- Paradox Interactive, the creators of grand strategy games such as EU4, CK3, Victoria 3, HOI4 and more, are publishing a new game, kind of like Civilisation VI or CIV 5 or CIV 6. This is Millennia, a brand new strategy game that is releasing in 2024. I figured I'd play through a game and see how we get on! Let me know your thoughts on this new strategy game!

So, uh, thoughts on the thumbnail? Not a sponsored video by the way, just thought the game looked cool and wanted to see what your impressions are!
I thought the thumbnail was pretty good. both the channel and the game is recognisable. 👍
its 4 am
It’s cool
I think the thumbnail makes you look like a race-swapped Gil Scott Heron, which I'm here for.

Ain’t no way the first town Russia creates is named Vladivostok
Tver, Vladivostok, Smolensk... Only missing Voronezh or something. No wonder they descended to raiding so quickly despite having a perfect geography this time and close to no close neighbours
@@Bzgiorno_Bzgiovanna" Truth is: the game was rigged from the start."
UKs starting city is Liverpool and USs is New York
what does this mean
@@superbooper3654 the first city for each nation (the one you start with) appears to have a set name, and that name tends to not be the capital cities name. So russia starts in vladivostock, UK starts in Liverpool and US starts in new York from what I've seen.
"We have Civ at home."
Looks like mobile civ clone pre alpha..
@@backstabber3537I mean it is sorta a beta so I doubt this is how it'll release
why does it look like its a pre-alpha build of a game coming out in 2005
Yeah lol, it looks like a browser game from 2008 or so, but maybe this is pre-pre-pre-alpha
i bet its for mobile
Civ style games all have that horrible art style for some reason
@oneofmanyjames-es1643 humankind has good artstyle tho

Bronze Age, shows a dude with an iron weapon.
*Clap* *Clap* *Clap* 16 times the details Paradox
It just works
Well people had iron weapons in bronze age. They just was really expensive and rare.
@@paprykpapryk84 Yes BUT also the knowledge & quite honestly the efficiency/possibilities of iron tools/weapons was just not worth it.
Also the Bronze Age had much more going than just "We have ze Metal now". Its just so freaking stoopid to depict warriors with clear to see iron weapons, IN THE BRONZE AGE.
People had iron weapons back then but it sucked. Same as how people still used bronze armor in the iron age.
Also King Tut had an iron knife made out of meteorite iron. There were also some native americans whom crafted stuff with meteorite iron.
So yeah the whole stone age, iron age etc. stuff is a sham. I can give more examples but i will stop.
Just speaking for myself: I'm kind of open to a new version of Civ, only what I want is a much less cartoony-looking version of the game, and one with much larger continents, where individual cities and tiles aren't as important. Something more akin to Civ II or Alpha Centauri, and this really doesn't look like it.
Yeah but the market isn’t going that way sadly, these people on’y want more money so they are making games accessible for a wider audience.
@@shonewarrior2178 But the problem is that don't always work. We have seen countless examples of games pandering to a wider audience and not satisfying anyone in the end, and many examples of games being as in depth as possible and succeed. I think there is a high demand for a PDX style 4x historical sim with the same depth as their GSG games. Sadly. Milennia doesn't seem like it
I mean, you could just play Civ V (as opposed to the cartoon fest that is Civ VI) with a large map and manually reduce the amount of Civs to create less contested space. I agree its not perfect though.
PDX stopped innovating when they went public.
try Old World
This seems like very early days still. Some neat concepts, but a ways to go.
Just need to make the screen more readable. I like the idea of armies and of regions / vassals, etc.
So like every paradox game on launch
@@chhyachhrasuwar This feels like the opposite. The mechanics here look good. Just the presentation and such is rough.

It genuinely looks fun and seems to have enough twists on the whole Civ formula to justify its existence; I'm just kinda hoping they move quickly to make the gamer look less like a mobile game ad. There are games that have charm in their art style, but the trouble here is that they haven't fully committed to the bit. If they want to do the mobile game ad art style then fair play and more power to them, but they have to fully go all in on it rather than having battles look like they are a few steps away from asking a soldier whether they want to fix the furnace or the window first while also having art that looks at home in the usual Paradox faire.
4x strategy with the US and Russia in the stone age, very cool and original
Definitely not Civilization
@@ggmoyang It gives we have Civilization at home vibes
@@RIlianPit's like civ but definitely significantly distinct, I'd say humankind is more of a sigma male civ and closer to civ then this from what we've seen
>Salvador is a barbarian settlement
Sounds about right.
Before Nayib Bukele yeah but now not so much
It's Salvador, not El Salvador
I feel like age of blood should require some razing or conquest as well. As it stands you could be building a peaceful society but if you defeat an invasion of your lands you're then locked into the age of blood if you're the one advancing the world.
Looking at 27:17 it actually seems like you can't be locked into an age, as you have to actively select the age to begin progress on it, which is a good safeguard for that
literally a paradox take on the civ series
not that I'm against it
Combat has me extremely worried, why let the player control armies when you're entirely at mercy of a mobile game combat screen. Civ lets you get flanking bonuses, you can hide behind terrain to stop ranged units from reaching you within their normal range, terrain bonuses/penalties. Humankind takes these basic principles, adds some more and makes battles take place in their own confined "arenas". Battles use the terrain of the region the fight takes place in, letting you use those tools in another manner. I understand wanting to stand out from other 4x games but to reduce combat to this doesn't sit right with me.
It's also getting annoying fast to watch it, played the Demo on steam earlier. Looks seriously half-baked as a game.
@@HDreamerthat's a paradox game tho, it'll release 40,000 dlc and be the best game of its kind
I know, you also recognise it as a Paradox game, by the UI being annoyingly unintuitive. Despite a Tutorial popping up every turn, I took forever to find some stuff.@@Jiub_SN
Always excited for a new Laith video!
26:49 "I guess if there's gonna be an age of heroes, we're gonna be the villains in the story" -Laith
yay i cant wait for a half-assed game with content taken out of it to be released as ''DLC'' , the usual paradox business model.
Don't worry, 10 years from now you can sign up for a 20 dollar monthly subscription to unlock 2000 dollars of DLC and enjoy a mostly complete game :D
Youre really complaining about that when this is their take on Civ? Also, if you really think Paradox takes out features to implement them later, then you must have never had a real job before.
Seriously, any time a game company wants to make a little bit of money on a game, y'all complain. Would you rather Paradox release EU 2020, 2021, 2022, etc., or perhaps you'd prefer lootboxes in Paradox games.
Like, paradox releases full new features to games and charges a one time $20 price, at most. Alongside a free patch. Reminder that the main complaint about Imperator: Rome is that they haven't released updates or dlc.
Ill be the first to admit I dont agree with every decision Paradox makes, but fuck, can they ever win?
@@brutusthebear9050 "little bit of money" oh how could the multi billion dollar corporation survive, keep accepting their greedy ways of trying to milk customers see how that works out, they abandoned imperator because people didnt buy into that shit show and the people said no we are not going to buy this unfinished sad excuse of a game so paradox abandoned it because they couldnt milk people as usual.
@almahsiri6440 Yeah, thats a poor excuse. You know that they have employees right? And that a company being "worth" any amount of money means nothing. No you probably don't know that, cause you're some kid upset that you can't get gimmedats.

They should remove the combat window, adds nothing to the game, slows down the round, and wouldn't change anything, if combat is fast calculated on the map.
Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece if Im not mistaken so you were *technically* sorta close!
There are some aspects I like. I feel the battle screen is a little dated looking, but the production line, selecting and upgrading the unique units, and the ages system is really promising and something CIV should do. I just feel the whole thing lacks that "modern" look.
Looks like a game from 2008
Agreed. The systems are cool, but my God, this is not a game for 2024.
@@ryanwallace1511why not? What in particular bothers you other than the battles?
@Jiub_SN I am not a big fan of the art style of the game. It looks "dry." The battle screen is a cool concept, but it looks cartoony and poorly rendered. The flags don't really match the countries that well. But, I will say that the age system and the unit progression is really cool. The mana points and town mechanic is also neat. I just think that this game might fall short to Aria, but is slightly better than Humankind, but even then, Humankind had way better art style. It could just be a personal preference.
Laith having Roman empire experience with constant rebellion and crisis
Nice. Holy, this is the first Millenia Lets play
this has a lot of potential..there is cool mechanics in this like the undo button and having units far away go back to the capitol in 1 turn...
but it is in early alpha phase...the big reason is it is are pc resource hog and will make your very good graphics card run harder than it should..needs some performance bugs fixed and it is very bare bones with content other than the new mechanics...
ill check this game out in a few years after it comes out after some mods and dlcs come out...ill sub on the xpan for 5 a month and give it a go for a month...easy peezy and cheap and best experience for sure...
its too bad game delevopers are so greedy they make games 25% complete just to make a buck faster...but not with me nah they gta make the product good before i even contiplate paying for that

So this is basicly Civilization but Paradox. Nice.

I love how Laith keeps finding things only for the Americans to immediately claim it as there’s lol
so this is basically paradox's version of civ
John Paradox's Civilization?
Ahh, the ancient civilization of USA, they developed... Nukes.
It does seem fairly jarring to have such a modern country available at launch
Zanny ass title for a video, Laith!
Mom can we have civ. No we have civ at home
Laith playing a Civ clone?! Who does he think he is? Potato McWhiskey?
More like Meat-pie Mc... No whiskey?
crying much?
For me its very ridiculous when in 10 millenium BC United States, Russia and other exists. I’d prefer if at start it is narrative indo-aryan tribe, then slavic confederation and then Russia or other slavic nation with variability on each step.
Some civ-style games have tried that but it doesn't seem to work very well
For me the fact that irl counties exist all the time along with other things that completely ruin the immersion (like the fact that in the game they all exist in this hexagonal world for some reasons and I have to pretend that this is normal) is the reason why I don't like Civ at all. I think Polytopia deals with it in a good way by offering you tribes which are heavily inspired by irl countries, but are different nonetheless, so the immersion kinda stays
So Laith is the Nostalgia Critic of Paradox games?
Wet Laith new favorite Laith?
If Civ VI were a mobile game...
They're going to Imperator it again, aren't they?
I mean Civ 6 kind of is, they ported it to the App Store.
But it’s still just civ vi ported to mobile, unlike this which is uhhh…. Actual mobile civ
Ok, now you can change the resolution from 200x100 to a newer one...
Instant impression 10 seconds in is "this is swedish civ"
What the hell? This game looks underbaked as hell. This makes Humankind look like a masterpiece. This is literally Civ 4. If this is supposed to be released this year, then this will be a major flop.
Come on don't disrepect Nafplio like that, it was the first capital of the modern independent Greek state
Paradox version of CIV
Looks like a mobile game
It’s sorta like civ 6( I just watched the first two minutes so I could be wrong) if civ6 was on steroids and you need a big brain to play
looking forward to playing it and recording it myself
I played 2 hours of it and just didn't have a good experience. I had high hopes for this game.
Sip Mayo's Society

I would say the game looks like crap but I was on the other side of the fence when Vic3 came out so I hope it succeds eventually.

Laith commentary - spot on /// Paradox creating a civilization clone so similar that there will be lawsuits - spot on
Day 35 asking for a Mega Campaign with Koifish
So it's civ?
So, every video I've seen on Millennia has entailed raiders. It must be because they're so fun and balanced.
I guess the "combat window" is to show something new other similar games don't have but it feels pointless to be in there, unless you can do something within it to decide combat outcome, its just wasted time, heck civ even has an animation toggle altogether, its simply not part of the experience imho, feels really forced in there so you don't think you're playing civ/old world but meh extra bloat imho.
paradox is evolving just backwards
Woe, knockoff Civilization be upon ye
Was this game made in 10000 BCE?
is this just civilization 5
Why would I play this when I have civ5?
This seems to have learned to not do 1unit-per tile on mostly flat terrain bullshit, but i am worried anyways about the issue below:
if (this has a 1-unit per tile limit (and army-mergers or reinforcement mechanics are a too late option)) and if (terrain is mostly flat unlike in humankind) and if (mos basic city-defense against many archers is a too late technology, unlike in Humankind), spamming early ranged units (and literally building nothing else at all, besides 3 melee units to capture defeated cities), then likely...
This game would just be a dumb and extremely imbalanced game like civ 5+6.
now those are 3-big-if and 2 may already ruin the gamer balancing beyond repair...
Can anyone please test if only building early archers to mass capture cities from the start is just as op in this game as in civ5+6 ?
Uh, this game... Quo Vadis Paradox...
Don't listen to the haters the long hair is epic! U A BADDIE
i am honest here, if they just remove the battle view i would buy this game but this one thing is so ugly i dont know ... just REMOVING it and having autofight would make this game better i feel
I see mixed reviews of the game in the comments, but all the negative reviews are about how the game looks. If the gameplay is good, does the game’s appearance really matter?
Depends on the price. Right now its a $10 mobile game.
No, it really doesn't, appearance is always secondary to gameplay, always
to me yes. it just isnt finished. the animations are terrible too. why not play civ 2 then ?
Laith I have a suggestion .when you play Imperator come can you do like url playing come as 5-10 people as senators and everybody needs to agree for something.
That seriously looks like a Civ-like game, lets see what they do with it. I'm not that impressed yet, but that can change depending on the game mechanics. Also love Laith once again goes for a raiding nation, gotta continue his streak.
Edit: His hair looks like a wet poodle today, but I dig it. 😆

This game looks more like 2010 not 2023 xD
I'm keeping an eye on this one, because I'm hoping that this title won't be another woke trash-fest in the late game. I've watched several content creators play this, and I see different aspects of your tech-tree-influenced decisions demonstrated in almost every video, which is refreshing. I'm really tempted to buy this in pre-release, but I've learned over the years that that isn't a sound practice, so I'll just keep viewing content about it just to see. Good play-through by the way, you embraced the spirit of digital warfare as it is supposed to be, conquer all until there is peace.
theyre copying a game 14 years old and i don't imagine them making it seem 2024
Don't copy your friends homework:
I left playing these civilization genre games due to their horrible historical accuracy, and bronze age being reached in the 7th millenium BC is a bit of a joke.
