Honestly, it feels much more like a "Metroidvania" sort of deal to me, where the world is TECHNICALLY open ended but parts of it are behind barriers that require specific items, skills, or actions to pass through, and a lot of these are completely optional and unrelated to the main quest, they just contain cool items or extra bits of lore.
And as for the airlocks, that just seems to be a sort of a fast travel system, only letting you go to places where you've already been, but still saving you the effort of going there the conventional way if you need to revisit them.

Not quite right, that's a pretty simplified version of things. In an interview with the lead designer, and the CEO of Arkane, they described it more as if the studio was already working on the project, and had wanted to (work on a project with this setting and theme) for a long time, at that point it was unnamed/codenamed as these sorts of games usually are. Bethesda then approached them (around a year into the development phase) and asked if the name 'Prey' fit the project, because they were wanting to renew the franchise. Arkane agreed Prey fit closely enough, which garnered the game a stronger favour with Bethesda than it otherwise had, and pulled more pennies together for marketing budget. Which Bethesda then squandered anyway trying to present it as a schizophrenic horror/action game.

We open on a court room filled with the spiritual successors. Bioshock and Doom 3 fidget nervously. Dead Space eyes the crowd. Alien Isolation stares impassively. On the podium Stardew Valley, the unbiased announcer, clears his throat.
Stardew Valley: We are here today to read the last Will and Testament of System Shock 2. All contents are legally binding.
Murmuring envelopes the crowd. Prey stares down Dead Space 2.
Stardew Valley: I will now begin. "I, System Shock 2, leave my novelty spoon collection to Doom 3. My gun collection will be transferred Dead Space, including the plasma rifle. The suspicious sounding disembodied voice will be given to Bioshock, along with all my funds totally 17 million dollars-"
Dead Space: That's bull! I'm the one most deserving of that because I got the horror most down!
Bioshock: Sure, immediately transforming monsters in flickering lights is totally scary!

Stardew Valley: Now everyone let's not get to violent-
Dead Space: (pulls out saw gun) YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH INDIE GAME TRASH!
All the games pull out guns of all levels of complexity and ammo. They stare each other down, franchises slowly banding together till Dead Space 2 shoots Doom 3. Mass chaos ensues. Bioshock blasts Alien Isolation 's arm off, Dead Space 2 quickly runs out of ammo and punches Doom 3 to death. Prey is killed by Dead Space and Stardew Valley hides under a table clutching a backhoe in fear. Bio shock is fatally stabbed by Dead Space who is then shot by Bioshock infinite. Dead Space 2 and Bioshock Infinite then shoot simultaneously and die. Stardew Valley sees and exit and jumps out the window. Dead Space 3, whom nobody noticed, walks over the carnage and proceeds to edit the will so he gets everything and leaves

Honestly Prey 2017 is one of the best games I’ve ever played, right up there with Dishonored.
As for that, you can dislike Dishonored if you want but it’s legit one of the best games of the decade.
Irony of ironies is that Arkane, that amazing studio, is owned by Bethesda, a studio known for buggy, rushed, “what do you mean there’s preexisting lore that clearly means this is impossible? Nah the fans will find a retcon for us.”

I remember playing it in early 2018 and getting a lot of Half-life vibes, then not but a few months ago(around Half-life Alex) it was announced that Arkane had actually been working on Half-life 3 before it got shitcanned one of the many times it got shitcanned.

The combat is solved by the Glue gun + Wrench (pistol/shotgun for tougher enemies) combo though, not abusing the free refill drones. My first playthrough was no typhon neuromods because the game told me turrets would see me as a Typhon if I had enough, which told me that would probably have negative repercussions for the ending. And in that playthrough I found that the game pretty easy as long as you master the glue gun and upgrade your shotgun enough. This is the first "scary" game I've played that barely scared me aside from the occasional ambush, I think it's more of an action game than a horror game. Very good game, one of the few rare games I've played without spoiling anything apart from the intro being a fake-out, I was very satisfied with the experience, it was surprisingly immersive.

After playing Prey 2006 I am sorely disappointed that the closest we have as a successor to it was Portal. There's as much time solving gravity puzzles as you are shooting enemies while going through a massive alien space intestine. Still, at least 2017's Prey also has a wrench in it so they can say that.

I rather disagree with the notion of Doom 3 being a System Shock 2 successor. D3, while being slow and ponderous at times, is a linear shooter where the solution is always more shooting. System Shock 2 and derivitives are all rather Metroidvania-ish, with a single location that opens up as you find more crap to unlock barriers, while also having skill trees that let you vary your playstyle.

  • @sonny5285

This review is spot on. To the lack of "horror" I would say that the first few hours, after you learn that a mimic can be virtually anything in the environment, and when you only have a wrench (and even up until you get a gun), it was kind of frighting to go out and search for things. The reaction you have as a player is to be more careful after you die a few times, and this adds to the overall innervation. Yea, maybe it was really only a "jump scare" tactic, and yes, you get murdered a bunch at first, but, I think the mimic enemy concept added an unusual, strange, and horror-esque feeling throughout the initial part of the game.

As soon as you get the psychic water, the game gets almost too easy. If you go for a Typhon power heavy build, unlock the psychic water, and equip the coral psi Regen, then you can just spam them and never worry about much from then on. If you know where to look and memorize a few set passwords and where some mission gear is, from early on, you can grab some guaranteed power ups, dozens of free neuromods, and enough ammo to handle the entire game without much of a struggle.
