I think there were sidescrolling bits in Links Awakening. Just gonna point that out since you said they never approached sidescrolling again.
So glad I subbed to your channel just now. I love when I find a new channel with an awesome back catalogue of videos!
This is game reviewing at its best! I love how in-depth you go and even though i haven't played some of these games, these reviews make me feel like i have xD
Great job Johnny :D
Man oh man. So much bullshit, so many hardships, and this is seriously Lucahjin's favorite Zelda game? Either she can really exploit the game's mechanics to her advantage like a boss, or she's just really stubborn regardless of how much pain she has to suffer. Either way, I'd love to see her LP this one. She's likely to make it interesting, that's for sure.
Did lucahjin play this game?
She must have. She mentioned that it's her favorite Zelda game while confronting Fracktail in Super Paper Mario.
Nostalgia does wonders, but then again, it's not always the case. Some people take their time and get accustomed to hard games. I like Silver Surfer on the NES, for example. Beat it 2 days ago, and think it's one of the most underrated games on the console, if not of all time. It's nowhwere NEAR as difficult nor crap as people say it is. I blame AVGN for the game's undeserved, supposed opprobrium.
Alurine Melduene A game where you must take things one step at a time, I see... Sounds a lot like the classic Mega Man games (from what Johnny has said, anyway).
the ku kux klan LMAO glad Im not the only one who thought of that when he saw wizzrobes
Every time I watch your videos Johnny you always make me laugh and brighten up my day you're awesome
I appreciate the positive review (as opposed to all the other negative ones). It's actually one of my favorite games out there. I didn't say it was great, but just good enough for me.
You know if link dies by falling into the lava how do they retrieve his blood?
They should remake this game and make it possible
>possible
I've beaten this game before without using the cheap strategy to beat dark link. Super fun and yes, frustrating, but totally worth it. And I'm a Guitar Hero player with a background in nearly all Zelda games. 1st and 2nd are by far my favorites because of the sheer skill it takes to beat them.
+fyighfreak Are you Thad Jarvis? Dude, I'm honored!
Just kidding bro lol
Sean Cone Lmfao. xD
+Chaotic Cruelty It's git gud
+Dusty The Duck ^^^^
Can't believe I didn't see this or the other Zelda one earlier, great job as usual!
I'm just glad you didn't lie about the end on using the corner cheat for dark link. thank you for you're honesty ( :
Am I the only person who likes this game over Zelda 1? Zelda 1 is just so archaic and the combat sucks butt. Here, yes the game is hard as balls, but the combat is so much better. Plus, it's awesome to have increased skills.
Giordan Diodato Agreed. I personally couldn't stand the random AI movements. At least Zelda 2 has a good AI engine.
***** why?
***** it's not that unfair. At least compared to Lost Levels
No, you're not. I prefer Zelda 2 over Zelda 1 too!
Giordan Diodato I agree, I like Zelda 2 more than the first.
I always like to imagine this game as being the precursor of Shantae.
+PapaLuigi3000 how?
Shantae is more of a spiritual successor to Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest that fixes most of the issues. Seriously, I got major Castlevania 2 vibes from it.
darkstar100x The day and night cycles really gave me the Simons Quest vibes xp
Your reviews senor Juan Ortiz are excellent! Great and detailed. Keep up the nice work!
Great review!! Always enjoy your videos!
This game is still a sentimental favorite of mine. it's hard but not impossible.
Let's be honest. Without Zelda II , we wouldn't have Ocarina of Time nor any of the other future 3D Zelda titles.
9:43 "Sweet, an extra me!"
Johnny your reviews are awesome I can't stop watching them.
Cool video man, I enjoyed that :)
I went through the game again a couple of years ago having got it for free with the 3DS Ambassadors thingy, I really enjoyed playing it although I did use a walkthrough as I just wanted to play through it rather than challenge myself (although it was obviously still challenging in its own right)
I got to the Thunderbird having stocked up as many lives etc as I could and using the save state option but I died and I just can't bring myself to play through the last palace AND try to beat the Thunderbird once more, it is just too daunting a prospect!!!
This is my favorite zelda. I love the rpg elements, love the music, love the graphics and I love how its a sidesroller. Its aged way better than zelda 1 and its difficulty makes it addicting.
I think Johnny was ready to punch us on that last frame of the video.
Hurray! =D Another awesome review! thanks for your work! :)
great review...my thoughts exactly! great game hard as hell and takes patience in the last castle....
You know I find it really interesting that if you look at reviews of this game by a different people, they all seem to vary fairly wildly on how difficult it is.
Some people think it's insane, some people say hey it's not actually that bad, that's really interesting to me.
I can say the whole point of getting a game over really sucking well yeah it's supposed to suck it's supposed to add tension because you really really really don't want to die.
It always puzzles me when people get upset that dying or having a game over in a game sucks and I'm like well yeah it's game over... It's supposed to suck lol
I'm pretty sure that back in the day this would have been viewed totally differently because people played games differently back then.
Well I still play them that way, I'm always trying my best not to die because, well that adds tension.
Like right now I'm playing through Metroid prime one again but on hard. that tension starts to build when your health gets somewhat low and you haven't made it to the next save point yet, but then when you finally do make it there's a huge burst of excitement.
it goes back to that whole delayed satisfaction thing, psychologically it's the most rewarding because you actually had to work really hard for it.
but sometimes you don't make it, sometimes it sucks, but you can't have good times without bad times. And you learn from your mistakes.
I remember Arun from game grumps actually made a good point in his Castlevania video, basically pointing it out that playing the game realistically you wouldn't just go flying into some room full of creatures you would stop and think about it... And that's exactly what you have to do to be able to master the game.
You can't just go in willy-nilly, you got to stop, think, be strategic, etc.
They didn't want to stagnate the formula.
Oh the irony.
Johnny, you were wondering where the villagers were in the first game.. well they were there BUT if you remember that gauntlet in the mountain after the 2nd palace, (which is actually death mountain). The small area south of death mountain around where you get that hammer, if you look at the layout, it is the layout of the zelda 1 entire map area... so in perspective, zelda 2 is like 1000x bigger then zelda 1 in area traveled, and all the people in zelda 1 were north of death mountain.
It took me around the same amount of time to beat this game also, I played this game in the 1990's and got to the thunder bird but never beat him (i didnt try many times) but whenever i came back to the game, i started over and so forth.... finally a year or 2 ago, i was determined to beat the only zelda game that i never beat.... It was so satisfying to beat the game after so long. It took nearly 15-20 years but i did it.... freaking hard ass game...... Oh btw
This was an amazing review Johnny I'm glad you were able to beat this beast of a game. I've never got past the first dungeon but I still think this is better than Zelda 1. Anyway great video and can 't wait for link to the past it's my 3rd favorite in the whole series :D
im almost positive that the adventure time game were easier version of this
I actually really enjoyed this game because of it's difficulty. You feel like you're really accomplishing something when you beat a palace
love these vids~
I must say though, very good, in-depth review. Only part I think you missed was mentioning the upward & downward thrust.
Zelda 2 and castlevania 3 are my fav games on nes WHY because they are hard and went you beat the game you feel good
uggh damnit, I kinda agree with you one of the games that I keep replaying no matter how hard it is is megaman & bass which I keep replaying because playing with bass is still soo AWESOME, double jumps, dash jumps, 7 direction shooting FTW
i prefer this to the 1st zelda.... i duno why i just find this game more fun... like john said there is just something about it
Me too.
I used to not even like the first one as a kid since I hated RPG games back then.
Not the case now, but Zelda II for me is still better in my opinion.
yea zelda 1 i like aswell cause i like to explore but can be confusing what to buy and confusing on walls tobomb to new players
te dungeons were fun to explore tho
i am having a funtime with zelda 2
Johnny, you are hilarious, man! Thanks for this review, it was really funny to listen to. I just finished this game about a month ago, never having played it before, and fully commiserate with your experience. I'm a "classic" gamer since the 90's, but damn this was harder than anything I've ever played. I think I find Mario games easier because Mario can actually stomp on the damn goombas...most enemies, in fact. Link can't touch anything unless he slashes with his sword.
I might preffer this to the first Zelda.
can u review super Mario sunshine and super Mario 4?
He will
He just did.
i know
Why do people call this a bad game?
Everyone knows it's Skyward Sword that's the bad Zelda game.
Skyward Sword isn't that bad. It's just a bit of a downgrade from Twilight Princess and Wind Waker and people were expecting something that would surpass both those games with Skyward. It suffered from overhype and when it did not meet the "perfect" standards that the people wanted they whined about it. Doesn't make it a bad game though. I enjoyed it despite it's flaws. The only real problem with the game was the lack of things to explore. The game followed a very point A to point B style and while the mechanics were interesting and made the game a very fun experience for me the confined areas made me kind of wish that I could just go out and explore a more expansive world. The only open areas in that game really were the central areas of the 3 main regions you explore. Faron Woods, Eldin Volcano, and Lanayru Desert but even then they were pretty small compared to the vast Great Sea or Hyrule Field in Twilight Princess which was so big it's practically split into several sections. As for this game. I think it's just hated because it's "different" and people don't like it when games try different things from the norm whether they are good or not. I enjoyed Adventure of Link and it is by far the more superior of the 2 NES titles. There are less cryptic secrets, enemies are more challenging and intelligent forcing you to be on your toes, there is more variety in terrain, more enemy variety, bosses that actually feel like boss fights and actual towns with people to talk to plus different spells Link can use. I really can't name a truly bad Zelda game because to me they are all at least decent to groundbreaking masterpieces. Unless you want to go to those 3 disgusting travesties for the CD-I. We can all agree those were trash but outside of those not a truly terrible Zelda game.
I get that non-linearity is a staple with franchises like Zelda and Metroid, but why would you consider linearity a bad thing? (Same goes for 3d (and 2d) Sonic games as well as 64 and Sunshine)
warioland523 from what your saying it looks like the main reason behind skyward sword was they wanted to make a game that was fun but not incredibly expansive like ocarina, twilight princess or wind waker. maybe they were going for something in terms of majoras mask where it was a little more condensed.
junior D.
Exactly. I also think that despite initial negative reception people will look back at Skyward much like they did with Majora's Mask and respect it as the good game it truly is. It's a cycle really. Game comes out people hate it but then they look back because they then hate the next game that comes out and respect the previous game. It's called the Zelda Cycle. I went into Skyward with no extreme expectations like most people. I just wanted to play a good game and to me any Zelda game is good by my standards since each adventure is something new and fun as it's own idea so naturally when I played Skyward I admired it for what it was which was a unique and creative game with fun combat and puzzle elements and I enjoyed it for that despite it's rather confined overworld.
*cough* *Zelda cdi* *cough*
Your chair/sofa is awesome!
This is one of the greatest Zelda games. Although its brutally difficult. Its still beatable! With a great sense of accomplishment. It has enough elements of the original to not get it confused with any other franchise. Plus the soundtrack is kick ass! Although its hard to recommend this to a Zelda fan. Its a terrific stand alone title on the NES. And one of the best games to be released on the console
Doesnt virtual console have save states?
Kind of, but its really just a quick-save more than a save state.
Mud Kip yeah i guess your right because its only 1 save
OrangeSteelStudios Well at least the 3DS & Wii U does
The Wii U one does, but not the Wii one, he's using the Wii VC.

I just started playing through this game today, and so far, I think that, while yes it is a little too difficult, it is pretty fun!
It is so sad this game wasn't made on the SNES. When you learn about its history, there were more features they wanted to incorporate. The 8 levels for power, defense and magic was supposed to be 16. The whole game was supposed to be about the transition between overview map and platform. And that's the bare minimum they achieved. They intended to add a ton more but couldn't due to the 8-bit restrictions.
THIS is the original Dark Souls.
I really don't agree with you on the difficulty. I completed this game at the tender age of 10 or 11, and I am not nor was I an amazing gamer by any stretch of the imagination. Also, to me this is one of the best Zelda games. ranking just below "A link to the past". That could, of course, be due to nostalgic reasons, but I still thoroughly enjoy this game and I tend to complete it once every other year or so.
How in the Jesus fuck?
***** My top 5 Are
1:TP
2:Mm
3:OoT
4:NESLOZ
5:NESLOZ2
4 and 5 being not so favorite.
1-3 are my top favorite, my "Triforce" of Zelda games.
Huh. Your Triforce of Zelda games are just like mine, except Majora and Ocarina are 1 and 2 for me.
onesonicguy Well, I don't disagree at all, Twilight Princess, is my favorite. MM being my second because of the game mechanics, level design, the whole time schedules thing is pretty cool. Loz OOT is my third, but i grew up with that one. The game OOT started my love of Zelda. Twilight Princess was something new at the time for me. Just the whole Wolf Form, teleporting and other mechanics fascinated me. The cut-scenes, although as usual, no dialogue from Link, was Amazing.
Some scenes nearly had me crying to be honest. The bosses in TP were, albeit sometimes disturbing, complicated, challenging and fun. The dungeons were good in length. Good in the amount of complication, albeit some too complicating (F*ck water Temple in any LOZ.). That water temple tho. Nintendo has a horrible knack for making water temples difficult. Someone in there REALLY loves making those difficult. The final battle with Ganon, All forms, was amazing.
It was satisfying stabbing Ganon for what appeared to be the final Time in the LOZ franchise. Of course Nintendo would not have that.
Tyler Amacker While I like Twilight Princess, I don't think it was to the point where I started to get emotional. And yeah, I love the final battle, I just wish that other games did that as well instead of giant Gannon or needing a particular type of arrow to beat him.
Great review John.
I am actually quite pleased that you're not disappointed that much with Zelda so far. You had complaints for this one (difficulty), but you said it also gave a good time and was a fair difficulty (partially). Since LttP is aclaimed to be a 2D Zelda to master the 2D gamestyle, I am excited to see how you manage to "combat" it, Johnny.
Don't you hate it when your going to save a princess but then stopped by the KKK?
Fuck you Link, we'll kill all the Kokori !
Zelda 2: Best one.
Are there modern versions of the ost themes in this game? I know almost all the music from 1 and alttp have modern renditions.
I love this game. I used to rent it when I was a little kid and I had no idea what to do. It was really awesome to come back to it as an adult and beat it.
OK, OK, OK, lemme straighten things out.
Two words:
This is not a hard game.
I said it. Whatcha gonna do about it? :P
No, but I'm serious. When I heard people say Death Mountain was the hardest part of the game, I believed it at first. The first time playing the game, it took me around 10 minutes to find my way through Death Mountain, and I said, "If that's as hard as it gets, this must be a really easy game!" And I was right. I had more trouble with Wind Waker's Triforce-finding quest ALONE than Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The dungeons, overworld, Death Mountain, and everything else are all easy to navigate. There is nothing overly difficult about the game.
It has been said. Peace out.
To be honest, I find the orignal Mario Bros. harder than Zelda two. But that's my opinion.
You just lowered my self-esteem
You are a weird as shit case (maybe you suck in 3D gaming yet are a genius at 2D gaming?)
No offense intended, is just that as tedious as finding the shards in Wind Waker is, it's certainly easier and more intuitive. Maybe more time consuming, but certainly more intuitive and easier(the timing isn't as tight and the punishment for screwing up isn't as high because the damage you get it's small). So that being said, it's just borderline alien that a game that objectively speaking has tighter timing, stupidly higher punishment for screwing up(not only considerably higher damage but also knockback that can lead to cheap deaths) and much more crap going on the screen while having unintuitive game design is found EASIER than a game that is designed to be fairly easy most of the time.
I'm going to be completely honest now. I still haven't beaten it, but maybe it sounded like I was implying I have. You see, I ordered the original NES version online just… 16 days ago, according to my math. I've been doing a solo playthrough. You know, no guides, walkthroughs, cheats, help online, or even help from friends. So I've had it for a little more than two weeks, and two days ago, I reached the Thunderbird. I'm sure I'll get past it no time, after leveling up some more.
Oh meh geh I literally just beat it it was so awesome
Quit making comments about dark souls. There are other games on the NES that are 20 times harder than that
Red Who could you please name one BESIDES Mario lost levels, Castlevania, and Ghosts and Goblins?
chaoticsonic 456 Ninja Gaiden?
***** I forgot that game was around, good answer.
Battletoads, silver surfer, and TMNT
And contra
Underrated classic. This one’s my favorite
ohmyGod your health when dark link hit you. LUCKY. love your reviews
This is one of my favorite reviews.
One of my favorite Zelda games. Just wish I knew about the strategy guides when I first beat it.
Some people might not like the change in perspective, but if you give it a chance you will find it challenging, rewarding and fun.
I quite enjoyed 2. It's very difficult but it's definitely beatable, which is enough for me.
I've only beaten it twice but hell I like going back to it now and then.
Some of the tunes are brilliant. (The title screen getting special mention)
