Hi there ....I found you beginning of covid, and I got busy and made hundreds of these caps ..at that time the only fabric I could buy was bed sheets ...it worked great..and now a few years later I'm still making them for medical workers...and if I forget I just look u up again..and get started....thank you for posting this.
Once again the ICU nurse teaches the ER nurse something useful. I love the way you teach! You must be a much-requested preceptor. You always told us WHY we should or shouldn't do something. I loved wearing my little cap yesterday. I don't have much hair so I will be using less elastic and not adding the 1" next time. Another nurse I work with suggested using a hair tie if you run out of elastic. I used an edger foot to keep my elastic pushed out of the way. I also sewed from the end to my zigzag and then stopped to check that I didn't catch the elastic. I began again after the zigzag. I'm sure it looks nicer and is much quicker the way you did it, but that slight change accommodated for my beginner sewing skills. LOVE. THIS! Thank you and stay safe.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEO! Making caps for respiratory therapists who aren't being given PPE and trying to accommodate long hair and long days, this cap is perfect but I couldnt envision it in process. Thank you!
Thank you for this great tutorial. Like many people, I am a visual learner and you do a fantastic job demonstrating. Am making caps for health workers for Canada Sews and this pattern can be made up in good time and with a minimal amount of supplies and fabric. Your efforts are very much appreciated!
Best tutorial I've seen for this yet! And the best and easiest to use design also. Bias tape and all those ties are for the birds and are not fabric efficient. THANK YOU!
It looks so large. Before I attach the cap to the sides, i run a basting stitch along the rounder part of the cap. Easing this really helps to attach both pieces easily. Thank you for a good tutorial.
Thank you soo much for sharing! I couldn’t quite grasp all of the written instructions. Your demo was great! My hat came out perfect, it is so much better than what I had. This was perfect for us ‘visual’ learners. Thanks again and stay safe as we all fight the virus!
Thank you so much Krista ! Ihave made many facemasks and wanted to make a scrub hat for my granddaughter, who is a home health nurse, to cover her hair and my nice who is ICU nurse like you. Thank you so very much !!
Thank You! Best video for us amateur sewers. I made 2 of these for my RN neighbor yesterday, she called this morning to praise the fit of your hats. Not too tight and I used 100% cotton which I guess is light weight and more comfortable. They are asking for more more more. God Help me I’m not the fastest but I’ve got all the time in the world. 😬
Shaydock So awesome :) Glad it worked out. And I bet they really appreciate them!! Just remember to prewash your fabric so they don’t shrink!! :) Pro tip!!
krista wright I didn’t ask but since her unit is no longer allowing fabric masks over their N95s due to cross contamination I’m assuming their hats need to be tossed at the end of their shift. It’s ok I don’t mind better Safe then sorry. She’s working directly with COVID patients and if I can make 2 nurses a little more comfortable each night them I’m happy to continue. I spoke to her tonight, my heart breaks for our healthcare workers. Thank You!!
Oh that’s too bad! We still have bouffants to put over our scrub caps. But when I take mine off, I put them in biohazard bags and then dump them in the wash.
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial, I liked the pattern but the written instructions made no sense to me. By the way - sewing in the elastic seemed just ridiculously fiddly, so I just sewed the entire thing without the elastic. Then at the end, I used a hemostat to tuck the elastic in, then pinned and sewed. Vastly easier, and allows for fit-testing! Thanks again!
Thank you for this tutorial. Like others I was totally confused by the written instructions and you made it all make sense. Thank you also for the adjustments that made it fit together better. Your video made my day so thanks again! Happy sewing!
Thank you so much for this! I read the instructions and was like ??? I am very visual. I am also an RN. I am now in Care Transitions so I can't work on the floor to relieve my friends. This is my way to help them. It has given me great joy to be able to help out.
Thanks so much for this tutorial... so easy to follow even though I am an experienced seamstress. And what a great way to support those in our family who are on the "front lines"!. One tip from me: I sewed the tail of the top piece as a casing and then threaded the elastic through it before attaching to the second side of the brim. It is a little tricky to be sure the elastic was straight since both sides are folded up eventually, but I found it way easier than trying to close the fabric around the elastic at the end.
Alice Bourdon hey!!! That’s a great idea...although you have to then flip the band up on the front to sew that faux band. Just means you have to fiddle with the elastic in the top A rectangle. If you don’t flip the band up that second time, the hat tends to be too long at the front and goes over your eyes! :) I figured out after that if you sew the rectangle ‘casing’ from the back and just start it off with the elastic not stretched...it’s much easier!!! Wish I would have done that in the tutorial!
@@77kristalynn This is how I did it too, sewing from the back and starting with it not stretched. I also used a slightly smaller width of elastic, which made it SO easy to avoid stitching top of it.
Thank you SO much for your work in making this video + in being on the front lines. You are appreciated! I hadn’t watched the video before I cut fabric so I added an extra inch of elastic instead. It fit snugly around my bun so if anyone here is worried, there’s your fix!
I hate it when the bobbin runs out. It’s always in the most inconvenient moment. Thanks for the video. I just sewed this pattern myself and love how simple it looks. Once I figured out how it was all put together it was pretty similar to some of the other caps with ponytail holders without having to deal with the ribbons. I notched the center point of both pieces which made it easier to line up when sewing the top to the sides. I wish I would have watched your video before making this. I used the rolled hem foot to keep the stitch close to the edge without feeding it through as a rolled hem. That helped keep it consistent. I didn’t fold it up as I prefer a looser fit, having curly hair.
Thank you SO much! I just love your video. It was so easy to follow and your extra tips were awesome! I've had a seam gauge forever and never knew what it was LOL. The hat came out perfect!
Thank you soooooo much for making this video. I was a little nervous to mess up the elastic casing. But your instructions are great and my hat came out perfect.
Thank you so much for this video! I hard a hard time following the original written instructions and ended up searching for videos and found this! I should have done this earlier instead of trying to figure out the written instructions and ended up throwing away my fabric :( Your directions were easy to follow and now i have a cap! Next is matching mask and then i can sleep! TYVM!
Wonderful tutorial. When my local library re-opens I will print out the pattern. Fabric shops will probably be re-stocked with elastic. I know it'll be late for the pandemic, but maybe health care providers will still like these later in the year. Thank you!
Thank you - super helpful tips for me as a beginner! I also added buttons to where the top of the ears would be to rest the mask loops and goggle arms to help unload weight on the ears :)
Very clear and helpful, thanks so much! And your feline helper was also a delight :) Thanks so much for the work you do in the ICU, best wishes from Manitoba!
i love the tutorial....i got one suggestion; for that 3/4" seam; for the flap piece, instead of sewing it "blindly" from the right side of the piece; turn over and sew it from the inside of the hat so you can see where to sew ; be easier to catch the edge as you hold it and stretch the elastic...
Thank you so much for the video! I tried to follow the instructions from the site I found the pattern on but I guess I'm too visual a learner. Thank you again!
HAHAHAHAHA the cat! Lmao! Typical kitteh, glamour shots and then take over the super cute (owl?) Fabric. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I too am visual. I believe this is the pattern I printed and downloaded. Thank you for what you do as well at work. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, but the sentiment remains. Be abundantly blessed, be safe, and please give kitteh a tummy rubs from me 😍😏😸🐾🐾🐾
You should've said, "Now, we're going to remove the cat from the ironing board." I absent-mindedly listen to sewing videos while I'm cooking in order to decide if it's a project I want to tackle...that made me stop, rewind, and watch. "Cat? Did she say remove the cat? I know ironing ham, but what's an ironing cat?" Hahahahaha!
Thank you so much, I just read the written instructions and I would never have followed them. I made one for my son who is a RN in ICU. I will make more once he lets me know if it fits him. Thanks again
I wouldn't trust myself to not catch that elastic, so I'd make the whole casing first, then insert the elastic, and then tack it in at either end. It'd be a lot easier for a beginner, like me.
Great instruction video. I wish the band would not need to be turned at the end because I feel it is to narrow and if not a careful sewer the wrong side of the material could be seen. Also the back section for the elastic could of been sewn while sewing the rest of the casing. That is what I did to keep from stretching the elastic as the last step. Thanks.
Tyler Ruetz hey!! So it needs to be kind of specific to the person. Just how they like their mask to sit. You could always put it on and find where your ears are, kind of top of the ear would be best I think. Should probably work for most people. I’ve only had to wear N95s thus far so I’m not too sure. Those have straps behind your head. :) sorry I can’t be of more help!
The video is greatly appreciated. I need to figure out how exactly when joining top to the bottom piece the 1/4” turn ins line up when you sew the 1/4” all around. Couldn’t tell by the video. Thanks a bunch.
N W Hello!! So I think you’re talking about joining the band to the top piece....you attach the band just to the circle of piece A. The rectangle should remain free. It’s a little tricky...you kind of have to pull both pieces to get it to line up. Hopefully that answers your question!! :)
krista wright Awe Krista, you are a sweetheart. Thankyou very much for your prompt reply. Will work on those two ends again. I’m sure by the second or third try I will have it down pat. It’s called the aging process. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! The hats fits so well. Have you ever added a contrasting band for the hats? If so, what is your preferred method?
I am having trouble the two ends joining up when penned,( For the band) these caps where giving to me already cut I guess the person that cut them out gave up on them . The doctor clinic ask me to sew them
Since you’re a nurse, what do u think about using a rib knit fabric for the banding and still putting a 5” piece of elastic at the back of the banding. I’m a seamstress and it would be a lot faster to get these sewn up and I have a lot of rib knit in my stash.
Diane W hey Diane!! I’m not sure!! It’s a good idea though!!! I’d be interested to see it :) There are a couple really good patterns on Etsy, look similar to this but have one continuous piece as the band. That might work better?? Sorry I can’t help more!
Why not just do the elastic step last instead of working around it? So, normally, you'd sew in your elastic, then sew down the fabric around the whole hat. Instead, skip the 4 inches or whatever, sew the band, flip the band over to the outside (one of last steps) sew around again. Sew that flap from the top piece with the gap for elastic. THEN, sew down your elastic, thread it through the top piece, sew on the other side and then sew down your top stitching (that's now on the bottom.) It seems like a lot of grief dealing with whether or not you've missed the elastic can be avoided if you save it as your last step instead of one of your first.
Your tutorial on the Hummingbird scrub hat is great. Do you have one for the Whale Watching scrub hat as well? I'm interested in making that one, with the ties in the back. Thank you.
I liked the look of this. I didn't add the extra as you did and its huge, I mean huge on me. Perhaps I don't have as much hair or a smaller head but.....I do like the style though
This is great. Problem is the pattern won’t print out. So we can’t make these. I have a request from a nurse but I don’t know measurements. Can you help.
Jan Pearson hey!! Sorry! It downloads right to google docs on my phone...so I’m not sure how to help you. As for dimensions...oval that is 10 inches across, 10.5 inches up and down with a rectangle at the bottom that is 3 inches up and down and 6 inches across. The band piece is 12.5 inches long (without the extra 1/2 inch I add in), 6.5 inches at its widest, down to 4 inches at its smallest width. Sorry I just came off a 12 hour shift. That’s all I’ve got.
@@77kristalynn Those dimensions help a lot as the band piece didn't print where to attach to dotted line. I had to add about a quarter inch of paper in between the two pieces. Thank you so much! Making for my daughter, also a nurse in a city hospital. Stay safe!!!!
Awesome video. And camera person. You two work great together..the bobbin extra was good..now I have ole eyes was the needle threader an extra buy or did it come with your machine ???? I need one of them.
I have a question and I hope it is it a dumb one. The download for these patterns, does it already reflect the half-inch you added to your pattern or do I need to add the half-inch when I cut this piece out for the band? Thanks so much for this good pattern
Annette Burke Hello!!! Good question!! I added it to the pattern piece. I wonder if there is an inch that gets cut off when printing. The pieces fit together much better!!
So, do you think the last part about sewing around the fake headband part is super necessary? I’m just wondering what would happen if I didn’t do that is all...anyone not do it?
Hi there ....I found you beginning of covid, and I got busy and made hundreds of these caps ..at that time the only fabric I could buy was bed sheets ...it worked great..and now a few years later I'm still making them for medical workers...and if I forget I just look u up again..and get started....thank you for posting this.

When you sew it use a bigger seam allowance around the circle.

Instead, skip the 4 inches or whatever, sew the band, flip the band over to the outside (one of last steps) sew around again. Sew that flap from the top piece with the gap for elastic. THEN, sew down your elastic, thread it through the top piece, sew on the other side and then sew down your top stitching (that's now on the bottom.)
It seems like a lot of grief dealing with whether or not you've missed the elastic can be avoided if you save it as your last step instead of one of your first.
Super-helpful, thank you!
Having problem printing the pattern. I like this one coz it’s using less fabric from others that I did.
Wonderful!! Yes I do say in the video to add a half inch to the band piece. It doesn’t quite fit right without it. :)
Awesome video. And camera person. You two work great together..the bobbin extra was good..now I have ole eyes was the needle threader an extra buy or did it come with your machine ???? I need one of them.
barbara west hehe!! Thank you!! The cat making an appearance was super cute. That comes on the Janome :) so nice eh!!
Would you please state measurements for each pattern piece. Unable to print this pattern.
Does any one have the pattern to share?
How do I get to download the pattern please?
I have a question and I hope it is it a dumb one. The download for these patterns, does it already reflect the half-inch you added to your pattern or do I need to add the half-inch when I cut this piece out for the band? Thanks so much for this good pattern
Annette Burke Hello!!! Good question!! I added it to the pattern piece. I wonder if there is an inch that gets cut off when printing. The pieces fit together much better!!
Could this be lined with satin inside?
Amei
I don't see the measurements of each piece, am I missing it?
So, do you think the last part about sewing around the fake headband part is super necessary? I’m just wondering what would happen if I didn’t do that is all...anyone not do it?
Kaci Baker Hey! It personally makes the hat too long and goes into my eyes if you don’t complete that step. :)
krista wright thanks! I was just trying to be lazy, thank you for the video! It helps alot

Connie Morrison 5 inches. I say it at minute 7:38 in the video. She also tells you that in the pattern :)
