They did have an intermission back when it was originally released. The film was meant to evoke the feeling of being in a concert hall not just with the classical music being matched with the animation but also the way the whole film was structured.

Besides in those days you'd usually get two intermissions when you went to the movies - first one after the newsreel, the cartoon, and the short film, and the second one halfway through the movie.

Fun fact: Chernabog (the Devil-like demon) was originally posed by Bela Lugosi, the guy who played Dracula, but head animator of the segment Bill Tytla (who animated Stromboli in Pinocchio and the title character of Dumbo) wasn't happy with his movements, so he asked Disney director Wilfred Jackson to pose for him shirtless and used those for Chernabog.

It goes without saying that this is Walt Disney's masterpiece in every sense of the word. I love each and every segment of Fantastia. Though if I had to choose my favorite, it would easily be A Night On Bald Mountain & Ave Maria. They go so well hand in hand with one another. It's easily one of the most powerful, emotional and just all around perfect things ever made.
Edit: The reason I feel like it just ends the way it does is bc they knew how powerful this was and when it originally came out, it got a standing ovation. Keep in mind that this film came out just at the start of WWll

I'm surprised you didn't enjoy "The dance of the hours", it's one of my favorite segments, I like the hippo and crocodile's interactions. I feel like the whole joke of the segment is that they set it up as one of the most famous ballet songs and get you ready and pumped for another epic piece only for them to reveal that all the performers are silly looking animals who have to awkwardly get around their strange shapes in order to preform the proper movements. I guess it's neat to see just how different it, and by extension every other segment, is compared to the rest.

Nya, exactly. The intention of this segment, in addition to being fun, was always to make fun of the snobbery that existed at the time regarding ballet. In fact, plans for Fantasia sequels that were never made (until Fantasia 2000, of course) included new ballet parodies, most prominently one starring babies and storks.
PS: Although Fantasia 3 AKA "Fantasia 2006" has never existed as such, the segments that compose it up do exist and were released separately: One by one (Freedom song by Lebo M.), The little matchgirl (String Quartet No 2 in D Major by Alexander Borodin), Destino (Destino by Armando Domínguez and Dora Luz) and Lorenzo (Bordoneo y 900 by Juan José Mosalini).

The “Night on Bald Mountain” sequence made me a goth kid hahahaha! I also loved the Pegasus & centaur section as a kid, and my old VHS tape did not have the racist caricature in it so I guess it was called out before then. As for the zebra centaurs, I always assumed they were meant to be African centaurs since Zebras are from Africa… my kid mind didn’t put together the decision to include them as racist but I can see that now as an adult. It doesn’t make sense to include them as African representation if it’s supposed to be Ancient Greece so yes, the animators unfortunately thought servant = Black women… sigh 😞

Fun facts(all connected to rite of spring)
1st:depiction of drought killing the dinosaurs was more frequent back then before theory about asteroids and meteors that came in the 80s
2nd:don bluth was so fascinated that he wanted to make his own version of this segment but first off he had plan of making bambi but as dinosaur version, and he probably remembered this scene. Maybe thats why sharptooth looks more infamous than one we saw here. And uniting bambi and this made land before time
3dh:Walt wanted to make this scene abt evolution of humans but for some reasons they changed that to dinosaurs
4th:some dinosaurs didnt lived in exact period, like stegosaurus lived in late jurrasic, along with brontosaurus, while trex lived in late cretateous along with triceratops, and for dimentrodons they lived WAY BACK in paleozoic. Beacuse people tough they are also dinosaurs, but they are actualy related to mammals, including us
5th:everyone tough trex we saw was allosaurus or gigantosaurus or acrocanthosaurus. Actualy it was indeed trex. The reason why this one had three instead of two is beacuse fantasia was made in time when trex was still being discovered. Then later it was found out trex had 2

"Fantasia" was the movie that taught me the value of seeing movies in the theater (rather than watching at home on a television). 'Fantasia" was re-released in theaters at least two or three times when I was growing up (in the 70's and 80's). So, I had seen (and loved) it a few times. Around the early 80's you started to be able to rent movies on VHS to watch at home. Let me tell you, 'Fantasia' on a 19" TV with lousy speakers is NOT the same movie at all. I don't just mean it's not as good, I mean it's a completely different experience. At least nowadays we've got larger high definition TV's and decent stereo or surround speakers. But still something like 'Fantasia' is best seen in a theater (I wish they'd re-release it to theaters again!)

  • @AdamFishkin
    @AdamFishkin Před 2 lety +8

It's always such fun sharing the experience of a more free-form film like "Fantasia", although to me the first half is stronger than the second. You can tell that by 1940 the animators had rocketed miles above what they were capable of on "Snow White" just three years earlier. Art Babbitt (the guy who animated the thistles doing the Russian dance) used to host anatomy-study sessions for his coworkers to keep polishing their craft. Unfortunately he clashed with Walt over the condescending way animators were treated, and six months after "Fantasia" premiered, Babbitt led a staff strike which (because of Walt's anger) cost him his job.
Woolie Reitherman (the guy who animated the stegosaurus/t-rex fight) gained a reputation from that for action scenes. After he directed the "Sleeping Beauty" scene where Philip fights the dragon, Walt decided to hand him command of the entire animation department from the 60s onward. The irony is that the 60s/70s era at Disney was known for very cheap animation standards.

I can't believe this is your first time! I watched this constantly starting as a 3 year old or less. Absolute artistic masterpiece. And meh, the racist caricature wasn't that bad. I thought it was a cute character as a kid instead of thinking about race. I don't think you should change original art imho. There were some "indecent scenes" as well, which is why there was a repeating shot or two. Again why original art should not be messed with. History should be left as is and not censored.
They censored Da Vinci's original work, painting over it. Not cool. Also, during the Victorian era, many paintings were painted over to make things more pretty. Also not cool, relatable to censorship. Main point: censorship is bad. What's next, forget about Hitler because it offends? It's important to know rather than rewrite. /end rant.
As a side note, my favorite parts were space/creation of the earth/dinosaurs, and bald mountain. The fairy stuff in the beginning was really good too.

I watched some of this video a long time ago, but there's been one part that's stayed in my head rent-free and I need to address it. At 6:14, you actually had to look up on google what your appropriate thoughts and emotions should be. You were confronted by imagery that probably wouldn't fly in today's media, and rather than giving it an honest appraisal, _you needed to consult with party dogma to be told what to think and how to think._ This often creeps in my head multiple times a week; when I'm microwaving food, when I'm pumping gas, when I'm lathering up the loofah: "This young lady actually googled what her reaction needed to be."
Respectfully, I'm not trying to bait you, or trigger you, or build a trap to snare you with your own words, or politicize this, or turn the comments section into a shit-show; I'm so sick of all those. I'm just waving my hand from a crowd in an auditorium and saying politely, "If you're going to let others do your thinking for you, be careful who you hire for the job."

I found this video hard to watch for the same reason you cite. But 6:14 isn't the only place where her social conditioning visibly kicks in. What makes it so repulsive is the Pavlovian and predictable nature of her responses. Someone should be paying royalties to the ghost of George Orwell, and I'm not just being glib - this real-life illustration of his allegories is genuinely upsetting.
9:05 So mushrooms imitating traditional Chinese garb is RACIST, but thistles and tulips in the form of Russian, i.e. European, folk costumes are perfectly OK (as they should be). I do smell some racialism here, but it's not coming from where this girl rather smugly thinks it is...

@@paintedjaguar I must not have stuck around for that, but those are good observations. Quite the thorny issue, ho ho! At this point I'm beyond aggravated when the R-word gets busted out. Conversations get sidetracked and people hunker down as battlefield lines are drawn out. If we can't *not* see race, maybe we can just all move along without the need to observe it.

Just enjoy The Visuals, The Music is so you don't get bored, Besides The Original Title was The Concert Feature. Don't worry about The Music unless you Like it, The Main Focus is The Art, such as Lighting and other Visuals. A good film to cut your teeth on when it Comes to The Nutcracker is Nutcracker Fantasy (1979), And Follow it with The Nutcracker Prince (1990). Fred Moore Designed The Fairies and Centaurettes. The word you were looking for was Stamen (Stay Men), But you were close. The fish were like Arabian Women doing a Vale Dance. The Flowers are Thistles and Orchids. Yes Autumn and Winter ends The Nutcracker Suite. The Snowflakes are a Tutu, But you got the Idea. No, The Last sequence is Night on Bald Mountain followed by The Best version of Ave Maria put on screen. Originally they were gonna use Dopey from the 7 Dwarfs, But Settled on Mickey Mouse, because of the Disney Trademark. The Black and White was Intentional, It's because Mickey Mouse usually isn't Violent, Ant this was the first Time we see a Violent Mickey. The Sorcerer's Name is Yensid, Which is Disney Backwards, so you get 2 Disney's for the price of 1. Which one of you is Petrie, FYI Petrie was voiced by Will Ryan, The same guy that voiced The seahorse in The Little Mermaid (1989). Yeah but in "The Right of Spring" Segment You don't see it coming, So the death takes you by surprise. 3 Horn, and Long Neck are acceptable here. There are 14 films to The Land Before Time, I see you, Switching it up like that. And then Sharp Tooth Spoils The Party. Yes in theaters it's a 15 Minute Intermission, but for you it's more like 15 Seconds, and The Only thing you get for credits, because Deems Taylor as the MC tells you who worked on Fantasia. Yeah 40's Audiences were use to 1h to 1h 30m. Now audiences want Vertical 1m shorts, Why am I here? Because I break The Mold. The Pastoral is Pastel. This was the first time People saw Pegasus Flying. Black Colt: CANON BALL! Fantasia was rated G, Because of the Cartoons are for Kids mentality, But if it were today, Fantasia would be rated PG, or R. Sunflower is cut out of your version But The Centaurette using the Cattails as an Nail File has The Black Centaurette with Corn Rolls Cropped out, just search Sunflower in Fantasia. Yeah I got nothing, Maybe The Plant was moving because of Sunflower. They Call him Bacchus in the film, But both are correct, it's Dionysus Bacchus, And Zeus needs to be a party pooper, He wasn't invited. FREE THE NIPPLE! Dance Of The Hours is set to the tune of Hello Muddah Hello Faddah. The Elephants were Blown away like the Nanny's in Marry Poppins, But they'll be back. In Fantasia Satan is Chernabog, Yes there are people who have nightmares about The Bald Mountain Sequence, Mainly because of Chernabog and his Minions. And here come the Catholics to Celebrate All Saints Day, November 1st. Ave Maria is to decompress the Audience, Now get in your car and Go Home, It's over.

a few notes about the music: most of the orchestrations were "touched up" to add additional emphasis and drama where the filmmakers felt it was needed. the "rite of spring" (dinosaurs segment) was probably the most heavily altered, both in orchestration and rearrangement of the sequence of dance episodes in the original ballet, not to mention the cutting of episodes in the score, to make it suit the narrative that the filmmakers wanted to present. the orchestral arrangement of the "toccata and fugue" was stokowsk's own famous orchestration of the original j s bach organ work.

This was the first movie my parents took me to the theater to see when I was about 7yo. (1960) In so many ways, it was truly a "life changing" experience (even though I didn't know it at the time). It planted the first seed of two lifelong interests....1) science (evolution of life on earth) and 2) opened my young mind to the music beyond just the pop music of the day. Obviously, the amount of hand -drawn animation in the film was and is mind blowing, but I didn't appreciate that aspect until I was much older.

Depicting Black themed animals as Black..... isn't racist. It's simply accurate.
If they had chickens or dogs that were based off Vikings, and they made them Blonde and blue eyed you wouldnt' consider that "racist".
If they had an Irish themed section, and made red-headed charicatures doing Irish tap dance.... you wouldn't call that "racist".

It wasn't the norm for movies to have intermissions then, but it wasn't unheard-of, especially for movies that were either unusually long (like Gone with the Wind) or "artistically prestigious" like Fantasia. Also, it was initially shown in only selected theaters in big cities, ones that could handle the very early stereo sound, so it was an "event" like going to a play. In later reissues to theaters (once a decade or thereabouts), the intermission was eliminated and the narration shortened, so it could be shown in regular theaters more times per day. (When they wanted to restore it for DVD, it was quite a job assembling all the original elements.)

As to the first piece of animation, I have chromesthesia (a kind of synesthesia, where color and sound are connected for me) and that musical sequence is similar to what goes on in my mind’s eye when I listen to music. Although different notes of different instruments are different shades of color, so at 4:03 instead of just one red, the lines would vary depending on frequency, usually with lighter being higher, but sometimes being more orange if higher and a bluer hue in the lower register.
Now that I’ve actually seen this, I want to show it to my husband; I’ve always tried to describe it for him and it’s very difficult to get across. The movie Ratatouille kind of had a segment like it with flavors and colors as well, but it’s not as accurate as this because it’s not chromesthesia, although it’s still a form of synesthesia.
