  • This is my take on Huli Huli Chicken Thighs. I am not Hawaiian, but my dad grew up there. He brought so many amazing dishes into our home. I grew up on spam fried rice, kalbi short ribs, all kinds of fish, and of course, this recipe. The version I make is a little bit of a hybrid between my dad's teriyaki and Huli Huli, but it is no less delicious. The full recipe is below.
    Thanks Josh Hooper for filming!

    HULI HULI RECIPE:
***I measure with feeling, so before you throw your chicken in, taste the marinade, and if it needs something, add it.
    6 Chicken thighs
    1 sweet onion
    a few green onions
    1 tablespoon of ginger
black pepper, white pepper, chili flake
    2 cups aloha shoyu
    2 table spoons ketchup
    1 cup brown sugar
    a dash of nori furikake
    and a splash of coke.
Marinade overnight, and cook over medium high coals, flipping often to avoid burning the sugars.
Thanks for watching, and don't forget to share what you create.

Love how you talk about the grill and it being an opportunity for people to come together. Could not agree more!!!

Its a funny thing eh? You can be in a neighbourhood down here in Australia, and any one of a number of 'nesian families from Samoa, Rotuma, Tonga, Fiji etc... will be bbqing with chicken marinated in some combo of pineapple juice, soy sauce, ginger and garlic and what not. That smell is just a childhood memory that doesnt leave. My kids love it, I haven't even begun to explain to them the Islander foods :) bout time I get to it and explain their heritage a bit more eh?

That sounds so good man! What kind of wood do you like to use? Also would you be willing to share the full recipe for the chicken?

@@bryanherman8601 everyone is a little different I guess. You can use lime, pineapple, or even orange soda. I just threw together what I had that day.
