When the swarm's bigger than the trap, what do you do?

Once again folks, the swarm is bigger than the box. Granted, the size of this swarm is not as large as the one in the video I posted just 2 days ago, • Can somebody give me a... but it is still very respectable. I made this video almost 6 weeks ago, and I'd like to give an update on it. Three weeks ago I added another deep super to it, and when I checked the box last Saturday, they had drawn out all 10 frames and had some capped honey on two of the frames tops, and our queen was laying.
One of the exciting aspects of catching early swarms is watching how fast they grow, and this one fits the mold perfectly. So grab your favorite cup of your choosing, and sit back and watch as I rub a little bit more dirt in the Roosters face as well as transfer a nuc of bees to a 10 frame box. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

I'd love to learn, but I live in a shoebox in the sky - downtown Chicago (in a highrise building). No land here....just a pool on the 30th floor rooftop. LOL Always been fascinated and in awe of nature - bees especially. You have a kindness and gentle nature that is rare and the bees can feel it....which is why you can scoop them up by hand and only rarely get a sting. Keep wrangling...you're a rare breed! Thanks for all you do!

Jeff I think what happened was the first swarm was small. It stayed in the box with its queen. The new swarm was so massive they just steamrolled over the small swarm as they overwhelmed the smaller swarm and never had many resources yet as the privet bloomed and the new swarm had nectar and numbers to be unstoppable

Thank You Mr. Ed. You sir are such an inspiration. I had just about given up on Beekeeping since we had a terrible passed couple of years. But since Carolyn sent me to you, I have been inspired again. All of my girls had either left or just simply died off I don't know. But all we have is one hive left. We caught a swarm from that hive, but it was extremely small. But the queen was there so maybe just maybe we are back. Two hives and we're back, yeah right. Again thanks Mr. Ed you and Carolyn saved us.

Hi! I just subscribed. I really like bees and I guess l liked them too much, because it turns out there's a hive in the wall between me and my neighbor and they'll have to go through my wall to get in. Anyway, at least it's beekeepers getting the bees and I sure hope they can get them out all right, but I'm a little nervous for my cats and me. Watching you handle the hives makes me feel a bit better. Keeping bees has got to be one of the oldest monastic practices, so it's great that you keep and care for them at the Abbey.

Thank you so much for subbing to my channel, you humble me with your gift. Here's a suggestion, since you have bees living with you, how about joining a bee club in your area and really learn how to tend them. You may even become inspired enough to ask a member if they could assist in removing the bees and setting them up in your yard. You are right about the tradition of bee keeping in monasteries, it has been going on for over 1500 years, we are just continuing the practice here at St. Joseph Abbey. you know when all is said and done this year and you have beaten the Dirt Rooster by a 2:1 or even 3:1 margin he is going to claim some lame excuse like "but I did mine without a hood and jacket" or "but I was putting most of my weight on one leg". BTW, you better tell that boy to put down the honeycomb sometimes, they don't make those suits much bigger than what he's got. God Bless and keep wrangling those bees.

    There was somethin' big,
    Hangin' on a tree.
    A box of bees,
    A swarm to see.
    Box was too small,
    For ALL the bees,
    The swarm outside,
    Buzzing, "Please let.us.in.to.
    the 'Inn'!"
    "To the 'Inn',"
    "To the 'Inn',"
    "LET US IN!"
    Mr. E'd was called,
    Knew what to do.
    Put his Bee-suit on,
    Put his Gloves on too.
    Lemon grass oil,
    Swap-pin' some frames,
    Scoo-pin' bees off,
Off of that box full of bees!
    Full of bees!
    Full of Bees!

Mr. Ed: Nice dig on Dirt Rooster. I have a quick question if I may. As you started out by carefully scooping handfulls of bees, you said you were making a special effort in not sturring up the bees you slowly lowered your hands towards the floor inside the 10 frame box, you carefully opened your hands allowing 90% of the bees in your hands to gentley fall to the floor of the box with almost no disruption, and then you came up out of the box, shook both hands violently to dislodge the 10% left on your hands. Would coming up, and excepting the 10% of the bees still clinging to your gloves, and going right back scooping up the remaining 3-5 pounds of bees under the 5 frame nook tied to the tree been less disruptive and had many fewer bees in the air until you had finished removing that big bunch 100%? Just a minor thought for future encounters, perhaps that will become more important as the Afericanized feral swarms move into your neighborhood. Love your videos and love that you include your mom as much as you can. Say high from BACKPORCH APIARIES north of Dallas, TX. Both of you stay safe in the coming weeks.

I am very happy that you and your family enjoy watching my bee wrangling adventures, thank you. I use the sugar water to distract and calm the bees. So I had a surprise Tuesday 5/29... two of my extra hives were taken over by swarms. How long should I wait before I go through them and clean up everything into an actual set up vs. The stack of last year's boxes on a stand. By the way they filled 4 deeps in the stack (had to peek when I noticed they were playing along) all I've done so far was put a top on and look in daily. 2nd swarm same day over filled one side of a double nuc so I took the center out. Am I ok going through them this weekend or should I wait another week?

I have 2 swarm traps high up on poles within 100 yards of the apiary. What is the sequence of events on moving the trapped bees to their permanent hive in the apiary (timing, process) ? I pulled the trap down (bees shut in) and moved the trap to it's final position in the apiary, waited 2 days then opened it up and transferred them to an 8-frame box. Despite forcing them to re-orient, there were still some bees that returned to the swarm trap site and hung out there for days.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Před 3 lety

There are so many different ways of moving a swam trap and then transferring the bees to the regular box. In my opinion, as long as the majority of bees made the transition, the move was a successful one. Great job Bruce. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.

Hi Mr Ed, I just wondered how long a queen could survive in a catcher-cage? I presume and attendant bees would feed her if she wanted them to?

The longest I keep them in a cage is 2 days, but I have forgotten about them and found them dead after 6 or 7 days. Thankfully that has not happened but once. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
      Mr. Ed

You dropped that queen several times, poor girl ;P 😂..... I bet they were happy to get a big enough home. I wonder if they did not just come in there and start robbing the already weak colony and then take over and kill all those bees. Nice catch and god bless, you got another one. See ya on the next one

I think it is a very good possibility to explain all the dead bees. thank you for the blessing and for watching. God's peace.
      Mr. Ed
