How I Alter My Patterns to Fit Better

  • This is a tutorial on how I edit my sewing patterns to fit better.
I break it down into 3 manageable steps to follow. First, i identify the problems. See and feel what's wrong. Second, trial and error. I try making adjustments. Even if they don't work, that's okay, I'm learning. Finally, once I'm on the right path, it's about tweaking and dialling it in.
I use one of my older shirt projects as an example of how to go about customizing it to fit just as I want it to. My aim is to demonstrate that although it's time consuming, it is approachable.
    You got this!

I just spent two days on a coat pattern, I stopped after the second mock-up feeling like I didn’t know what I was doing. It’s reassuring to see that chaos is a technic! I’m here for it, thanks

I feel the same way. I get frustrated when I encounter issues with a garment I'm making, and it makes me want to give up. But whenever I watch one of Cornelius' videos, I'm less frustrated because I recognize that chaos with sewing projects is just part of the process and I just need to trudge on... and 'tweak alot'.

Wow, this might be the first video that I have watched that has been real about the process of garment sewing. Most videos make it look so easy that it is no wonder many of us get so frustrated with the process (because we start to believe that WE cannot do it if it is not right after the 3rd attempt) that we hang it up. Your explanation with patience and humor was so good. You are a gift to the sewing community and I am joining to learn more from you! BTW, yes, I would love to see a more personal video about your journey in life so far. Thank you!

      "Tweak A LOT."😂
Honestly, this resolved the frustration I often feel when I don't get the right fit after the first fit.
Some of the issues you showed in your shirt has been addressed in basic female bodice drafting by Natalie Bray - the bubble at the back neck etc. I guess male clothing patterns are drafted differently from female ones.

I’m so grateful that you made this tutorial. An old injury causes my right shoulder to drop and sit forward, which means that off the rack clothing sits funny and feels uncomfortable to me. I also have numbness and tremors in my right hand. I’ve been wanting to sew my own clothing, but I worry about how to modify patterns to accommodate my needs and also whether or not my hands will even let me sew anymore. You are an inspiration to me to not let my body hold me back from pursuing this craft again. Thank you for making this (and all) of your videos! ❤

Another great video. Your awareness of your body and how your garments should fit is inspiring. I remember a video you did 2-years ago where you were drafting either a shirt or bomber jacket pattern for yourself and even then, your keen awareness of how your pattern would need to be altered to achieve a better fit for your specific body was insightful.

Hi, I'm a young professional pattern maker! From experience, many of the fit issues you faced in this video have a "known" origin (like those pulling lines being a sign for the sleeve cap not being high enough). I find it helpful to have one of those old-fashioned sewing books made for home seamstresses: they have a very rich amount of data on fitting and altering ! I have read mine once from back to back and learned many fitting tips. Also I just know to go and look when I have trouble I don't know how to solve like that.
Thanks for the amazing and educative videos!

Recently, I got a life altering, physically changing diagnosis of Graves’ disease. All the clothes I’ve made so far, since I’ve been treated, I can’t wear anymore 😭. The medications slow the thyroid down to hopefully normal, but make me gain weight, no matter how little I eat. I’m so deflated knowing that if I make clothes to fit now, those clothes will have to go into the pile of clothes I can’t wear. Ugh. Also, as a result of all this medical testing, I’m broke so I can’t buy more fabric to keep making clothes if the clothes won’t fit me anymore. I know it’s a lot easier to alter clothes from bigger to small but not smaller to bigger. I don’t know what to do now.
