Jukka suffered from chronic insommnia. It eventually forced him to retire in 2014. He's a fabulous drummer really, great showman. Also, it's important you know that they only played this once(maybe a couple more, not sure really). They fired their lead singer(she's not on stage at for this song) a couple hours after the show, so I think they were all in a very emotional state. I keep adding to this. Jukka always had a click track running, he is the time, and he had to be spot on.

I've seen Jukka do that at other concerts, it's just what he does when he isn't needed. He hits the drums harder than most so he's probably just having a breather. I can't see it being connected to the insomnia that caused him to leave the band.

Nice review! Another thing that should be taken into consideration with the band's energy through the whole End of a Era concert. Is that they all knew that they were going to be giving Tarja her walking papers as soon as this concert is over. Even though it had gotten to the point that they (the guys in the band) all agreed that it was something that they needed to do. It doesn't mean it was a easy thing for them to do. An I'm sure they all had mixed feelings concerning the uncertain future that would leave for the band. So it is likely that Jukka had a bit of a upset stomach due to all the stress.

Keep in mind that the point of doing a cover isn't to mimick or copy or do the cover exactly like the original, it's to do your rendition of the original putting your spin or "flavor" into it, to make it sound like your song. If this rendition sounded identical to the original I wouldn't be as interested in listening to it. If I wanted to hear the original I'd pull out some old Floyd albums and listen to it. This is an outstanding cover by Nightwish... P.s. I wondered about Tuomas hands on the keyboard.
You caught Tuomas signalling to possibly Emppu, well spotted.
    Tuomas can't move...
Emppu going over to check on Jukka the drummer (who was suffering).
That is just conjecture on my part, but he looks stressed, not his normal self,
wonder if he was already suffering from chronic insomnia?
Which was the reason he stopped playing, his friend Kai taking over.
Later, you can see Emppu jumping down from the drumkit, whilst still playing.
Extra special emotionally, as Tarja was backstage,
not knowing what was to come, that look from Tuomas to Marco.

Very nice reaction & analyze! This cover is true tribute to Pink Floyd. However, you partially missed the health remarks on Jukka. It's his unique style, the crouching, the keeping his hand(s) on his bandana etc. Naturally, it is possible he had somesorta migraine also here. BUT, he has suffered from variety levels of insomnia for years. It got so bad he had to leave the active duties as a drummer in the band around 2014 (he's now feeling much better and continuing managing the financial side of NW). Another interesting health tidbit: Did you know bassist Marco had a failed polyp surgery on his vocal cord in the 90's? Yep, he got his vocal cords permanently injured in surgery, losing all of his clean falsetto range. Yet, we all can hear how Marco sings, still, over 20 yrs later after the fact. Miracle masterclass at work.
Cheers and keep on doing these!

I've seen him tweaking his bandana etc many times but not holding his head as much as he has done in this 2005 concert. Hmm, maybe @Deathveil nurse mom was onto something after all, maybe Jukka did have some heavier headache/migraine here. Dunno.
"Crouching" and "low profile hovering" behind his kit however, is definitely one of his mannerisms, example like seen here in his last performance with the band in 2016: czcams.com/video/MpZUDwbLBiU/video.html or the famous Wacken 2013 "Ghost Love Score" when he comes back from a break, sits down and soon after seen in steady crouching position: czcams.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/video.html.

For the head movement, it is pure speculation, do not take our word as gospel, its all a theory when it comes to that, as a performing musician myself some musicians might have a slight twitch of nerves but that does look like he is signalling someone, might be the cameraman, might be a signal to someone on the side of the stage or to his other bandmates, nobody knows except for the band and himself especially. It is just an analysis and theorizing, we aren't flat out saying "this happened" because we do not know ourselves. yes that is the last show before they let Tarja go and at the time of us filming this we did not know that so thank you all for that information! -Deathveil

One of the cool things about NW is that it is a band with many flavours and at times you get to understand who their influences was or are.I guess Pink Floyd is one of them and they are giving this song the NW treatment and makes the song to their own in a great way. There has been talk about their female singers but this song displays the musicianship of the band itself, though they neve go in to any extended solos or stuff like that. They are able to control their egos enough to do exactly what is the best for the song and keep the dicipline. I bet that everyone of the guys would love the idea to burst in to some 5 minute solos but they don't as it does not make the song or the concert better or the concept of the show any better. Marco is a great singer in his own right but still having a operatic singers like TArja or recently Floor gives them an extra edge to be an extra ordinary band around.

I don't agree with the way they let Tarja go, , but I don't think they could have healed their relationship at that point. They seem like they are much better people now and to have made up with her for the most part. He did do The Poet and The Pendulum at Wembley but I think the techs turned some of the vocal in his ear monitor off.

This is more a great tribute to Pink Floyd than cover including also the symbol. But are you serious about the not feeling well of Jukka? No - one has seen that yet as far as I know. Rumors say that Tarja was in a flue during this concert. Yes this is different and their own style to put it as heavier version.

Great analysis, they are an exceptional group of musicians as this cover shows. It takes some massive stones taking on a song and band the likes of Pink Floyd. There are plenty of renowned metal bands that do the occasional homage and manage to completely butcher it (Metallica' cringeworthy attempt of Hocus Pocus springs to mind).
Speaking of Focus, it would be awesome if you guys would be willing to do a reaction to the 1973 live version of prog-rock/proto metal history -) czcams.com/video/g4ouPGGLI6Q/video.html #datsweeppicking
ps. I have to agree, with your mom' assessment. Jukka' body language spells 'not feeling well' all over it.

Marco flubs a couple of lines of the lyrics, but just keeps on going like the absolute pro he is. Just replaced two lines with lines from another verse.

Jukka had a bad migraine…how the F does one play drums with a migraine!! This is a tribute to PF not a cover; a tribute overshadowing the original IMHO!

Sounds really incredible but where is the joy of playing? At least there was a good excuus but if you see the joy there is in the Wacken concert......that`s a whole different atmosphere. I love Pink Floyd as well, never seen a better concert yet than the Wall (version with Roger Waters I saw)

It's because they all knew that they were going to be giving Tarja, the band's first singer, her walking papers as soon as this concert is over. Even though it had gotten to the point that they (the guys in the band) all agreed that it was something that they needed to do. It doesn't mean it was a easy thing for them to do. An I'm sure they all had mixed feelings concerning the uncertain future that would leave for the band. So they were all more then a bit stressed out.

This is in no way a cover, most times a cover cheapens the song. This is tribute from one genious to another. An interpetation with the respect necessary. Cleaner?

    Tribute, not a cover 🙂
