Perseverance Mars Rover got some followers while riding to new location

  • The rocks or debris that are picked up by the wheels of the Perseverance rover will likely continue to be carried along with the rover as it moves across the Martian surface, and it's possible that they may eventually fall out or be dislodged. However, it's also possible that they may become embedded more deeply in the wheels over time, which could potentially affect the rover's mobility or performance. I created 3D visualisation of Perseverance Mars Rover with its new copilots - tiny rocks inside its wheels.

    To people saying poor design, no it isn't. Adding a slant in the wheel just for this would be adding weight that isn't necessary to solve a problem solvable by many other methods. The people who've already built 2 of these and spent 15+ years engineering it probably know what they're doing.

    I don't understan why there's no guiding "list" going inside out to push sand and stones out of the wheels.

      Likely because that would add weight to fix something that would resolve itself anyway or they could do something with the robot to fix it itself.

    Needs a bit of a spiral added to the inner wheel profile. Self-cleaning as she rolls. Spiral out.

    learning, the hard way. why they put that lip, on the outside contour? that dirt and rock will grind its way through the wheel over time.

    I have been thinking that this rover's wheels design is impractical .... Moon rover's wheels were more reliable.

  • @goldfing5898
    @goldfing5898 Před rokem

    I hope this cannot get a problem, blocking some mechanism. Normally it would be better to remove these stones because they also increase the weight of the rover by some kilograms (?). Maybe they will fall off over time, otherwise maybe there is a turning maneuver to get rid of them.

      Those wheels are designed to filter any substrates out. Will be gone soon.

    These rovers are most limited by weight and durability requirements, thats why they didnt optimize a way to self clean the rocks from the wheels
