From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and released worldwide by Universal Pictures.

Because he is not a voice actor, and he just play himself in everything, that cast is filled with people like that.
I really hope they do some sort of change in the voice, like make Chris retake his lines with an Italian accent or something. If movie studios were willing to change Sonic's entire design for the live action movie, maybe it's not too late for the studio to change Chris's lines

Bowser’s voice at 1:28 when he captures the star is super fitting. Also, at 1:22 Bowser firing and destroying the building was super impressive. Movie’s plot reminds me of the plot from Super Mario 64. And the fact that Bowser and his army are going for the stars? Yikes!!! The Koopas going for the stars in the Mario series is historically the worst case scenario for what Mario and Luigi have to overcome 😬

I like how Bowser had Kamek move the penguins aside so he could damage their castle without hurting them. He's not just a destroyer, but a conqueror. A ruler. And a ruler requires subjects.

The penguins were an unexpected treat. I especially love the look on Bowser’s face when they throw the snowballs as the music cuts out. I can’t tell if he’s bored or is just thinking “you Gotta be kidding me.”

So, seeing as how Bowser finds the power star to take over the kingdom is similar to Super Mario 64, it could be a while after the movie releases to make a game based on This.

I was expecting Bowser to be a Gru-like meme lord for this movie, but Jack Black managed to bring some genuine menace to the king koopa while keeping that Jack Black charm that tells me he'll probably be a fun character. He'll probably be Illumination's best villain since Vector. Of course, a couple lines isn't really enough to fully judge this take on the character yet, but at the very least I'm cautiously optimistic about this movie
That’s a really good point.
I expected Bowser to sound more like Josh Brolin (didn't know Jack Black was playing him before I watched the trailer). But yes, Black did a good job sounding menacing but stilll fun enough for kids to watch. Bowser's entrance was badass!

Remember, Nintendo is involved in the making of this movie, and they are VERY protective of their creations. To the point that when Bowser appeared in Wreck-It Ralph, they told the CGI animators precisely how to make him hold his tea cup. This has the promise to be very high quality.

@@NOTLeavingLV If it was greenlit, then I'd say they were okay with it. Besides, in the early games, the story is that Mario and Luigi were from Brooklyn before being transported through a pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom. This is probably a reference to that.
Just so people now, this isn’t the first time Mario was voiced without having an Italian accent, if you listen closely you can hear a bit of a New Yorker accent, and based on how Mario reacted to the mushroom land he was in, Mario and Luigi in this film may be modeled after the 90s Mario Bros show starred by Former WFF wrestler Lou Albano, which our two favorite plumbers were from Brooklyn NY before being sucked into the world of the Mushroom Kingdom
Even knowing that though, it doesn't sound like Mario, it just sounds like Chris Pratt with a Brooklyn accent. Captain Lou sounded exactly like the pudgy 30-something year old Italian-American plumber Mario's supposed to be. Heck, Vinny's exaggerated impression of Lou would still be alright for Mario here. Chris just sounds like every awkward nicer-than-nice protagonist he's ever played.

Warrior kings were a thing basically from 3000 bc until roughly 1490 sround the time king Richard III died in battle. Shakespeare dramatized his death with the famous quote "A horse, my kingdom for a horse!" Because he was demounted and urged to get back into the battle.
Most other kings aren't giant fire breathing dragon turtles who can probably win the war alone
A lot of kings fought, it was until the invention of the guns is where they started to not go towards the battlefield and took on another role

I love how after seeing the casting call for the first time before the trailer, everyone laughed the hardest when Jack Black was selected as Bowser. Now, we all collectively agree it was no mistake.

Him and Jack Black are really giving their all. They don’t sound anything like themselves, especially Keegan.
Yeah he sounds really good as Toad. They modified his voice a bit to fit Toad better, you can hear a little bit of his voice come through when he says "come on, Mario!"
Jack Black is without a doubt the perfect choice for the role of Bowser. It’s so intimating and chilling! I LOVE IT!

Great job Nintendo and Illumination I'm really impressed and I can't wait to see more of this movie hopefully at The Game Awards in December this year and I'm hyped to go and see when it opens in early 2023.

@@12alldayeveryday Would it be better if he just used his voice with no accent? No, not at all. Mario is a famously Italian plumber. They should have voiced him with an Italian, that's pretty much the only way he would sound like Mario.
For Illumination's animation, this is absolutely incredible!
Probably because the animators had an actual budget to work with thanks to the partnership with Nintendo. Illumination are usually known to make movies with as small a budget they can get away with.
@@wintersong2266 That's a pretty good thought process but according to current resources (which very well could change after the movie's release) this film is still around the same budget range as most of Illumination's more recent films. Of course, this is still too new to know if that's for sure the case, but I felt like it deserved to be at least mentioned.

One of my favorite things about game movies is they sort of provide explanations. Like what makes the bad guy a villain, and why the protagonist is a hero.

I love Mario games. My parents grew up on Mario games. So I’m super excited for this. Bowser sounds great, Kamek sounds cool, King Penguin is perfect, Toad could be slightly more scratchy sounding but is pretty good, and I hope that as more trailers roll out it will make Chris Pratts voice sound a bit more like Mario, because like 3 lines doesn’t really help much.
I feel like full on mario voice might be a bit too much, so definitely excited

I’m sorry, I love Mario I grew up playing it. It was literally my first game I’ve ever played. But there’s no way in Hel the og voice of Mario will carry a hole movie. Not the way he sounds in the game. I think it was smart on there part that they changed it to a more normal sounding voice. Because I don’t think I could get into a movie with Mario sounding the way he usually sounds for an entire movie. That would be so stupid. It just doesn’t work for a movie at all.

Charlie Day as Luigi = Gotta hear some dialogue from this one but he's still got potential.
Jack Black as Bowser = For a guy that stars in a lot of comedy films and is the voice of Po the Panda... He actually makes Bowser sound intimidating.
Keegan-Michael Key as Toad = I was skeptical at first but he actually fits Toad well.
Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek = Thankfully Kevin didn't use his normal voice which would sound to deep for Kamek.
Hopefully in the next trailer we hear Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

i really loved Bowser's design. it looks a bit different, but still familiar in it's own way. his voice is exactly what i hoped for, and that bit with the penguins was pretty funny. Mario's voice, on the other hand sorta reminds me of the old mario cartoon's voice. overall, as a big mario fan, i cannot wait for this.
now, if they released it on Mario day (march 10th for people who don't know.) that would be awesome

For the longest time I have never had a true smile of pure joy and excitement. If I was still the 5 year old that I was who was heavily obsessed with Mario I’d probably lose my shit. But I’m glad that we’re finally getting a faithful adaptation of one of the most popular and well known video game characters of all time
THE most, my friend. This character almost singlehandedly built the industry and is still having hit games starring him to this day. Mario to the video game industry is Classic Coke to Americana. They both even have a less popular, less succesful blue colored rival lol

@@koreyreyes2038 if I'm being honest the Brooklyn accent should be more noticeable but he was specifically told by Nintendo to not do an Italian accent, also every cartoon/movie portrayal of Mario has a Brooklyn accent so it weirdly fits.
I'm glad that the producers and directors decided to make Chriss Pratt sound like himself. If he had sounded like Mario from the games, he would officially be outed as a racist. We all suspect him of it because he's some kind of conservative nutjob, but at least he won't culturally degrade Italian immigrants with a Mario accent.
