    There are Bible-based liberal Christians, and there are Bible -based conservative Christians. Both sides have their phonies. The problem is we define ourselves more by our political views than we do by our identity in Christ. Our political views have therefore become our idol.

    • @Metal_Auditor
      @Metal_Auditor Před 6 lety +18

      The terms "liberal" and "conservative" as used in this video are not being use in the political sense (though they are somewhat related, as the bit about politics pointed out). This video is about liberal and conservative approaches to Christian tradition, with liberals being those who seek to break free of traditions and conservatives being those who cling to them.
      It's still not the way I would tend to use the terms with respect to Christianity. To me (and I think this is the most historically grounded way of thinking about it), liberal Christianity seeks to hang on to some semblance of the Christian faith while subjecting the Bible to the reasoning of men (higher criticism, and the like), while conservative Christianity affirms that the Bible is the sole infallible record of God's revelation to man and provides the standard against which all our thoughts should be measured.

      @@Metal_Auditor yup. Pretty much. I'm learning so much from the liberal side right now, and they actually are very drawn to liturgy and more old fashioned faith practices. It's really calming actually. It's not "Hypey". It's more grounding. "Son of a preacher man" Podcast kind of blends the two.

    • @Metal_Auditor
      @Metal_Auditor Před 4 lety +1

      @@lauraberg6272 I think that those high church liturgies are medieval developments, beginning after the establishment of Christianity as the official religion of Rome. Those practices are probably foreign to the early Church. The modern draw toward high liturgies in more liberal churches seems to be an attempt to add substance to the worship services to replace the substance has been removed from the preaching.

      @lauraberg6272 Před 4 lety +3

      @@Metal_Auditor Can't overgeneralize that sort of thing. Lots of things out there. It doesn't mean everything from the Middle Ages was in error. Just maybe different from some folks preferences. A lot of folks are moving away from that Roman/Greek view of who Jesus was and going back to what he preached about which was the kingdom of God. "Son of a preacher" man podcast is a good one to learn about that new focus.

He destroyed tha entire world because of tha actions of some people he didn't like. He killed 1st born babies indiscriminately. Plagues. Jealousy. Rage. Wrath. He creates people knowing they don't have enough faith (because he created them) and then abandons them on earth and then punishes them eternally for being exactly what he created them to be. This is all in your good book. If that god truly exists, he is unworthy of worship. He's a sadist. He's a deadbeat father and a terrible, jealous, angry creator. Basically, he's a huge dick. • @campomambo
      @campomambo Před 6 lety +3

      Sam Vodopianov - Самуил Водопьянов actually, Christians are more divided along the lines of conservative/liberal than by denomination. This trend has been growing ever since ww2. A conservative Presbyterian generally gets along better with a conservative Baptist than with a fellow Presbyterian who is liberal in their Christianity.

    • @matthanlewis1959
      @matthanlewis1959 Před 6 lety +4

      The question shouldn't be, why some have extra books, it should be why some have taken out books. This is due to protestants taking out 7 books from the old testament. I believe Martin Luther was the first one to do this. All catholic Bibles are "required" to have all of the original bible books in the newly printed bibles. Because Catholics have all the books, i believe Catholics should be the ones that have sole authority on the bible.

      While it is good and funny (at times), and some things are in a narrow sense accurate, there´s missing a lot of variety and reason why they differ. One could say the same about soccer... there are fans, and there are huligans, while both"love" soccer and have stuff in common, it´s a huge difference between the groups, and also INSIDE the groups. Agreeing to what +Granger Montag said... you can´t just say both Christian groups are "equally" bad, as little as you can say both soccer fans and huligans are "equally bad".

      Myriah Grabish well, I'm not sure that any single answer could explain it. Just continue reading your Bible and comparing your choices to it, and find some good authors who have been Christian for a long time and consider their point of view on topics that divide liberals and conservatives. Some topics just serve to cause arguments, while others are important and need to be defended. I would recommend Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, as it deals with a lot of fundamentals, but it's up to you. Sorry that was long, hope it helped!

      I think that over catagorizing this just divides. Chances are you lie somewhere on one side of the line, but I think trying to label exactly where your beliefs fall can keep you from actively seeking truth and focuses on trying to fit a mold. Obviously both sides have good and bad points, so likely somewhere in between is best, but there are so many ways to be in between both extremes.

      I don't understand the mentality that church has to be boring. I believe we can be entertained in church, because the Lord has given us joy, and he wants us to delight in him. However, church shouldn't be some fun and preppy club either. I think people need to find a church that they find engaging. My relationship with God has grown so much since my parents moved our family to a church where I am engaged. Before, I found church so boring that I went home every Sunday feeling guilty, like I wasn't a good Christian and I was going to hell since I couldn't focus anymore. At my current church I'm engaged and thus I listen at the sermons to the point where I actually enjoy them. I take notes on them, I go home, and reflect on the message and examine myself to see how I can implement the message in my life. People don't, and they won't fall in love with Jesus if they think church is a boring place where there are a bunch of rules they have to follow. We want to tell the world about Jesus, and I think it's engagement that causes people to want to follow Jesus. Anyway, it isn't even about 'church.' The real issue is if my relationship with God is built on how I feel (bored or not), or if I love him. Church can be fun, and it is that fun that kick starts our relationship with God, in my opinion.

It doesn't want to tear one group of people down while worshipping another. It strives to bring a little clarity and honesty and fairness to a lot of divisive and tumultuous conversations and remind all of us that even the people we disagree with are human beings with intrinsic value as creations of God. Thank you guys for being who you are.

    I've grown up going to church with a high level of involvement, my dad being an elder and my mama teaching Sunday school ever since I can remember. It's taken a while for me to come to understand how important it is to challenge current practice against God's word to see if it measures up. I respect and admire my dad so much, and he has always quoted Ephesians when talking about other denominations and branches. "But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ." Truth and sound doctrine are so important to an authentic faith, but so is love and gentleness.

    I totally agree with Jordan, but I am a conservative Christian. I think the Bible is 100% correct whether or not it agrees with my lifestyle, it just means I need to change. We need to make the Bible the basis for our lives.

    • @EmethMatthew
      @EmethMatthew Před 6 lety +30

      But what does the Bible say about your lifestyle? That's where each side tends to only pay attention to the parts that agree with them and explain away the parts that don't.
      Homosexuality? Immigrants? Pacifism? Charity? Alcohol? One side is like "The Bible clearly says this!" and the other side is all, "Sure, but it probably means this..." Or better yet, one side is like, "It clearly says this here!" and the other side is like, "But that doesn't count because it clearly says this here!" Which side is right? Often that depends on which "subculture" you've decided on identifying with...
      I'm taking the video's point to be that if we're really trying to follow the Bible and not just get it to agree with our particular subculture, we should be thoughtfully and humbly analyzing whether we might be wrong and ignoring something important God is telling us, instead of assuming we're right to start with and picking the path that confirms our bias.

      EmethMatthew Exactly...

    • @j.a.greene3523
      @j.a.greene3523 Před 6 lety +10

      The Westboro Baptist Church thinks they're following the Bible 100% and feel that people need to change to adapt to the Bible, not vise versa. Be careful with that mentality... because what makes you any different than the WBC?
      If we can find one person who truly lives the Word with 100% accuracy, we can find the "good" that they do compared to everyone else who doesn't follow the Bible 100%. However, since such account cannot be found, then we can label certain things in the Bible as "impractical" (which many Christians say about the Old Testament). The question becomes... what about the Bible can accurately be called "impractical"? When St. Paul talks about how to treat your slaves? Also, what about the things that are currently practical that are never mentioned, or vaguely mentioned in the Bible... like EmethMatthew pointed out. However, if there's the fear that "If we can find one thing that's impractical about the Bible, then why can't we say that the whole Bible is impractical?" Then you get to the first issue asking the question "Then where's the person who is able to prove that the Bible is 100% practical? If it's possible, then why has no one been able to do it in the last 2,000 years?"
      Although I admit, just because no one has done it, doesn't mean it's impossible, but we're asking the question of whether or not the Bible is "practical". Practical means that it can be applied to most everyday people in a near every day way. We may not know fully how a car works, or a cell phone, but both are practical in our everyday living... all you need to know is how to drive a car or work a cell phone, not necessarily the intricate mechanics that go with it. So, if someone were to even argue that the Bible is 100% practical, does the Bible have to be fully understood in order for it to be 100% practical? And if that was the case, then is studying the Bible necessary for it to apply to the person on an every day basis? Or is the case where it's just "good" to know the Bible, even though it's not that practical on some parts? In that case, why learn about something if it's not really going to have any practical application in your life? Or even so, why does it have to be exclusively the Bible? Why can't it be the Quran, or the Torah, or a book about Buddha, or any of the stories from ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian time? Can many of the "practical lessons" in the Bible be also found in other sources and religions?
      My conclusion: The Bible, although there are good life lessons to be found it in, but it's not that much different than any other religious text or doctrines. In fact, much of Christianity borrows from Judaism, Paganism, along with a mix of ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology (you think God becoming man and 'rising from the dead' is unique to Christianity? Pharaoh was considered both human and divine, and when he would die, they would mummify him instead of bury him, so that he could return to his body once he came back from the land of the dead...). To believe that the Bible is 100% true is similar to believing that the movie The Godfather is 100% accurate, or that books The Lord of the Rings is 100% accurate... or that every self-help book ever written is 100% practical because it says so. Not only that, but what makes the Bible elevated above the Quran or the Torah? Not a single word in the Bible was written by Jesus himself... mostly told by secondhand eyewitnesses (of all the Gospel writers, John was the only one who was considered an "Apostle" of Christ), who waited years after the events to record their "testimony", but yet, most of the Quran was written by the prophet Mohammad, and the Torah were written by the prophets themselves (or had scribes to write for them), which gives those other "accounts" more credibility. If this was a court case, and you had one eyewitness say "I saw it happen yesterday" versus "I talked to people who saw it happen" or "I saw it happen, but it was years ago", which would be more credible? The Bible, literally, is a collection of stories and letters... I don't think ever had the intention of being the sole basis and even foundation of a "religion" that is full of corruption and manipulation and confusion.
      As the Bible says: "A kingdom divided against itself, cannot stand on its own" and "God is not the author of confusion". If both are true, then why is there so much division and confusion in the one true religion that was, allegedly, founded by God? In my opinion... if you start to work the numbers, both on Christianity and the Bible... things find to not add up.

      J. A. Greene the difference is that the WBC purposefully ignore parts that don't go along with their narrative. True conservative Christians like myself, the OP, and most other conservative Christians believe that every part of the Bible is important and we should live our lives according to the whole truth. So, yes we try our best to conform our lifestyle to the Bible, the whole counsel of God. If you can point to a place we are lacking we will self-reflect, pray on it, and ask God to help us become more like Him.
      I think what most people mistake with conservative Christians is that they think we believe we are living in line with Bible now. The truth is that we do not. We understand that we are just human and are continually trying to improve ourselves and grow more into the righteousness of God. Living a lifestyle in line with the Bible is a process not a decision.

    I disagree. We should let the bible lead our lives because it is literally straight from God, and if you're a Christian you have asked HIM TO LEAD your life. That being said the bible is our biggest tool. We should not twist it to our specific needs but let it show us the way God wants us to go. If you have asked Jesus to come into your heart and lead you, it won't be so that you can manipulate the bible.

    Great video. The terms “liberal” and “conservative,” when used of Christianity, are often overly simplistic. For example, I often consider myself “conservative” when it comes to theology, but “liberal” when it comes to politics. And then there’s the way those terms are used to refer to certain moral and/or social behaviors or worship styles. The terms can be used in so many different ways and contexts, and people who use those terms don’t always distinguish between theology, politics, ethics, etc. Everything often gets jumbled together and one side misrepresents the other.

In fact, most choose not to swear around people who they know are uncomfortable with it. It's one of those things that really the bible has nothing to say about (because the idea of "bad words" didn't exist back then) so we know it's fine, but we don't want to cause others to stumble, so we refrain around some people.... but we're not perfect, we sometimes slip :)

How I always interpreted it ( and, again, this is just my opinion ) is that we aren't supposed to say 'bad words', intentionally use our words to offend other people, and that sort of thing. And, as just a rule in general for me, there are many words that aren't necessarily swears, but aren't as 'classy' or 'sophisticated'. They are unnecessary slang, if that makes sense. I have made a conscious choice to try and not use these words, but that is, again, just me. I can force my choices and my beliefs onto others. Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in.

      Susanna Biddinger That only accounts for a small number of swears, and also covers far more than using His name AS a swear. Like using His name to further your own agenda for instance, is also covered by this commandment.

      FamilyCraft Dad ephesians 4:29
      "Let no corrupt communications proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." And there are also many more like "James 5:12"
      Which states " but above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath, but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.'' And there are so many others.

      Ephesians 4:29 means to not tear down someone with your words. Yeah you can use swear words to tear someone down, but you can use many other words as well... so that says nothing about "swearing" as people quite frequently use swear words in normal conversation, some even use those words to encourage one another, or rather "edify" them.
      James 5:12 is talking about the only form of "swearing" there was in the bible times, which is this definition: "make a solemn statement or promise undertaking to do something or affirming that something is the case."
      These have nothing directly to do with the list of taboo words our culture has created.
