    Great test, thanks! But there is one important point:
    Mini with aperture 1.7 at the same shutter speed will take a picture with a smaller iso. Where the air is 2s ISO 800, the mini 3 will have iso400.
    So it is more realistic to compare personnel with different ISOs, if we cannot install the same aperture on these drones.

    I think the Mini 3 Pro is a good grab and go drone for traveling light and could be a great back up drone. I have an Air 2S and I'm still very interested to get the Mini 3 Pro cos of the weight and the crazy amount of features it packs in such a small body. Both for indoor and outdoor shooting the new drone will be amazing.

    Thanks for the great review. While I see the advantages of the Mini 3 on your chart, picking out the fine details, the ultimate comparison is the in - air shots and while they look close I really preferred the Air 2S. You could see noticeable artifacts and "movement" of the image in the mini 3 4x comparisons and the Air 2S remains really smooth and detailed. all that said... I bought the mini 3 because of the price / size / performance which is near ideal because the quality is so very close to the Air 2S (I doubt I'd know which image is which if they weren't side by side) but I have to admit the Air 2S still have the clear quality advantage.

    These test results are not representative of real world images. The DNGs indeed indicate that the Mini 3 pro outperforms the Air 2S - at leat up to ISO 800. At ISO1600 and above the mini 3 pro degrades very quickly, suggesting that the outperformance at lower ISOs may be due to software pre-processing. If you pull down the images from the DPR sample galleries for these two drones you will see that any time you need to aggressively pull up the shadows or control highlights the Air 2S outperforms by a large margin.

    Some people take money and deliberately try to belittle legends so that minions can get a place to stand.
    He says he only wants to compare Apples with Apples and then in the next breath he compares Mini with Air2S. 😂
    Air2S has a 1 inch sensor, it also has top sensors and I have seen it work. Take it under a tree and press RTH. The drones flies out of the tree and then starts to get to the designated altitude and then flies back. These sensors also act as front sensors when the drone is flying forward at an angle.
    It has precision landing, hence landing light, flies faster, has cooling fan, can shoot Hyperlapse using way points nav, can create movies on its own by flying in patterns and compile a video in real time, can handle stronger headwinds better, shoot d-log, can lift a gopro or insta360 OneX2 with ease and a host of other features.
    So don't compare a Mini with Air 2S.
    There's nothing that the Mini3 has but Air2S doesn't, but it sure is the other way around.
    And yes, Air2S does have Ocusync 03 and APAS 4.0.

    Wish you would have compered the 5.4K video of the Air 2S with the 4K Mini 3. I get that you want to compare apples to apples but you went ahead and compared the 48 megapixel to the 20 megapixel so you already kind of broke that comparison. My point is, would have liked to see the absolute best video quality both drones could produce.

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  Před 2 lety +9

      The 48MP vs 20MP was because DJI mentions that the Mini 3 was better at that level so we put that to the test. We can probably do a flight with Octozilla soon and compare 5.4k to 4k and see what happens.

    • @lalljp
      @lalljp Před 2 lety +1

      48 megapixels is the native resolution of the 3 Pro so it is apples to apples. The one downside is that you don't get the raw quad bayer data, it turns it into a traditional bayer pattern

    So the mini has more thrust, but according to other CZcamsrs, it has to work harder in strong winds and they are getting a lot of battery warnings popping up on screen. I also don't understand how the Air 2S can fly at a higher speed with less thrust. Something not explained here. They are both rated at level 5, but in the real world, how would both of these do in the same amount of high wind? In terms of flight capability in sports mode. Wouldn't being able to fly faster in harsh conditions suggest more stability?

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  Před 2 lety +1

      More thrust to weight ratio doesn't mean more thrust. Larger motors means faster speeds. It just means that if the A2S had better T/W ratio, it would fly even faster than it does now.
      We have not had a chance to do a true wind test or compare it to other drones in that sense, we are trying to figure out how to do that more scientifically. The A2S is heavier to it will be more stable in wind.

    • @zeroneutral

    Great video, thanks. I have an Air 2S that I use for photogrammetry and generating orthomosaics. The Mini 3 Pro would definitely be better because the edges of the image from the Air2S are blurry and have chromatic aberration. The 3 appears sharp across the whole frame and also has more pixels

    • @designer.346
      @designer.346 Před 2 lety +6

      Hey man I do the same too, but I think the Air 2S is still better to generate the point cloud, since they're 20MP native photos and that means a better GSD (Ground Sample Distance). I think the Mini 3 adds more digital sharpening to the corners of the image, because you know sometimes when you have a large aperture a lot of detail goes away so they compensate that with software on the Mini 3. For example I got a f1.4 lens for my canon camera and when I shoot on that aperture the corners are awful so blurry, but when I shoot in f2 of above the detail is better.
      And the 2S is a more robust drone, the Mini 3 can easily be drifted by a wind gust, which can compromise the overlap, and that new gimbal we still don't know how steady is for photogrammetry, that's what I think

    Doesn’t a lot come down to what the viewer is using to watch it on? Depending on the quality of my phone, pad, TV and my my data connection. If I’m watching the video on an older iPhone it matters a lot less the differences in recorded quality. I think shot angles, lighting, timing, framing and the raw talent of the pilot creating the feel of the shot makes a video more appealing and interesting than the slight differences in quality that might be lost by the viewer anyway.

  • @MrBigbadbowen
    @MrBigbadbowen Před rokem

    In terms of photos, what was the scale of the picture? I couldn't really get a grip on it, if you zoom in to any picture you will 'see' grain/noise, but the other thing with photos is a qualitative element, which you simply cannot judge on a chart, you can get an inpression of ability, but you need to see the big picture.From a personal point I have the Air 2, which I am very happy with, but I think Id like to keep for larger scale, landscape work, but I am interested in acquiring the mini 3 pro as it is under the 249g cut-off and therefore opens up a whole area of access denied to the larger drone, if it can use the same controller I am almost sold!

    Hey. This is a great video. Thank you so much. Yes I'm pretty set on this Mini 3 Pro. And you pretty much firmed that up for me. Thanks again.
    Now as far as that additional noise. I have another way to deal with that. That I've been doing for years. From way back in, Analog Video, days. VHS and mini DV.
    I discovered. Most of that noise you are looking at. Is in the chrominance. Not in the luminance, as much. And so when I want to get rid of the noise. While originally using,, Sony Vegas now Magix Vegas. They have a feature. Where you can blow out the focus. On the chrominance. And when I do that. All the noise virtually, vanishes.
    Basically what I have done here is… Basically reproduce. The Color Under, processing. Of VHS videotape. The color is lower in resolution in, S-VHS. Where the resolution is higher in luminance. And the picture remains, clean. With far less noise. Which is mostly in the chrominance. In the color. In other words. And color does not need to be high in resolution. The luminance does. That's the black-and-white portion. Where you see all the lines and the fine detail. And you can get away with less resolution in the color. You won't see any less resolution. Because the resolution is in the black-and-white luminance section. With hardly any noise.
    So give it a try for yourself. If your software accommodates that? I found Vegas to be the most effective and easiest to use. Even though I had the Avid Media Composer, software. That is far deeper and more complex. Great for Hollywood productions. Overkill for most average productions. And Vegas. A previously multitrack audio program. Which is my specialty. Later introduced, video. And works more like an audio program. And is very intuitive. For real photographers and videographers, cinematographers. Nowhere near as technical as Media Composer. And compatible with far more computers.
    So I am now 67 and currently, struggling into, retirement. As I'm not used to being retired. I'm not used to having most of my friends,, my husband and my younger 64-year-old brother all dead now, either. In short I am emotionally shattered and devastated.
    And so after my 99 1/2-year-old mother passes on. Which could be tomorrow or years from now. I will then get my own life back. To be alone. To be Nomadic in an RV. And getting some beautiful video of beautiful places throughout the USA. And then maybe also. Doing some commercial projects. Once I get that FAA Part 107 Drone License, permit. Which I do not anticipate will be, much of a problem, for me. As I was a student pilot back in my teenage years. Flying Piper Cherokee 140 and 180's. With my dad. And I got to take my own flying lessons with the instructor, also. Just not as many as dad. As I'm a much better pilot than dad was ever. And I had planned to enter the US military to become a jet fighter pilot. But without a Masters Degree. That's not going to happen. It didn't happen. I have no degree. I just know how to fly.
    So this thing looks absolutely, Super! What a great review. You are a real pro. And you said it all. It was so clear and succinct. And what is that groovy accent you have? Is that a German accent? Or, did I get that wrong? Either way. You European types are so accurate and precise. You are, intelligent, creative and articulate. Some others are, also. Most can hardly talk. Most are dweebs.. Most are fat dumpy guys. Like the one in Idaho. Oy vey. What a fuddy-dud. Ugh! His fingers are too fat for the remote control! He has no talent. He has no eye. He has no professional, panache. He doesn't even know how to fly his drone, gracefully. He keeps stopping in midair. And then rotating. Jesus H Fucking Christ! It's not on an Invisible Tripod! You fly it! Rotate and tilt as you fly it. He doesn't know how to do that very well. He keeps stopping! What are you doing! Ugh!
    And so it's great to get it from the mouth of a Pro, such as, yourself. I mean… I worked for NBC-TV News. In Washington, DC for,, 20 years. And I ran Studio Cameras and ENG shoulder cameras. Like this:
    czcams.com/video/y8BPQxbAdFY/video.html
    this was fun to shoot. Johnny Artis was the bandleader. On vocals. And when I got there. He asked me to also set up the PA system and mix the band. I said I'm also running a handheld camera! He said do the best you can. Sure..
    So I took a feed off of the PA mixer. The one channel of the camcorder. And on the other channel I had the shotgun microphone.. On the camcorder. The editor at NBC could then selectively mix the two together. He didn't take the direct PA mixer track as loud as I had wanted him to. Oh well. He relied a lot on the shotgun microphone. Which was not the better sounding mix. Oh well. That's the way it goes. And Skunk Baxter was cool. I enjoyed speaking with him. He's always been one of my heroes. The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. Two of my favorite bands. Everyone else's also. And he was fun to talk to. I asked him about the Doobie Brothers. And he said he never smoked any of that stuff. I said oh really? And you're a conservative. And then you were in a band. Named after a, 120 volt, plug into the wall. Ladies,, aluminum, dill dough, vibrator. And I asked him how conservative that was? He laughed. Because that's what a Steely Dan, is! It's a ladies vibrator! To remove stress and frigidity. Yeah right! Yee ha! Woo hoo! Oh God oh God oh God oh God! It works. It doesn't fail. It never lets you down. It uses no batteries. It has extra Power! But it doesn't fly like a drone. I do. I might even sound like a drone?
    I'm set on that unit. And by the time I'm ready to purchase that unit. They will come out with the Mini-4Pro. And then I will be, stymied, again. Looking at that one and going WOW! And then purchasing a, Refurbished Mini 3-Pro. At a substantial savings. I don't mind refurbished equipment. Especially when it is, virtually, new.. With the full warranty and extra, service and replacement insurance. And so you really can't go wrong that way. And if it's a piece of crap? It will unfortunately crash. Sent back to DJI and likely replaced. Or completely restored. And off I go again!

    At 18:04 of your video where you see purple artifacts from the mini 3 pro is normal because due to the fact that your not using filters and with the Mini 3 pro aperture of F1.7.
    Many cameras shooting wide open with a very high shutter speed results In purple fringing. With all my cameras I try my best to shoot not more than 1/1000. As the white is dominating in your chart any other less colour introduce will have this issue.
