Steve Guttenberg Q&A session with the San Francisco Audiophile Society

- Steve Guttenberg is the prolific creator of the Audiophiliac CZcams channel, which currently has over 150,000 subscribers. Previously, Steve wrote the Audiophiliac blog for CNET.com. He has written for The Absolute Sound, Stereophile, and many other audio publications.
Steve also worked for Chesky Records as an Associate Producer.
This session was entirely devoted to Q&As from SFAS members and Steve graciously continued fielding questions after his intended time slot had ended.

Steve hit it on the nose, 10/10 when he said, "The review is only valuable when the viewer develops his relationship with the reviewer over time," so beutifully and simply said!!! That is, after listening to Steve's, Sean, Thabarma, Ron, John, Andrew, Thomas' Review, and you go out and buy those reviewed products and then gauge it for yourself. And if their descriptions matches what you've experienced, then the product review is valuable. And over time THAT REVIEWER is trusted and valued. That's absolutely true for me, and I believe also for many audiophiles.
For me, in terms of hierarchy, top of my trustworthy and accurate list of reviewers is Sean, Steve, Thabarma, Thomas, Andrew and John. And it's a "relationship" we've develop over time. I value John's knowledge, but his products are usually out of my budget. Same can be said for Thomas, some of his products are in the Gate's, Buffet's and Bezo's level (exaggerated)! Steve's reviews are fresh, wide-ranging. Sean's is more focused and clear, so it really helps me to buy--or not.
Thanks for this, extremely interesting. Steve is a true legend, I love his sense of humor and his intelligence, he has a great take on things. He’s a cornerstone of the audio world.
I don't know if I call myself an audiophile but I couldn't stop watching this video well past my bedtime.

I really enjoyed this segment. I somewhat agree with Steve's point about George Harrison did not hear what he recorded.Back in the day when I was a young man I was in a local stereo shop.Wall to wall equipment. I Don't recall what the speakers were behind me but al of a sudden Lou Rawls was there singing right behind me.It was then I realized that I was an a AUDIOPHILE!!! Back in the day it was all tube gear.I never could afford them.But I bought NAD receiver in 1990..and it has been my workhorse with a Bang and Olfsen turntable and Cerwin Vega floor standing speakers.They have 18 inch speakers, horn loaded.It has been a pleasure to listening this for the last 35..40 years.So thank you for this conversation..love it.Keep up the good work Steve Guttenberg !!!!!

The closest I got to an ultimate truth was visiting a friend after he retired from Armstrong Studio (largest in Australia). He had their Tannoy Arderns that they replaced and we listened to some tapes he’d engineered starting with a reworking of Up, Up and Away he made for the TAA airline and some tracks that ended up on one of Leo Kottke’s records. These were tapes dubbed direct from the master tapes, so pretty damn good. Even now I still have to control myself I’m so tempted to purchase the newly re-engineered Arderns. I don’t really need them; what I have are really good. I will almost certainly have a pair of Voigt pipes made to run a pair of full-range Tang Band drivers to satisfy my curiosity and they will cost me about 10% of what the Arderns would. Back in the 1970s and 80s I almost always had home-made speakers.
I am a Chicago Audiophile but San Fran dreaming. Spending hours listening to SFAS Q&A sessions with EveAnna, Herb and many other characters and geniuses. Enjoyable and insightful into Steve's Audiophile and musical world. Steve's knowledge, passion and enthusiasm is infectious and is the reason of his success. Good Entertainment! Thankyou SFAS.

For the first time the penny dropped regarding my enjoyment of your reviews Steve. You’re focussed on what’s _interesting_ about products and that’s just so important to the overall experience of _enjoying_ the music. Most reviews/reviewers leave me cold and I spent a lot of time measuring back in the 1970s when we used to liberate the gear from the local university on weekends to measure speakers I’d built, amps my wealthy audiophile friends had bought, etc.

Thank you Steve and the gent from SFAS that recommended the floor decoupling device for speakers on a slab floor. I have a ground floor listening room 20x25 with 20" concrete floor that rests on 50 foot piles to granite. My house is on the side of a cliff by a river with loose soil so it has to sit on piles. I thought there would be no vibration in the massive concrete structure. Today, I put some dense foam packing material about 3/4 inch thick under the castors of the speakers. The speakers are large and easily 200 pounds. The floor has wall to wall carpeting, so I put the decoupling material between the castors and the carpet.
Massive improvement in sound. The bass is now really fast and clean. An already good image just came to life. Bass is really clean and clear. And much more present. Its like I added a good sub. Even measuring the frequency spectrum in the listening chair it is obviously cleaner and more extended into the lower octaves. It is actually one of those listen to everything again as some muddling of the sound is removed.

I used to do the same experiments with radio static when I was a kid, what an amazing memory and coincidence that Steve did this too.
An interest in Classical music is a great gift for an Audiophile.
Really interesting point about the attraction to high end audio is the personal connection with the passion of the founders. Many of us value knowing Nelson Pass or Shawn at Dru or even Dave Slagle who winds transformers. It is similar in the super/hyper car world. In the early days, Ferrari and Lamborghini were characters. Now, Horacio Pagani shows up at car meets in California. Christian von Koenigsegg is an icon who comes and spends time with enthusiasts and talks about his passion for innovation. And similar to high end audio, the influencers are less magazines like road and track and much more focused on young CZcamsrs like Tim Burton at Shmee150.

Guess Steve because I have my setup for 25 years . In same shared living room. 17 wide 28’ long , divided by an alcove The room to all sound great, I have Dual TT for 50 years. A year ago I discovered Grace Cartridges . But 2 things have changed in audio : price of vinyl sky rocketed, and audio gear prices have Just passed the mark only for the 2%. to buy. Prices of homes moved on my street to over $ 4,000,000 each. I do not have any of your vast experience. All I know is my setup amazes me daily. Digital sounds great , vinyl is better. Horns are to my ears are wonderful. BestRegards and thank you

I guess after this podcast I'm a Audiophile, I can sit and listen for a hr or more and just listen. 👍 I had a horrible livingroom for acoustics, 10ft ceiling, 3ft from left speaker then 30ft to the right wall, L shaped into kitchen. I had to use alot of acoustic panels. Sound better but need to do back wall & ceiling.

Good/Great audio was the first "thing" to really go esoteric in the entertainment era. The post industrial suburban era.
If back in the 70s during the receiver wars we also had SACD, wireless ear buds, OLED big screens, 4K Blu-ray, high frame rate video games, PCs, hand held pieces of glass that make phone calls, take photos, and engage an endless INTERNET....there would be NOTHING close to what is now called an audiophile.
The laws of dilution say so.
Let's face it.
The AV club in elementary school were the nerds that liked to set up the projectors and the many wired connections to make music or movies etc etc. And it was Hi-Fi that really took a firm hold of those enthusiasts "back in the day". Because there were no real alternatives beyond model rocketry and metal detecting. 😊

I design my own speakers and I have a multiple layer cabinet system that I came up with and I don't know anyone who does anything like mine. The out layer I have been using solid oak and maple. The crossovers are high end components and crossover are all top notch. Big companies can't make a speaker like the way I do because it's not practical. But I spend a fraction of the price as buying a big name speaker made in China
The thing about Schiit is that the product I want to buy is only available in silver. My entire system is black and I refuse to add one silver component. They sell other components in black or silver. What’s the deal?
I like to listen to acoustic instruments. I aim to reproduce the sound.

Treat the listener not the room . When room treatments are not an option because you LIVE in one room then learn to treat the listener .
rooms have finite potential , but levels of consciousness have no limitations . learn how to increase sensitivity , joy and appreciation and ones external circumstance becomes irrelevant . The listener has infinite potential , a room does not.
most music lovers won't admit to being audiophiles because of the high percentage of jerks in the audiophile community
the problem with the reviewing process is that the reviewer often doesn't get to live with the product for a long enough period to formulate a significant opinion; my view is it takes months of listening to truly appreciate a component
i still wear my watch that i got in 1968.....a modern quart would probably keep better time but it wouldn't last as long
This guy actually knows some things about sound , its probably his Studio work that is behind that , lots of so called "Audiophiles " talk gibberish that i as a producer knowing electronics as well cant understand , so esoteric stuff no one can understand . Tho truth be told hes kind a limited in the Music genre department , i never could understand that because i dont listen that kind of music , i grew up on Drum and Bass , but i also listen all kind of stuff

I think you're right. The "Nerd" thing tends to stick. Conjures up visions of engineering students with high water pants, plastic pocket liners and slide rules. (Old School)
That said, maybe people just resist being labeled. I was talking to an old friend who I knew to be a straight Democrat ticket voter. When I referred to him as a Democrat, he corrected me and said he was an Independent. I said Independents tend to vote all over the ballot. When was the last time you voted Republican? Deafening silene from my friend. Heh. Still don't know what the was about. Heh.
Music doesn't do it for me but I love movies and their soundtracks (in movie).

Since the late 60s I have only listened to music without multi-tasking. To me It seems odd to do other things while listening. I am a prog keyboardist. I guess Im an audiophile even though I havent spent more than $900.00 on any one piece of gear. None of you are audiophiles unless you learn to play an instrument and understand that relationship first.
sometimes when i hear you guys talk, seems like you forget young people nowadays can't afford a car, much less an apartment in any city. Some of us we get a decent sound system, cause it's something important on our lifes, but, people pay their netflix, iphones, verizon fees, internet at home fees, flat tv's electric motorbike, teslas and what not, no wonder audiophiles is not like before, Iit can't be. 70's the stereo was everything, no playstation, no internet, no tv almost, no nothing. 2020 now.

its a very expensive addiction. wonderful cheap gear is such baloney. a child or teen like cheap but when they have the money and once hooked with a good system old audio nerds cant go back to cheap gear. they might want to but they cant.
