on my buddies swap, we put the glow plugs on their own switch without a timer. You can turn them on for as long as you want and leave them on for the first 10-20 seconds once it starts. really helps!

You might consider a flamestart/thermostart unit such as is fitted to Perkins diesels. You easily have the knowhow to fit on yr Merc. Screws into intake manifold, has a tapping from fuel filter and one hot wire to energise it. I fit them to engines with hard starting issues. Had a 6/354 Perkins marine engine that for 11 years took 30-40 seconds up to a minute of cranking to get fired up. Fitted a thermostart unit to it. Hit switch for 5-10 seconds and fires up now on 2nd compression everytime regardless of outside temp.
They come in diff thread sizes and wiring terminal arrangements. You may even get away from using glow plugs. All the little Pre-com Perkins only had that as a starting aid, no glow plugs.
    Just a thought.

I am in bed with a fever. I just watched this through two bloodshot blurry eyes. And it still makes me smile. You got good compression. Those rings are worth the trouble to replace. Theraflu and back to bed now. Thanks.

You can run 90% dewatered veggy oil with 10% gas to thin it out.
