- This is one of multiple videos in my Upland Dog Training Series. This Episode focuses on training your bird dog to follow a Scent Trail. This can be a great way to begin teaching your dog to use his nose to find birds. It is also a great way to build on a dogs natural tracking and retrieving ability.

Thank you I finally found a good info video on training my dog
Here I am laying here, watching your video to learn how to train my shothair, while using her as a pillow.
It’s the opposite for me she is using me as a pillow😂
Welcoming a german shorthaired pointer to the family in a few months.
We had three when I was younger, but for the past 10 years we've had a gordon setter.
I'm very excited to have this dogbreed again.Really helpful and awesome video, thank you.
What a sweet dog! Hope the years have been good for y'all.
I'm kind of happy to find out I'm not the only person that finds the beep noise on an e-collar more useful that the shock function.
First time ever watching you and I gotta say you do a GREAT job! There’s one thing that irritates me most and that’s when guys or gals don’t give the dog the proper praise - Excitement in the voice and genuine joy instead of some boring quiet “good boy.” Love this and love what you do!
Thank you!
I am hella glad Bo is alright even though it was a year ago still love animals and i love your videos
Thanks for the info. Wanting to take up pheasant hunting. Haven't been out since I was a kid. Got a 10wk old black lab pup and I want to train him so he can grow and learn alongside me. Helpful info, and very much appreciated.
Thank you for the video. I am going to do some scent drags with my lab, we will see how it goes.
Successful approximation at its finest. Good job
I used the same strategy to encourage steadiness from my lab. That mixed with more experience on the real thing has lead to pretty good sit to flush and shot..
Hey I liked your video very much and I am working with my new Choc lab puppy and a blast training him.
The give back is a good idea
thanks man. good info in here. I am going to buy that scent stick.
Let me know what other topics you would like me to cover.
Hey man great video!
Appreciate this video, i have same equipment. And new rescue dog, this will help
I came here cuz i have a Belgian shepherd and I think is a good idea
Greetings from Mexico
Awsome watching your dog work😊. Did you still use live birds as well as the training dummy to help scent tracking, pointing and retrieving? Just asking because there are definitely groups of hunters ( even hunters living in cities)that want to train their dogs to their great potential but do not have access to live penn raised birds/pigeons.
great viedo
REALLY GREAT videos bro.
That dog looks like a mix(more like a vizsla than a gsp although too dark)
Gotta ???? I gotta 8week old English cocker. Am I wrong to buy a quail or two, clip their wings and release in yard for pup to find...ima get the scent stick and start there.
Hi my name is Dan and I am a new owner of a GSP and would like to learn how to train my GSP for bird hunting. I see a few videos of you, training your dog and would like to learn more.
Do you put scent on the decoy and if so what type?
Hey love your videos man, I’m and upland game hunting in Idaho and just got a puppy lab, could you do a video on gun breaking you dog, I want to do it but I don’t want to scare him at all
Top dog, will try the give back!
what kind of camera mount is that on your dog?
Awesome video, man. thank you. How many days a week are you working with the dog?
Nic H In the first year every couple days I spend a good hour with them. From then on they are pretty set you just help remind them the process!
*sorry my mistake it happens at 10:40 when you talk about the pint of contact.
Was there a previoid comment im missing??
Got a question. When working with multiple dogs, what is the best way to train for flanking left and right? I know this is for birds, but I use different videos and adjust for game desired. I am wanting to train to hut rabbits and then birds. Thank you
Man, was really hoping this stuff would come naturally from hunting breeds. I had a pure breed lab growing up and she would point and try to retrieve skeet that weren't shot. Never trained and never hunted. Was all instinct.
thats a fine dog
Thanks! Stay tuned for more videos.
I want to start working with my gsp Beau. He is obsessed with retrieving sticks and tennis balls but shows little interest in the “pheasant” (I have the same one you use). What is the best way to get him interested?
My wirehair is the same way... im just startin him also
Between 8-9 minutes you explained the negative reinforcement when correcting him on a hold. Can you explain that more in detail?
Basically when he first picks up scent. I stand on the leash and if he moves. The jerk on his collar is a negative reinforcement
In reference to the lead, as apposed to the beep (collar). I say use the lead because it simply stops him and makes him remember (hold point).
The beep from the collar is a different ttpe of negative reinforcement I have trained into him. It is more a NO then a stop.
WRY Outdoor Media great thanks for the feedback
Nice dog 🐕
I have a 2.5 year old gsp. Never hunted before but he for sure has the instincts like I have never seen. Gonna start working with him on this. He hates fire works so I think he will be gun shy but I need his hunting nose to be on which will hopefully make him not worry about the gun sound. Any tips for starting with a dog that hasn’t had any training for almost 3 years.
Be really careful shooting a gun around him if he is scared of fireworks. Make sure you have a long leash on him in case he takes off. Also, feed him his favorite treats as the gun shoots, so that he is focused on that. As far as training, it is a complex answer. Start him on this video suggestions, introduce him to live birds in a cage (can be bought at Bass Pro)
WRY Outdoor Media ok I bought a pheasant wing today to give him to start to get used to the scent. I also got the dummy and scent stick as you suggested. I think he needs to get used to the scents. He loves to point at birds. Hell when we go to petsmart he goes right to the bird cage and points and stares. Sadly we don’t have a bass pro anywhere close to us. Best thing is fleet farm or gander mountain which is going to close. Any other suggestions? As to the gun I have been reading blank 22s to start out. Gonna see if playing ball or following a live scent might help him realize the gun sound is ok. I plan on having a very long lead rope with him so he can’t run. Sadly I have an uncle whom is a big hunter but doesn’t seem to be willing to help me. I wish I had the urge to hunt him when he was younger not now.

if i want my dog to hunt different species of birds, do i need to train him with multiple bird scent and dummys?
also if i want to hunt more than just birds like fox or something, then what should i do?
i would want him to be able to track birds and retrieve them for me and maybe bark them up in a tree so that i can shoot them in the tree.
i was also thinking about a german pointer.
and also duck and maybe rabbit
With the bird scents. I try to use the scents I will be hunting. But it is not necessary. Once the get going on scents, they tend to know it is still a bird. As far as the fox training. I am not sure, I have not trained a dog to tree an animal.
That's a lot of training, probably need to get a couple different things
What we did was finding a pheasant or duck on a road and letting him chase it
great man
How can I train my gsp not to eat the bird when he gets it help please
Corrections
I'm about to get a German shorthair/ lab mix, I think it might have a little blue heeler as well but do you think I'll still be able to train it to hunt pheasant?
if the dog has the instincts to hunt then yes. you could also work with it to increase its prey drive. GSP and labs usually have great prey drives for pheasant and upland. other breeds have no interest because its just not in their blood.
I just took my malinois out quail hunting and he has done pretty good job flushing them but he doesnt know the smell .high prey instinct any tips ? He loves going out there and i can control him pretty good as far as not going to far ahead . Next hunt is pheasant and idk i feel like he would be a great asset to the hunt juat dont kno
w if this breed will do fine or not . Any tips would be great and great video!
You talk a lot about a dog with a natural high prey drive what about a dog with a low prey drive. Is there any way to increase that?
No
Heel… heel…. Heel doesn’t heel still gets good boy! Confusing the dog
Owner an Dog are very handsome!
Thanks for posting
Awesome video! Do you sell training videos? Like from beginning training tutorials to more advanced? If not, which do you recommend?
Hi James, I do not. The good news is I am starting a new playlist on the channel for Upland Dog Training and will be looking to release a new video each week. I just uploaded the first video in the series "The STAY command" and how to teach it. Please check it out and leave a comment on the video stating what you would like me to cover next.
Looking forward to it! What did you say to your pup when you checked him while trying to get him to lock on point? Whoa, as you checked him?
Good vid, lousy location, sounds like you're on a freeway
No one really asked for feedback like that. Just leave it at good video.
Never run after the dog. The dog hunts with you not you hunt with dog
You should never walk back over the trail you dragged !
Poor bo had an attack and ur still making him hunt that's messed up there are so horrible people in this world
if you do not like hunting or dog training why are you watching this?
BS on the scent, not the real deal.
Dog tracks the birds breath, not a trail of gut emulsion.
Proof?
Walk a chucker slow and low, on the breath of the bird will be left behind.
You're young, you have time to getter better.
Frank Cambra your a nut
Nice shirt slick...
I think it's so sad making ur dog a hunter it's horrible but that's my opinion
That's the dogs purpose in life.
You’re a fuckin idiot Olivia. Not all of us want a shit head dog that just eats, shits and sleeps and has no discipline.
