Seeing this for the first time in the theater... surrounded by the usual chit chat, sounds of snacking, commotion and hushed conversations...until the beach landing scene. Silence. It's like the air got pumped out the room and everyone was in total shock. I've never experienced a moment in cinema like that since. It is THAT good.
Agree. Another Spielberg had the same effect - "Schindler’s List".

Same thing happened to me. The usual rustling of chip packets, low talking until the beach scene and then silence. Even when people walked out of the movie they were talking in hushed tones. Almost whispering.

I'm from Northeastern part of India a tribal place call Nagaland and we have a world war II mermorial cemetary where an epitaph has been put up that says ' When you go home, tell them of us, "For your tomorrow we gave our today".

That is the Kohima epitaph at the cemetery there. It was a savage siege between the Royal West Kent’s and a Japanese Division

To me, the most moving part of Saving Private Ryan was Capt Miller, as he was dying by the bridge, telling Prt Ryan to "Earn this; be a good man; live a good life" and at the end, beside Capt Miller's grave, Prt Ryan asks his wife if he has been a good man - it is something we could all ask ourselves: have we been a good person and earned their sacrifice.
When the medic died that was the most real shit ever. Knowing he was gonna die any second was sad you know that happened to millions of soldiers on both eastern and western fronts.
The one that got me the most was when Upham was paralyzed with fear and didn’t go in and save Mellish. I wanted him to come crashing in and save the day. But he hadn’t seen that kind of combat and was terrified. And not giving us, the audience that dressed up nice ending made it feel so much more intense. He had the gun. All he had to do was go up the stairs. Brutal.
Earning is a whole different level! Its having a Concience! We all need it! I do! Thanks for my freedoms and I ask forgiveness for your sacrifice on behalf of our great nation! GOD BLESS YOU ALL THAT GOT IT DONE!

My dad fought in the Battle of the Bulge. I don't recall him ever saying anything about it or the war. My mother told me once that he had nightmares for a long time. The greatest generation is an understatement.
My father went through the same thing. my mother told me that years after the war my father had screamed in his sleep.
He was a soldier for 5 years, and then 5 years in Russian captivity.
He fought as a sergeant on the Finnish Arctic Front.
And yes, he was a German soldier.

My grandfather served 30 years in the US Army eventually earning the rank of Colonel, and he told me that the D-Day invasion in this film was the most realistic depiction of combat ever put to film, specifically the overwhelming sound.
He passed away last year and will be honored at Arlington on D-Day of 2022. I’ll always cherish the memory of seeing this film with him. Rest In Peace Pops.

It is actually so realistic that some veterans left the theater during that scene, because of PTSD. In fact, even the army PTSD hotline got overloaded at the time because of veterans watching the movie and getting their PTSD triggered by it.
Different movie, different war, but for me after watching alone Survivor, only being home a short amount of time when it came out, it twisted my head around. The next day when I woke up, it was like I was back overseas all over again.

The opening scene was something no one has ever seen before. The whole movie was an emotional rollercoaster ride. When I walked out, I saw an older gentleman around his late 60's with his wife by his side. He could not stop the tears coming out and his wife was comforting him. I guess it reminded him of when he served in the army and what he had seen and what brother hood meant.

"Props" to anyone for actually getting it done; memorializing _on film_ how they'd like for events to be portrayed but while still a child and decades before that 'opening scene' was produced, I had conceived sequences that would make Spielberg's work resemble a trip to DisneyLand in comparison.
I had always felt that what Hollywood or 'the industry' churned out in terms of "War Movies" was for the most part insanely tame and lame, not coming even close to capturing the reality of war. I can't say that I vowed to right this perceived wrong or shortcoming however had life led me down the path of filmmaking I certainly would have made it a point to have had my hand in producing the battle scene to end all battle scenes; a monumental blend of the human and inhumane.
I was in high school when this movie came out. I worked at a movie theater. I started warning everyone about the beach scene. We had a lot opening weekend comment. I will never forget a man in a wheelchair saying that was Hollywood dear, out there on the beach it was x1000 worse. After the showings we had about 20 mins for veterans to come out on their own.

My father was in the SeaBees in WWII. After me digging a bit (my dad never talked about the war) he told me this: As the Marines finished up on the island they were on (never stated which island) there were bodies everywhere (Japanese) on the beach. He said looking back into the harbor he could see hospital ships the size of cruise liners that filled the harbor, every one of them fully loaded with wounded and casualties. He drank to forget it all. The most laid back man I've ever known. I miss him to this day. My hero.
My dad never talked about the war until late in life. Then it was the only thing he wanted to talk about. But that’s ok. His ship was hit by 2 kamikazes and 400of his shipmates were killed. He earned the right to bend my ear.

It’s was after seeing this movie, I was visiting DC when a plane load of WW2 veterans stepped off an Honor Flight visiting DC as 80 year old men, many for the very first time. The entire airport came to their feet and applauded these deserving men, many in tears of pride and joy. It literally brought me to tears knowing what these men had left behind and done across globe changing the world’s history.
It angers me greatly the idiots that criticize what these men did. They changed Europe, Asia, the US and countless other countries around the world for the better. My own father was one of the greatest generation that served. Semper Fi pop !!

I think one can do both. One can greatly appreciate their heroism and their sacrifices that brought liberty to many parts of the world, as well as criticising the bad sides they stood for.
My Mom flew into BWI with an Honor Flight. She had been WWll Army nurse stationed at Nocton Hall, UK. She was the ONLY female on that flight and the only one who wore her entire uniform (except the shoes which had rotted). What a day that was!

Exactly. I remember the sinking feeling I had when it did not win Best Picture. Shame on the Academy voters that year, and it is appalling that a piece of garbage film won instead. Actually, speaking of garbage, I heard that Harvey Weinstein had a major role in influencing that disgusting outcome. So... what has happened to him recently is karma at its finest I suppose.

My dad was a Viet Nam vet and not much scared him. When I took him to see this opening weekend and the lights went up as the credits rolled it was the first time I saw the look of fear in his eyes. On the drive back to his house he was silent for a while and the only words he said was, “I’m so glad you or your brother never had to go through that.”
Combat films as realistic as this are not to be taken lightly, when one considers sharing this film with someone that knows the smells in the air, and the taste of the grit of the real thing
@@email4664 Yes, apparently the US Veterans Affairs hotline was completely overloaded for 2 weeks after the movie was released, because it triggered PTSD for many veterans of WW2 when it came out.

I watched the movie in 1999 when I was 23 ,,,and the last scene put me in tears and led my life in a clearer way ever since, and as a result..Iam trying the best to be a Good Son, a Good Husband and a Good Father!....and still trying to be a Good Man!...RIP to the fallen soldiers !

My son is right now going through Marine Boot Camp in Parris Island. We all have a huge debt of gratitude to all military personnel and their service! Saving Private Ryan captures the realities of freedom.

My Mom was a WWll Army nurse (age 21) stationed at Nocton Hall, UK. She was unable to watch the first 15 minutes as she "met" many of the beach survivors who the medics could patch up and get back to England. She never talked about the war or her experiences other than to say she hoped her children would never face anything like it. I would take her on my business trips after Dad died so she wouldn't get too bored. While in Japan (6 weeks) she would tour around, by herself, while I worked. We would then talk about what she thought I'd want to see as my sight-seeing time was limited. My students, ALL adult males, were stunned that a 73 y/o woman would be touring around on her own and wasn't I worried. "Nope, I bring Mom with me because she's my bodyguard!" I explained her Army background and having grown up on a farm with older brothers had learned to hunt and shoot at an early age. They were pretty amazed! I relayed the story to Mom and we both had a good laugh. About 2 weeks before flying home there was a raucous party at the hotel that had awaked her. She quietly got out of her bed, tip-toed to my bed and whispered, "I'd take a bullet for you." She really was my bodyguard! RIP 1st Lt, age 91.
Thanks for doing this one. My Grandfather was an Engineer who landed on Utah beach. His job was to clear obstacles for tanks and such to get on the beach. He was killed by an MG -42 machine gun fire. Therefore I have a deep fascination with these type of movies and how events took place. Thanks again for the great reactions. One day I plan on visiting his grave in France. It's very important for me to see it in my lifetime. Anyway,thank you for your sincere reactions to these Heroes all. Peace to you.

This is without a doubt the best and most realistic war movie ever made. And the film has a bunch of incredibly talented actors. This film does that we who have only read about D-day get, if nothing else, a microscopic idea of the fear the soldiers must have felt. Terribly brutal without a doubt!🇺🇸
Just completely out of this world.... at least that's how I'd imagine it would have been.... I can't for the life of me imagine what it must have felt like, just the shear dread and horror you cannot feel if not by actually having been there.
It's insane....absolute madness. Nothing but respect for those who gave their lives in the name of freedom and peace, truly.
I am extremely saddened that most people today are ignorant of our history, and either don't know, don't think or simply don't care.. they take too much for granted. Even most who watched this movie, unfortunately they take it with a huge grin of salt and don't ponder upon it, almost as if it is there to depict a surreal world, as if those events only took place in some fictional tale. But no. This happened, this actually happened.

Nowhere near the best war movie ever made. Great first half hour, but after that pretty mediocre with humdrum characters and script. Very silly in places at the end. Not all that realistic. It turns into Kelly's Heroes Part 2 but not as entertaining.

It was also silly to be able to shoot through the driver's visor of the 'Tiger' to incapacitate the crew inside with ricocheting machine gun fire. The Tiger's driver view block had very thick bulletproof glass. You couldn't shoot through it.
Of course, in reality there were no Tigers in the American sector in Normandy, particularly not in the Cotentin Peninsula at the Merderet River. The 'Tiger' that comes over the bridge at the end has the insignia and red numbering of a 2nd Kompanie Schwere SS Panzer Abteilung 101 Tiger (Michael Wittmann's company) which was 100km away to the south east, fighting the British at Villers Bocage the very same day, June 13th 1944. As far as history goes, that was extremely silly.

They tossed a ton of grenades in, safe to believe it took the glass out somehow, Captain saw this and fired in, or you can just always see it as them messing up bts. I'd say a worse offense is the horrible way they attack the radio antenna MG42 nest.
The reason why Saving Private Ryan is one of the best movies of all time, it's because it tells a story that it just breaks your heart. I am 20 years old, and I watched this movie a few weeks back and once the credits rolled, I just cried.
This movie really makes you think about what these people had to go through. The sacrifices they had to do. And the things they felt during this awful war. I can't imagine what it would've been like to see this movie back in the day, on theaters, with people that lived the same things these characters did.

It’s weird how people forget that the United States was also fighting another entire war in The Pacific virtually on their own and won it.

i was fortunate to go to the 60th anniversary at Normandy, i met and had conversations with veterans of the landings, who were then elderly gentleman. Each had an air of humility and dignity that i will never forget. I took my 12 year old son who didnt really understand what went on there, but each elderly gentleman told him their story with patients and moderation. Its hard to imagine that many of them were just 6 years older than my son was then. The beach is vast, flat and ominous, the machine gun nests overlooking the beach have a terrifying panoramic view of the whole beach. The cemetery cannot be understated, it really is an ocean of brilliant white crosses and stars of David that stretch from horizon to horizon. I look at our societies now, our governments, our national policies and my sinks at how we have failed each and every one of these men.
Part that always gets me is when you see Ryan’s mom at home and she sees the army car coming down the driveway. She goes to sit on the porch. Tears every time

My father used to tell me every year on Remembrance Day that everything good that I ever get in my life, is owed to the great men who charged the beaches of Normandy, and fought and died for me and other people that they would never know. I will always remember that.

When I saw this in the theatres, every one of us was crying openly. It had a profound effect on me.
For me, it's really hard to pick which one is Steven Spielberg's best, either this masterpiece or Schindler's List, also a masterpiece

I’m with these other two gentlemen; SPR and Shindler’s List are great great movies, but Jaws is perfect from beginning to end. Not just Spielberg’s best, but _maybe_ the best movie ever.
My grandfather was a tank driver/infantry in WW2. He served in Africa, France, and Germany. I saw pictures of him with his arm around a soldier friend, drinking a beer, standing next to a stack of bodies. I understand now why he drank so much and why he was so mean when he wasn't drinking. I can only imagine what he saw and what he had to live with. God bless him. I'll see him again one day. Thank you grandpa and all your fellow Americans who fought.

Great video. My dad was in WWII. He served in the Army Air corps. Now known as the US Air Force. He never talked much about what his experience was during the war. But in my mind he did his service and played his part for the country. I think Saving Private Ryan reminds us there is a reason those guys were referred to as the greatest generation.

My grandfather flew in the Army Air Corps over Europe. I didn’t know him long, but long enough to remember some of his stories. The AAC had some of the highest casualty rates in the war. Don’t put a qualifier in front of your dad’s service.
My Dad, AAC, stationed at Barkston Heath, Lincolshire, UK. was called "Pops" because he was 23! Average age was about 19. Whenever asked about his service, "I had a job to. I did it to the best of my ability and came home."
Hanks is right when he said it's not hard to imagine what it must have looked like, but you could never in a million years imagine what it felt like. This is a movie, you have a script, you know how it ends. Back then those boys on the beach didn't know anything. They didn't know if they'd live long enough to get off beach let alone see the war through to its end. Those men fought in the worst war in the history of mankind, only comparable to those fought in the Great War.
Hanks is a jerk. He could NEVER imagine what it looked like in a million years. My parents lived the war in Poland. My siblings & I could imagine what it looked & smelled like from the horrific stories we heard.

I was a 2LT in the Army when this movie came out and the opening sequence still shakes me up. I finally made it to Omaha Beach at the age of 48 (which completed my bucket list of achievable things). I walked down to the low tide line, turned around, then noticed how much open space there was. I've studied history for most of my life and even then I simply couldn't grasp what that could have been like. I'd always had the utmost respect for anyone who was there, but that increased tenfold that afternoon, standing there alone

I've seen some of the Westwall bunkers and, as an old infantryman, wondered at the skill they were laid out, hidden and interlocked. Assaulting them would have been terrifying and horrendous - it was scary enough 70 years later.
I first watched this movie in the cinema and I was shocked by everything realistic. And then I went back to the cinema for twice. And then I bought the DVD and watched it for 20 times. From then on, I watch this movie from time to time. This is the masterpiece of war movie. I love everything about it, Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Spielberg, the facts about DDay. And then Band of Brothers. Not because I love seeing brutal war, it's because I'm so scared of wars and I really love peace.

The greatest generation. My grandfather fought in ww2 n Korea. Survived all that and came home to drive trucks. My grandmother was killed by a drunk driver and my grandfather then drank himself to death just 4 years after. I unfortunately never got to meet either. From my dad's stories he was a hell of a man

I'm Swedish and I'm so annoyed at the leftist, anti-American sentiment that is common here. We should be incredibly thankful for the American soldiers that sacrificed their lives(!) for Europe's and the world's freedom.
This film was not only well made but it was life changing....to see what these guys went through in this war truly makes one grateful for what they have. Still the greatest war film to this day.
I remember watching this in the cinema and from the beach landing scene until the end, everyone was open mouthed in awe. It really was one of, if not the first movie that really gave you a proper glimpse at what these brave men went through, and really makes appreciate their sacrifice.

The only movie I've seen twice at a theater. Everybody was crying by the end and I'm not ashame to tell that I'm still crying each time I watch it. I invite people to go to the US cimetery above Omaha Beach in Normandy. It's breath taking. You really take the measure of the sacrifice of these boys. I've been there several time and the lines of crosses, so many, and you read the names, where they came and when they died, at this point you have just one option salute them. Personally I stick in the grass a little US flag to thanks them for being free today in my country France. I. I'll never forget.
A moment in cinema I will take to the grave with me, As others have said, the hustle, bustle, chat, laughter and rustling of sweet packets……were suddenly sucked out of the room…..pure silence until we all left our seats. I laughed, I cried, I sat in utter disbelief….no other film has ever had such an impact on me .
I was 23 when this came out. Tom was old then. I'm older now than he was then. Crazy world. I can't imagine a world without Tom Hanks.

Great movie indeed. A great story of heroism. This is why I watch this movie every year non stop. Such an interesting movie that takes you through a roller coaster of emotions.

I just finished it today. This was my first time ever. I’m blown away. I was born in 91!
wow., I watched it on my own, twice, in the cinema in 1998 when I was 18. What an experience viewing for the first time hey. I was blown away too.
I have seen this movie more than 30 times at least, first when I was 15 and now I'm 33. Still blows me away every single time. I always fast forward the Upham collapsing on the stairs scene because I just can't deal with it.

When they storm Omaha Beach that was what shook me, I can not imagine the horror these man's went thru, each time I see those old vet gentleman standing outside the store accepting donation, I always shake their hands and hug them, even those who fought in the Vietnam, my parent ran from the war and my grandpa fought the commi with the US, they all still have nightmare, mad respect to all those who served, moment of silence for those that didn't return

I remember being in uniform. A fresh Lt in the Marines, and I and some friends went to see "Platoon". People actually were crying, and some older men, vets got up and walked out. Some of my friends said some bad things, until I admonished them for what they said. I lost a brother in Vietnam, 6 uncles served in WW2, it's what we do. To see this action on the big screen, just brought back the horrors to many of these guys, like the small things that trigger me today.
One of the most poignant things my grandfather ever said to me was when I told him I'd signed up to the army as a CMT, I thought he would be proud. But he said "what the bloody hell did you do that for? We did it so that you wouldn't have to!" I withdrew my application after that, joined the NHS instead.
My father was a sniper in WW11 - Canadian Army. He was 16 years old when he joined. Got shot on 2 seperate occasions. Had the silver dollar sized purple scars on his back as momentos. But all the alcohol in the world couldn't cleanse the mental scars the war inflicted upon him.....

When you are targeting through a scope, you have full awareness of the efficacy of your rounds. This, time over time, of confirmation of kill, would wear on anyone. Canadians tend to be more compassionate as well in general, so the thought of that many souls on one finger is heavy, no matter the reasons

This was done so real. When those men stepped off that boat. My heart was racing for all those men. Running to the beach... it's so real it's sometimes like being right there. Terrifying beyond words. At the end I cried so hard I couldn't speak.

All young people should be made to watch movies like these, so they know what war is like, who knows they may turn around to their political leaders and tell them “screw you, you go and fight”
I was just 15 when this came out in the cinema. I’m 40 this year. Over the years of watching it, I realise now that these men are young enough to be my sons. The things these men missed out on in life so I could have a free & fulfilled life… I try to live each day remembering at least for minute what was given.

I watched this movie when it first came out and was absolutely blown away. To this day, I’ve never seen a better war movie, but it’s my opinion that when Spielberg and Hanks made the mini series “ Band of Brothers”, they hit the jackpot. It’s no lie that I’ve watched that 10 part series easily 30 times because of the sheer realism and in the end I even felt like I knew some of the veterans who were interviewed and were part of Easy Company, 106th Airborne.
My grandfather was in the WWII in the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, incorporated to the American Fifth Army. Is good to see how was those times, for to knowledge the history. (Sorry for my bad english).

That first 1/2 hour was the most intense of my life. And it was just a movie!
This movie made me love my country even more than I already did plus having even more respect 🫡 and cherish this country because of all the men that made this country what’s ii is today! I’m not embarrassed to say the last scene made me drop a couple tears and movies don’t make me feel the way this movie did
Saving Private Ryan was the movie that motivated me to enlist when I was 17. To me there was no greater, no louder calling to honor those men and all of our fallen warriors by emulating them. When my mother had to sign the papers at the recruiters office she begged and pleaded for me to be anything but an infantryman but I knew that was something I could not do.
I felt like I had to prove my worthiness and earn my freedom the same way these men had done, so that’s what I did.
Only served a year in Iraq and it was hairy at times sure but it does not compare to struggles those soldiers faced, because our struggles were lightened by the sacrifices that generation made. I may be bad at a lot of things and have many regrets, but service to my country and the men that enlisted with me will always be a proud experience I hold dear to my heart.
So thank you Steven, and yes I’ve earned it.

Yeah. No soldier ever got paid that much for his whole basic training, never mind the 5 day "boot camp" they did. The actors did a great job, but not exactly worthy of sympathy.
Huge respect for the men and boys who went through this, brave lads. True heroes.

Tom Hanks ... a throwback to actors of the '40s ...
I walked out of that movie unable to speak because I knew if I looked anyone in the eye and opened my mouth I would break down crying. Coming from a military family, where in most all of us men served, it was all of the stories from all of us, up on a big screen in the most gripping way ever presented. I still watch it when it comes on tv, alone, and I well up every time.
I've had the honor, privilege and blessing to have interviewed over a dozen WWII veterans, all heroes.
Truly, the Greatest Generation! Not to dismiss our American Revolution, Civil War or World War I...but, thus far, the biggest on a global scale.

A wonderful movie hard the first 30 minutes I cried a lot seeing those brave soldiers getting killed.

That opening segment when the ramp drops on the Higgins Boat/LCVP/landing craft, and the men are chopped to pieces, is the most dense impacting film about combat I have ever seen. It left me gasping for air. I am a veteran but not a combat vet. I can’t begin to imagine how it felt to be in one of those boats. God bless those young men. They paid for my freedom.
It's time for another Spielberg WWII film. The TV series are amazing, but it's his films that started it all and lead to those series. Time for another great movie.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid, always been into all the war movies as a kid watching them with my grandpa, this movie & flags of our father always get me. 26 now and still watching this movie. It’s always hard to see the scene of the German putting the knife in the other guys heart.
Ive seen basically every single film ever worth making since the films of the 1920's all the way up to today & this is still my number one favorite to this day
for me as a German it still is the greatest movie showing WWII!
