Tips for SURVIVING Road Trips with KIDS & TEENS | Mindy McKnight

This week was Spring Break for our family, so I'll show you how I prepare for for and survive family ROAD TRIPS! From how to prep your car, to what to bring, including activities and strategies to manage your kids and teens during long road trips! What tips can you add to my list? COMMENT BELOW! 👇🏻

The twins and Kamri are not home, so it was just me and Shaun with Rylan, Daxton and Paisley. We decide to take a road trip to a beach house AirBnB in Galveston, TX. There are things you should do before you leave for a road trip, and things you can do during the drive to make the trip easier. I'll give you a summary of the tips below!
Day Before the Trip:
- If traveling with pets make sure you have leash, water bowls, poop bags, and treats.
- Fill up your gas tank ahead of time and check to make sure your car is ready for the drive (tire pressure, windshield wiper fluid, oil, transmission fluid, etc)!
- Make sure you have emergency roadside and First-Aid kits/car battery jumper pack.
- Prepare the inside of the car with trash bags and other useful items.
- Before you go, make sure to take out the trash in your house and leave a few lights on!
- Charge all of your electronics the night before you leave.
Day Of and During the Trip:
- Regulate drink intake to reduce potty breaks on the road.
- Blankets and pillows are for comfort and can work as a divider between kids!
- Plan fun stops along your route to keep things interesting.
- Bring envelopes of cash for your kids to buy what they want when you stop somewhere.
- Make sure you have enough snacks to keep your energy up!
- Say a prayer before you leave!
- Take turns picking entertainment.
- Play games the whole car can participate in together.

Road trips are so fun! When I was living in AZ, my fam and I really wanted to go on a road trip to either Utah or New Mexico. Unfortunately, the pandemic started :( and since I moved to Washington, we never had that chance

Something I would HIGHLY recommend is a 10foot charger. My car only had ports at the very front so if someone needs a charge but still wanted to use your phone they could reach.
Love the idea with the photo boxes! Definitely heading to hobby lobby to secure some more of those!

Mom of two and these are all good tips. We do all of these. But we limit their screen time. We play games, listen to music, color, etc. I like the $5 idea for the gas stations.

Whenever my family plans a road trip, my mom tells us to get ready by 10 AM. That NEVER happens! 😂 I’m usually the last one to wake up, but still the first to get ready. My mom is the last one out!

I may just be late to the party but I've never noticed the transcript button under the description box. That is such an amazing feature for those that benefit from reading along. I would certainly find it helpful if it's hard to hear what someone says due to mumbling, low volume or loud background noise. Beats having to rewind the same clip & listen a bunch of times.

NY car is set up the sane way as Mindy! People say I'm crazy but I like to be prepared for e erything. When we travel I always have blankets. One kid is always cold.

I remember as a child the road trip was about taking in the scenery and not electronic entertainment. 4 hour+ drive and no electronics. Just colouring books and scenery. How times have changed.

1 important thing you forgot: medication for travelsickness..... (and if they get sick => NO screen or anything => eat, music, sleep), let them sit in front/as close to the front if possible, or take a few min stop to let them walk around
Oh and about the dog thing: walk them 3 times a day, 30min for the short ones, 2h for long walk => they learn to do their business there, no accidents/no problem adjusting to new places
