While filming the old ore carriers in Duluth on my honeymoon, in late '69, had been taking 35mm color slides, and Super-8mm (silent) color film, and although I only have slides and movies of the ore carrier Anderson, never could have imagined anything like the Anderson, or the Fitzgerald, ever getting lost out there on the Great Lakes. How wrong I was. Years later, after the Fitz went down, and when filming the Paul Tregurtha coming into Duluth in the late 90s, was then using Hi-8 video. What a sight, but weather calm, so no spectacle, except as to how huge this ship really was entering the canal. It was only later I discovered this had been the largest ship on the Great Lakes at the time, and designed to handle ice during winter months, too. However, it apparently had gotten stuck in the ice on its maiden voyage, according a documentary I'd seen, and while leaving its homeport. Just not sure where that was, but somewhere on the Lakes. And it took a Coast Guard icebreaker to get it loose. After repairs to its massive blunt and dented bow, it then continued plying the Great Lakes, and for years afterwards, apparently without further incident.
