Boom
Corporal I like your videos but this one was real cool. You went more in depth on the knots an it made it really friendly. Keep on
Those are the two knives I have in my bug-out bag and my survival pack and my camping gear now. Mine's the ranger grip 79 not the 78 but only difference is the corkscrew and I got a sail needle in the cork screw. The reason I went with that was the exact reason you said the red ever read lanyard on it and a red lanyard on my garber as well. I lost camo colored knives many many times as a kid and learned that Brite colors are best for a woods knife JUST IN CASE you drop it or set it down in a goofy spot.
@recall5814
Hey Shawn! Just watching this now & as usual, awesome content.
I noticed part of the L /.7 trap almost looked like a wooden chess piece which made it neater & as I watch, hopefully you'll address why you blunted out both ends beyond the notch to go with the other L /7.
An idea although I can imagine it being time consuming & taking you away from your normal content, but, have you ever decided to handcraft a full wooden chess set?
Maybe put it on your Etsy or wherever?
Depending on price, I could see a lot of your subs scoffing something like this if they know you made it or had anything to do with it.
Question, with your fishing trap, what style "test" line is the best?
I guess it depends on whatever you're trying to catch but, is there one you use more "universally" out of everything else?
Anywho, again Awesome content!

If it's the woods around me, you may get some wolf spider trying to snag the knife to make it's hunting easier!! Same idea for certain places that have the carpenter sized biting ants! Those buggers possibly made off with a pair of my ex GF's Ray-Bans when we went kayaking & checked out an island whose top turned into a HUGE ant hill & could be using them for Solar tech of some kind??
Corp I don’t think a lot of people realize in a survival situation simple is the way to go. You don’t have time or energy to use complex things. You need quick, simple and to the point procedures that can save your life!! Love that your going back old school!!
Greatest comment on any platform or channel on Utube " if I could relive '91 thru '99 over and over" I feel you bro born in '77 we are dinosaurs from a different time and a different America
Born in '79 I totally agree, I actually had a childhood worth something not just filled with electronics and snowflakes
I have a construction background too, which is probably why I like all these bushcraft building videos and why I built a fort in the woods. The only thing that I've used that I haven't seen you use is a Scotch eyed auger to make holes in wood so I can then carve a wooden nail to hold stuff together because I've been trying to use just the things that I find in the area to hold stuff together, so that means no rope and no knots. I do carry some rope with me just in case but I have been trying not to use it. I have also been building with clay because the stuff is quite abundant. I'm trying to make a homemade brick but, so far, that hasn't worked too well yet. I have managed to make some decent mortar out of it though and so the masonry that I've done on some jobs has really come into play there so it's not just all of my experience in carpentry that comes in handy. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Look at some of his earlier videos. He actually made one that came apart with things from like Lowes that he welded together and then used a store bought one later.
I, too, would love to see more uses for it. 😉 😜
For an old school vid... This is one of the best because to me, the bushcrafting of the fishing gear was outstanding and I can see how you could use that and work on another project or two while enjoying the bounty of nature. Thank you for all you do Good Sir and God bless you and your family.
Amen brother - 1990-1999 was the last strand of the real timeline. Save me a seat on the time machine. I'll bring beers.
Shawn these are my favorite of your videos. KISS. So much taught in basically 23 minutes. Great work.
That's how I found this channel years ago I needed to learn some knots for camping/bushcraft with the kids
When I first started watching your channel years ago, this type of instructional videos, and your way of presentation, is what drew me to watch more and more. I really enjoy your videos, just for that reason. Some of your vids from 4 or 5 years ago are still very entertaining. Keep up the good work.
I feel the same! Feels like watching old school videos miss them
I came into the Marines a few years after you and we learned that if it is stupid and it works, it isn't stupid. S/F. Keep up the good work.
When I was young and didn’t have to work I would do a lot of lake fishing. I had my own version of passive fishing. Bait your pole cast it out, stretch out on the bank, pin the pole under your arm, pull out a book and read through osmosis ( put the book over your eyes and snooze). Best way to spend a summer afternoon. 😂😂
Poncho shelter! Trusty knots! Passive fishing! L7 wizardry! Frog gig/cook! 1 Corporal video = many wins!
Please make a video on avoiding bugs without commercial products, thanks.
I am an old guy and when I was in US Army from 69 to 76, we used those old heavy OD green ponchos that worked great but were really heavy. I now carry two of those old ones instead of a tent and they are very effective. Still heavy and that translates to much more sturdy in my mind now. Also, I have been a paracord guy forever... and I am going to try out the bankline alternative for fall hunt. Your knot knowledge and the things you build with the bankline have convinced me to try this new way. Thanks.
We were in different times in our lives; but you are so, SO, right the 90’s we’re IT. Summer of 01 was like The End.
Thank you Shawn for reminding me of days gone by with the poncho shelter. Stay vigilant.
We had an illegal assault weapons ban during the 90's other than that yeah the 90's was good.
When i was in the Army from 75 to 96 I always had that poncho and liner every time we went to the field. They would keep you really warm in the ice and snow, just sitting there in the dirt and tucked in around you on the ground.
I appreciate you and have nothing but respect for you. My granddaughter and I learn and enjoy your videos and learn something something every video.🐕🦺🇺🇲
Another great weekend video overnighted in the woods. As a formal Army guy, your knots are terrific and honestly I find myself stopping to ret it right. Old school equipment still works for me.. Thank you again! See you next week.
I enjoy always watching you on Sunday morning coffee and the corporal go so well together
I am a Marine and served 1988-1996, Active/Reserve as 0351 Anti Tank Assaultman (Infantry). The entire time I was in, I ALWAYS carried in my butt pack, a poncho, loaded spare magazine(for M16), stripped down MRE, mini maglight(with red lense attachment), compass, small pocket knife, pen(ink stick) and notebook. When I went to SOI (School Of Infantry Camp Geiger ), one of our Instructors was in Force Recon. He told us what he ALWAYS carried, regardless of mission. When ever he was leading course of instruction, we all paid attention. Great video. Great examples of K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid ). Keep videos coming!
Gear I also grew up on using all around the world in all environments. De Oppresso Liber
Military bushcraft! My prefered kind, thanks for sharing Cpl. Kelly 👍👍
I'd like to see you make a wrist launcher for the frog gig.
This was a great video. I like these three points. The closeup of tie the knot. Making of the fishing pole spring and the cooking of the frog
Haters are going to hate my friend. Love your projects and the fact you teach us something every week. Thanks for sharing 🤠
I still have my gear from Vietnam. I use them for hunting and survival. when I hunt, I am living as a survivalist, E & E. many times during the entire 3 month season.
I have followed and loved your videos for years but these are the best you have ever done! The old school techniques are really useful in so many different settings. I live in rural Maine and I have used your skills in an incredible number of circumstances. Thank you so much and keep ‘‘em coming!
Keep coming with the content. I now have an unconscious habit of looking for your channel every day!
Always makes sense to pack one tool that will do multiple jobs while in the bush. Another great video Brother.
I like your thinking. Be a master of a few things that can cover a wide range. Rather than knowing everything but it's half ass.
Nice, I like that camp setup. I collect axes and have some fine current production and awesome old school axes. I will add one of those Hardcore Hammer Hatchets to my collection and it may become my go to axe when I go out. Keep up the good work.
I love the old school poncho, it brings back so many memories!!! I never had the opportunity to make a shelter with one, but man the size of that shelter is impressive AF!!! Once again BRAVO ZULU Devil Dog!!!
1:45 I feel that every second of my life, I miss the 90's, I would live and die in the 90's, it's incredible how everything went to hell, the analogy you make with back to the future 2 is excellent, that's how it feels, a nightmare parallel reality .
Your explanation about the the "pack ax" was excellent 👌. To many people live in that fantasy world 😂.
Corporal I have got to tell you. I enjoy watching your videos. They are simple, clear and concise. You do an outstanding job. Thank you.
Well constructed and a great choice of knots. You are one of the few that place importance on knots. Knots make the difference. The constrictor knot and the arbor knot are two of my favorites. Google the Transom knot. It adapts the constrictor knot to lash two sticks together at right angles.
Kermit the Frog was just getting ready to sing The Rainbow Connection when Corporal snuck up and snared him on a frog gig. Miss Piggy is gonna be pissed. 😉
"Why are there so many, songs about ARGHHH!"
This is one of my favorite shelters so far…realistic and achievable beginners and even if you don’t have a partner you can pack 2 ponchos of your own and still be packed pretty light
A plain old bushhook works good for catfishing
We love your solo overnighter and everything you do man. I'm speaking before finishing your video. But as others and even yourself have noted CZcams treats you poorly, but you are one of the most hardcore channels out here, and I've learned so much from you on how to survive and prolong the inevitable haha. You're awesome shawn.
I love my late 90s time in the marines. I had the same gear, obviously. The 90s were a great time for me. 911 or something completely fucked everything up
OUTSTANDING!!! Love frog legs. Taste like chicken when you eat it, burps like fish after eating it.😂
Never fails on the videos definitely gives me something too look forward too on a Sunday thanks for a outstanding video corporal!
I think that there will be so many, who are only half paying attention now, that will need a crash course in survival in the near future. Most will initially feel overwhelmed by the task. The simple gear and the simple skills that you demonstrate could do much to alleviate that. I look forward to more videos like this one, and I encourage anyone else who may be watching them to share them with as many people as you can.
Outstanding. If you get the chance try this.
Soak them in buttermilk for 1/2 hr. Flour, egg then Panko breadcrumbs. Season as needed, fry them. Outstanding!!!
The military Poncho is an excellent piece of equipment
Sounds like some of those whinny critics think bushcrafting is actually reenacting. They should probably be watching some of my reenacting channels. They wouldn't be so confused that way. Good vid. I learn something from everything you do. At 73 I learned my favorite knot from you, the bowline. It seemed so complicated till I figured out how many other knots are a variation of it. Your slow methodical approach worked. Thanks.
Woooooow! I woke up, checked the Etsy store, saw 5-6 of those cold handle skillets available. Made some coffee, and they all sold!
Love this .. Great one bud . Idea for a short mid-week video: Basic off grid First Aid . I'm a Nationally Registered Medic and you wouldn't believe how many people have absolutely no clue what to do in a minor emergency situation.
Great idea!
Great spot for an overnight shelter. Cold handle skillets really make food look great. Thank you for sharing all your survival skill. Be safe, stay healthy, & God Bless evryone!
You looked happy in this vid Shawn. I certainly enjoyed it😊.
Primitive camping with self-caught chow. Now that’s the real deal. Great video! Side note about catching frogs. When I was a Boy Scout back in the late 70’s early 80’s, we found that the same spring pole that was catching our fish can also be used to “gig” frogs also. Seemed just as fun to “fish” frogs as fish.
I like the recent direction you’ve taken on your channel. I am not a long time sub nor a camper…yet? I enjoy the way you produce your videos l watch wood turners and hoof trimmers as well as bushcraft/camping 😂. I just don’t like silent or fast forward films. After Church video stop is Corporals corner. Thanks and don’t let a couple of critics with unsolicited advice bother you. You have a winning formula here.
I would like to see you do a 2 day camping trip and forage....
Outstanding AF. Love the use of repeatable nots and simplicity of the nots. I really like the poncho builds you roll out, weather it’s tents, hammocks, or beads. Totally agree that it’s a must have for anyone. I never doubted your frog gig. Super skill to be able to make them. Loved the mid week video showing how you make them. Also enjoy watching you make the L7 notches and how to use them. There was so much in this video for everyone. Outstanding AF. Love the new ax too. Thank you for your service and thank you for your channel and craftsmanship. Very much appreciated 💯
Outstanding and I consider that a real survival hacket.
A tool is only only a tool when it's working for you. When it comes to hatchets and axes, it's really just your preference. I try to pack it light and use tools that do as many jobs as they can based on my intentions. Corporal demonstrates that importance very well.
'91-'99... lol. Soon after the service, and a few years ago. (Wish) Ol' O. Arthritis keeps telling me to get lighter equipment, so this video works for me. Great gear, Corporal, and a great video. God bless.
As someone old enough to be your father, I apprecaie your use of the Old School timeless principle of "starting Simple & Build on i!" Also, I am privileged to have several Old School tools which have been handed down from older generations; and they are good for future generations. If the tool is high-quality & works, why worry whether some TV personality's endorsement is on it? As you wisely said, "Why try to re-invent the wheel?" Most of my bushcraft tools are tools which I use year round at home or wherever. I loved the Old School Primitive structure for your shelter frame. It could be used with Old school; military; modern, or bushcraft tarps. You are one of the best & one of my favorites! Thanksfor your service, & Semper Fi!
I am from Maine. My parents gave me a great book on the ways of the NE tribes for Christmas when I was 13. I bring this up because it describes and has drawings of how to make a gig out of wood and lashing. It also describes how to a make a strike trigger for one.
anyway, just thought I would throw that in,
Thank you for this video. The double-poncho shelter looks to be outstanding, especially for warmer weather.
Bluegill in butter, on the creek-bank... ahhh... takes me back to the Sixties.
Rock on!
Sunday with the Corporal again. great video this week. I love the old school gear. Nothing like a simple poncho shelter. You are right that everything doesn't have to be complicated. The web has exploded with people doing bushcraft things but none of them have your take on it. You do a good job Sir. Thanks for all you do and keep up the good work.
I agree with you on the axe. If that’s what you choose then that IS your survival/bushcraft tool. There are no rules for this. It’s whatever you choose as your tools. Whatever works for each individual.
I look forward to giving that spring pole a try. Thanks!
My grandma Hilda taught me how to that leader! I've been making them for 50 years ❤. Now I'm teaching my grandkids! Thank you for sharing this skill for this generation and beyond!! Masterfully done! Oh I almost forgot; digging for worms! One of my favorite things
I've been a subscriber for some time and this was one of my favorite videos. Life doesn't have to be complicated, we make it that way. Multi use tools are the best. Kinda like the Corporal! THANKS!!
That natural flap, so simple, why am I just learning about it 55 years after earning my Boy Scout camping merit badge? I learn something new from you Shawn, every week, my Sunday training.
Hey Shawn, another great overnighter. Thank you for the training and time you put into these videos…🇺🇸
Kiss is right no muss no fuss. I like the cfp90 patrol pack.
Great video the best part of my kit is a military H harness a butt pack an military canteen. I’m with you on the knots too sq knot, bowline, arbor knot, clove, and half hitch oughta do it. Continue to kick azz and take names. Semper Fi. SSgt B
Teach the trolls truth Corp! Outstanding vid as always. Carry On!
I love the pic of the axe 🪓 in the end lol. We don't bury the hatchet unless it's in a log!! Keep em coming Cpl.
Excellent style change.. I love the closeup bushcraft details with explanations!
Awesome dude simple skills to to stay alive thanks
Bluegill is my favorite pan fish to eat!
Love the old gear too, my goes back to WWII, more of nostalgia, You seem to have a blue gill stocked pond, that was the first fish I ever caught. Thanks for a great informative video, the passive fishing, and the number of knots you need to know at the beginning. Take care and enjoy.
carpenters hatches with one heil of a handal very nice i have a old one made by plum
Back to basics. Beautiful! 👍👍
As always, beautiful work on that shelter. So perfect and snug. Also, it’s so cool that you can harvest your food on your own property! Excellent video!
I love the old school gear simple but it works . That why I collect old school gear .
Corporal corner,ALWAYS kicks ass,in information,know-how,and down right common sense! Great stuff!
Now that was a bad ass show! Thanks Corp, sorry I'm late! Had to work! Love the L7!! Good tool!!
Love the poncho set up! When I was in the Army that poncho was my best friend! Hooah
Outstanding! Teaching the basics never gets old!
Great stuff as usual. Maybe you can do a short review of what Tarred bank line should be feel like. My wife bought me a roll with best intentions but it ended up being just nylon line. Sadly the package was labeled "tarred bank line".
Hello from Oklahoma! The old fart here. Outstanding Video! I'm really enjoying the mid week videos also. Those little sunfish are damn tasty! I think people need to remember, in the old days it wasn't called " bushcraft", And people did their own thing that worked for them in their particular region and circumstances. Basically, You Do You! It's not a cookie cutter craft or skill. Example, I carry small pruning shears and find them damn handy. Am I wrong ? No, it works for me. You do You. Thanks for all You Do! God Bless!
Awesome...looks like this one is a winner. Keep being the Corporal...😊
I have a lot of packing and gear but my LC2 gear from 1987 is still the best.
Ha. Just caught some nice sun perch. Lunch. Setting up the tarp shelter in a few.
I always take an extra lighter (wet conditions), and always bright colors like yellow or red. Easier to find in the dark of thick leaves.
Owned land and a lake for 28 years. Only camped once, in the beginning. Watching your videos, I'm heading out to do some overnight in my woods. Tarp cover, small tarp to sit on,, fire, and the basic needs.
Could you do a knife/axe sharpening tutorial
My “survival” axe is my grandfather’s carpenters hatchet…. Thing is probably over 70 years old…. Still with the original hammer though its sheath has been replaced. The shovel i take when camping…. Is actually a roofing shingle rake… picture a narrow but long square tip shovel with a shorted handle … the blade of shovel has six teeth that are 90degree notches eith the edges sharpened. There is also an L shape piece of steel weld onto the back to give extra leverage. That thing will slice through roots and practically levitate rocks out of the hole for you
The 90's where the best times
Now this is the kind of simplicity that I like. Thanks Corporal !!
great video! I really appreciate the narrating and describing what you're doing in addition to visually showing how it works, makes a good follow-along basis
22:32 people that gripe about what type of hatchet you use to get the job done have never had to make do with what you have. I make purchases based on the usefulness of a product in everything I do. Not just a specific purpose.
One of the best. Keep up the good work.
Love the willingness and energy to keep pushing new and clearer mission for channel. Keep up good work!
Outstanding AF brother, the goal should always be work smarter not harder. You have shown this week after week along with thinking out of the box. Just as you said at the end of the video, if you find a better way or can combine methods you should do so. This is a great lesson in adapting to overcome shortcomings. Excellent job, can't wait until the next one.
It is always about the KISS principle, your promotion couldn't have said it better. Your instruction videos are the go to page, thank you.
OMG that is crazy AF as I agree with you that 91 to 99 were the best and I'd re-live them over and over again too!!!
