  • Review and analysis of the 2023 film Poor Things directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. I take a look at the performances of stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Dafoe, as well as the movie's unconventional visual style and uneven plot. Is this a dazzling yet hollow fairytale or an ambitious misfire?

I thoroughly enjoyed it, laughed unexpectedly more often than in every self-proclaimed „comedy“ of the past years and found it to be a good middleground between „arthouse“ and the spectacle-focused blockbuster culture that modern cinema boiled down to. I think this might be the real strength of this. Reintroduce a generation to movies, that are visually striking but also have a lot of ambiguity, humor and true darkness. It‘s not a Tarkovsky, it’s rather easy to decipher but I found it to be a good thing. Even the „meandering“ parts contained just enough subtext and symbolism to not feel empty to me.

The film has a comedic vein on it, and i think the faulty accent was intentional or accepted by Yorgos for the fun. Mark Ruffalo was surprisingly good, but not great. Was very risky for him. Willem and especially Emma totally owned their roles. Emma was tremendous in this!!!

Imagine how bad the accents would have been if they had set in Glasgow as in the novel! It was pretty shit to be honest.
