    Great video, especially considering how hard it is to fit such complex and heavy topic to a short video in a humorous convention. I'm impressed by your pronunciation of most Polish names and words and think it's a pity you didn't take a shot at Karaszewicz-Tokarzewski. ;)
    BTW Tokarzeski was originally the first commander of the Service for Poland's Victory but got slightly demoted and send east partially because in the eyes of Sikorski he was to much a part of the pre-war Sanacja regime. Also, he was from Lvov (Lwów/Lviv/Lemberg whatever) so he knew the region, which turned out to be a double-edged sword because he was also well-known there, so a bit too recognizable.
    Germans actually went a bit further than the 1914 borders in the territories they directly annexed into the Reich, mainly to include the city of Łódź (pronounced like "woodge" or "wooj" or something like that), which had a sizable German community, because in XIX century it rapidly changed from a sleepy rural town to a booming center of textile industry attracting some German immigrants. The Nazi authorities renamed the city Litzmanstadt and kicked many Polish people out (including my grandma), also creating there the second-biggest Jewish Ghetto (after Warsaw) and the biggest within the Reich.
    Finally, the Kedyw wasn't just one battalion but many units. Technically it was an acronym of Directorate of Diversion, part of the Home Army's command, but all the elite units that were directly subordinate to it got called that. Most famous among them were indeed the Warsaw Assault Groups of the Grey Ranks (the underground version of the scouting association), which eventually formed the legendary battalions "Parasol" (umbrella) and "Zośka" (a colloquial, diminutive form of "Zofia" the Polish version of "Sophie", it was actually in honor of a certain guy, it's a long story).
    I can recommend a cool book about the life of Stanisław Aronson a Jewish member of a different Kedyw unit, who later became a colonel of the IDF by Patrycja Bugalska and Aronson himself. The English title is Years of Turmoil (followed by a ridiculously long subtitle basically explaining what the book is about, which is completely different than the original title but I digress).
    PS. I've heard the submarine joke you made on the M.Laser's podcast but I'll let it slide for now. ;)

      @HistoryHouseProductions  Před 4 lety +5

      I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video! I’m also glad that I didn’t strike a nerve with my jokes as that is something I worry about in these more tragic videos. Really cool information you gave me btw, I was vaguely aware of how Kedyw was multiple units, but the book I was using referred to it as a battalion, so I just went with that. Also, I didn’t actually make the Submarine joke. M. Laser did! XD I laughed at it though, so I guess I’m guilty as well. :)

    My grandfather took part in the NZS guerilla (National Forces). During the war not only the Russians or Germans were shot, but also Jewish bands that robbed and murdered people in the villages, but also Ukrainian nationalists. After the war, grandfather had to flee from east Poland to west where they did not know his past. The communists would shoot him. The second grandfather was a Policiant. He came to the Russians. Fortunately, he was not shot in Ostaszków or Katyn. The Russians handed it over to Germany. He spent the war in a POW camp. After the war, he couldn't find a job, because before the war he was a policeman and the communists harassed such people.

    • @turusan02
      @turusan02 Před 4 lety +7

      I am actually Polish. My grandfather fought both in Warsaw uprising and abroad. I can't speak for all Poles but personally, I don't put much weight into any alliances. We've already seen recently with Georgia and Crymea that if Russia wants to invade a country, it can get away with it without any military response from its allies. Poland is in NATO so that should help but If severe hunger hits again, like it did prior to WW2, I wouldn't be too suprised seeing NATO getting internally conflicted or falling apart and possibly Germany invading us again for whatever reason (habits, oh you). I just hope the world has globalised too much for a war in the middle of Europe. As for the UE distrust - not sure about recent polls, but I remember not too long ago most Poles being still pro-EU - it was so ever since we entered. However, the current (right wing, or so they identify themselves) government is kinda not too big on EU and strives to be able to rely on the USA for military protection. But yeah, we've learned to keep our trust limited.

    Love your content and way of (story)telling! Maybe one little suggestion; could you normalize the volume a bit? Currently speech seems very silent in comparison to other history youtubers while some sound effects sound as loud as the "Wilhelmus of Orange" by History With Hilbert, but he only plays it when the Netherlands is mentioned, so you get an early warning to turn the volume down ^^"

    I had several relatives involved in the Polish Underground during WWII. One of my aunt's belonged to a partisan unit operating outside of Lublin in eastern Poland. One uncle was in the Polish Home Army and was involved in several actions of sabotage while operating under a pseudonym. Another uncle escaped with the Polish Army and fought in France where he was wounded severely. He was sidelined for the rest of the war but served a staff position in England. He was relocated to Poland after the war.
