He’s top of my list. Solo musician who has lyrics everyone can relate to, speak from the heart, delivered in a unique voice that can rock hard or speak soft poetry. Technically up there with some of the best guitarists of the last 30 years, talented in multiple instruments and created masterpiece after masterpiece while also creating each with a different sound.

When I was a kid, my mom listened to Figure 8 on a cassette tape that didn't quite have enough room to fit the entire album on it. "Bye" was completely absent as a result, so when I found out there was a song after this one on the CD version...goodness. As if that wasn't haunting enough, this song cut off less than half a second after the line, "'til there's a ghost in every town." I never gave that much thought when I was younger, but nowadays thinking about it makes me feel somewhat misty-eyed. When my mom was purging most of her cassettes a few years ago, she asked if there was anything I wanted to hang on to. Figure 8 was the only tape I saved.

The thing I will always like about Elliott Smith is his smile and relaxed approach as he is playing. So many other players play all serious with their lip quivering as their eyes are shut and their head moving back and forth, but he just plays all relaxed and non-douchey. When he gets super into his playing he still comes off as a cool dude not taking himself too seriously.

He was just a Kid who believed in things different to everybody else, and yet he got himself fucked up because of it. But by losing himself, he helped others in realising who they were, and what they should do with this world. Thank you Elliott, You've helped us all in that little bit to get past all that is truly terrifying and beautiful in this social world of ours. I hope that the abyss didn't give you too harsh a hit.

Who cares about their popularity. It is amazing that people in my generation are actively listening to and being influenced by the Beatles today, but their real genius does not concern their popularity. Rather, they were some of the best pop/rock songwriters ever who pushed the envelope of their craft and reintroduced sophistication of song into popular music. They carry the torch for Classical greats like Stravinsky and have been credited by many critics as saving Western melody.

This tune makes me think of Elliott's progress as a song writer over the years. For instance contrast "Thirteen" to this little jingle. Had he been born in the fifties, when recording artists relied less on sampling and more on musical artistry and skill, Elliott Smith would have been a household name. Today's kids would crack open boxes full of old vinyls that their parents left behind in the attic and stumble upon 'Either/Or' or 'XO', spawning a desire to return to their folks' grassroots.
