On the one hand R gets to utilized the convenient timing of a Ukr offensive to provide plausibly to a Ukr attack, on the other Ukr risks a nuclear disaster that would destroy the very territory they wish to regain and much much more depending on the prevailing winds (Europe or Russia). It supplies power to the entire region which is needed by both sides, and water to Crimea. If you're loosing and you know you're going to loose though (Russia) then this might be a good move for them from a PR standpoint, and provide excuses for leaving if they're forced to. Other then the obvious destruction to the cities and danger to the Zaporizhia NPP. 1: This makes the water canals that feed Kryvyi Rih, Crimean canal, and Kakhovsy canal unusable. 2: This makes the Dnipro river impossible to navigate with large ships. 3: Unimaginable destruction to the wild life habit arround the lower Dniper river. When Louis XIV heard about it he was furious, he insisted they were returned to England along with a letter apologizing and including the phrase "France is at war with Britain, not with Humanity." Cattle drowned. And tons of turbine oil spilled down the river, creating a blanket over the water that will not permit oxygen to reach underwater life and that will not go anywhere, suffocating everything.

There are 2 million Crimeans that will have to relocate now. But, right now there's 300,000 in Kherson... hope they even have a chance to get out. That dam was there for a while and a lot of things depend on it. This is bad.

      * Soon after capturing the Kakhovka Dam, Russia planted demolition charges on the dam to thwarted possible recapture by Ukraine.
      * Nov-22, Russia dropped the lake water level to the lowest in decades to flood the Kherson Dnieper area and thwart a possible crossing by Ukraine eastward.
      * Feb-23 - Crimean canals and reservoirs were topped off and civilians told to evacuate to Russia.
May-23 - Lake water level was raised to dangerously high levels so that water overflowed the dam, creating widespread upstream flooding. At the same time, it created the potential for more energy and more devastation if the dam were to fail.
      * 6-Jun-23 - Kakhovka Dam demolition charges destroy the structure. Russia fails to release on-site real time video of the dam failure. Russia claims Ukrainian artillery destroyed the dam, but multiple HIMARS slavos were required to destroy a small section of the bridge crossing the Dnieper River near Kherson Fall-22, so artillery destroying a concrete dam in a very short time is not credible.

A couple of points about the dam from an objective military perspective.
1- The bulk of the water went to the Russian side, drowning their own forces and destroying emplacements they have spent millions and months of time building.
2- This will not stop the Ukraine offensive. They have war-gamed this possibility and there are plans in place to adapt to new realities. The main offensive could never go below the dam because the water was a natural barrier to large scale operations. The bulk of the offensive will go through north of the dam and after the "pond" where the river is naturally much narrower.
3- If the ZNP is in danger then any fallout will not only effect Europe, but it will effect Russia, too.
4- If the Russians were reacting to what they felt was an offensive by the Ukrainians to cross the river, then they blew the dam too early. So it was ineptly timed, from a tactical military point of view. All that have done is make a mess to no good military effect. I personally think that someone in the Russian chain of command panicked.
5- Wholesale killing of civilians is a war crime. The officers who ordered this are directly and personally responsible and will be held to account. They will not be able to hide. The CCCP signed the Geneva conventions in 1954 and Russia agreed to abide by them in 1991. Russian propaganda of "you did it in WW2" doesn't work here. UK, US, China, Japan, Germany and Russia blew up dams in WW2 to awful effect and little military gain, which is why the Geneva conventions were signed. The west has learnt lessons over military actions like this and follows the rule of law. Russia does not.
6- The water will settle in three days. Was it worth points one to five to the Russian military? No.

It does have a small reserve separate from the lake, but without the dam, it is going to have a real hard time replenishing that reserve as water evaporates during summer. After the destruction of the Kachowka dam, Chancellor Olaf Scholz accused Russia of increasingly attacking civilian targets. "That's also something that fits in with many, many of the crimes that we saw in Ukraine that were committed by Russian soldiers," said the Chancellor in Berlin when asked about the possible consequences of the dam explosion. Russian forces would also attack towns, villages, hospitals, schools and infrastructure. "So this is something that has a new dimension but fits with the way Putin is waging this war."

The plants reactors have been shut down for about 6 months so decay heat should have declined to a point where a full blown Fukushima type meltdown is unlikely.
However, if cooling water is lost it could still damage the reactors, possibly to the extent they cant be recommissioned.
The loss of energy production from the nuclear power station as well as the loss of hydropower, will set back the economy of the region for at least a couple of decades.
