Your channel is the BEST! I am soon moving to my own home, and I’m looking forward to gardening the heck out of that place! Thanks to what I’ve been learning from your channel, I have confidence and optimism about my new place. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for being thorough, concise, and incredibly helpful! ❤
Thx Dan.. wonderful garden .. beneficial earth worms feed on plant mulch too .. in my permaculture biodiverse garden living mulch just grows (small native plants fill every bare space) the birds or wind plants ‘em .. i allow if they don’t smother the veggies or fruits ,) 💚🕊
I've never considered using lemon grass. I grow it for seasoning lol. I'll have to give that a try, ty!
Same here.
In our area, the Bay Area, chard makes a good chop and drop and grows back as fast as comfrey. But my favorite is comfrey for all the same reasons you suggested. In my yard aloe grows and spreads super fast so makes a good cover crop for shading under trees. I use a sickle to hack it down and it grows back fast. The only thing is to put it in a place away from a main path cause the aloe blades are prickly.
Hello Dan. I pray you and yours are well. Some how I had missed this video and this is a great one. I’ll be looking for lemon grass especially since it can also help with keeping pest out. I appreciate you and your content always, thank you.☺️👍🏼
I just started some comfrey,, my main Shop and Drop is a sterile Mexican sunflower
Right on brother! The greenhouse is up, my seedlings are ambitious, the bitter wind has died down, I'm looking forward to a full day in the garden today!😎 looks great man. Keep up up!
I bought and planted comfrey roots last autumn. I hope to see them growing soon. We live in Michigan, so it is just starting to get warm here.
I started my first comfrey with root cuttings early last spring (I'm in Indiana zone 5a) and the plants all took off really well! Once they have started to flower you can push the flowering stalk over to the ground and you will get even more growth at the base and from the flower stalk. Good luck and enjoy your comfrey!
@@Randy_Smith this is the comment I was looking for. Seed prices are confusing, you pay a bunch of money and get like 10 seeds. I wanted to know how people were sourcing their plants. What yo describe with your comfrey is how my blackberry vines are growing. One long one I miss stretches over and touches the ground and makes new roots. I plant to dig them up and relocate them as they are out in the path of deer and mowers.
@@Metqa Glad to help. Just an FYI, I wasn't able to find comfrey starts at any of the greenhouses in my area and after seeing another youtuber post that he sold his cuttings on Etsy I did a search. I found a local grower who sold cuttings for around $10 for 4 pieces.
Whatever you do, don`t eat comfrey or make tea out of it. It may cause cancer, liver damage and lung problems. It`s fine externally.
I did the same here in western Montana! The snow is gone and there are little green leaves popping up so I think they survived. I think I'm going to add that fava this year too.
Thanks, Dan! Always love your videos. These are new ideas for me. Thanks for something new to try!
Thanks SIIR for this information. I have confrey plant. Will use that in my garden 😊
I also have comfrey which is indestructible. Another favorite of mine is borage. It reseeds every year and grows abundantly.
thank you
Thank you !
Loved this. My go to is Mullien. It makes great mulch and can be used to heal lung health
Excellent info!!! Beautiful garden :)
Thank You!
THANK YOU 💜🙏💜
I have the comfrey it comes back every year I also use the leaves also
Wishing you and yours a blessed Easter ❤
Rosemary, the creeping type the bees love it!
Thank you for sharing this information with us.
thankyou..I just picked a heap of comfrey for my chooks, turkeys, rabbits & guinea pigs..😊
I will be watching this multiple times, great info, I have started some comfrey but I had not thought of lemon grass as a mulch. Thanks for all the great videos.
We use comfrey Bocking 14 everywhere. We’ve just sown cardoon for use as mulch and we are collecting canna lilies to use as well.
Mostly though we use our own hay as we have more than 20 acres of grass we can cut.
I have Canna lilies. Never thought of using them as a mulch. Also have irises.
❤
I use Comfrey.
I love using banana leaves for mulch. I'm going to try lemongrass now! Thank you!
Thanks! I also use my dried fig leaves that fall from the tree in the autumn. They tend to be good mulch. Also the banana tree leaves that die or turn yellow tend to help protect the corm.
Great suggestions. You look fabulous, Dan!
Gonna git me some lemongrass!
Thank you, n blessings to you two
🙏🙏
Mimosa!!!! Very generous bio mass and nitrogen fixing❤️
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day and happy gardening 🌿🌱😊🤗
I use to make tea also very nice good plant
Another great video Dan! I've learned a few things , thank you 😊
Great ideas! I got Comfrey underneath tall plantings.
My absolute favorite mulch is tree mulch from tree company grinders. All sorts of insects love it turning to soil and it absorb nutrients & water releasing slowly to roots below. Stays fluffy (Air).
Creates a shiny cool protective crust that allows underneath to remain very moist in the shade of the crust.
I have multiple comfrey plants and use them as a tea and a chop and drop and also use wood mulch.
A good idea! 👍
After reading that it helps with pest issues, I started using rosemary as part my mulch.
❤ this > TY!
I use comfrey for chop and drop, I tried Sudan grass last year, but it becomes very woody.
Comfrey makes a great salve for aches and pain….I use it for my bad shoulder.
I'm in Indiana zone 5a and have started planting winter rye in my beds when they are finished in the fall. It produces a lot of green top growth that I use as mulch and it has a tremendous amount of root mass that helps feed my soil. I sow the rye in early or late fall and before the first hard freeze it's usually over 6" tall. It takes off and really starts to grow in early spring. The rye I cut last weekend was around 18" tall and it makes a great mulch for the beds. Rye needs to be properly terminated or it will keep coming back so make sure to do your homework on how to kill it off.
I love Mexican Sunflowers (tithonia diversifolia) it's a perennial in the south, Grows about 14 feet tall, and you can chop it several times a year.
These are great tips. I never thought of using my lemon grass for that. Do you have issues like with other grasses or straws where the lemongrass seeds sprout?
Hello have a good day.
Thsnks for these great tips ! Can these seeds of root starts be bought in our nursery’s or in seed packs?? God bless ❤️🙏🙋🏻
Niceeeeeee
Where are yor sources for all 4 of these live mulching plants?
Tree lucerne!
Where do/did you buy your comfrey? I’m sure you just grow from what you have now. Thanks for your content. It’s helping me as a new gardener
I got some root cuttings on etsy and thought they died but I had to be patient.
@@definitelyp8652 I’m assuming surviving transplanting them took them a minute to perk up? Ya Etsy has been almost the only place I can find it
👍
what do you think aboout milk thistle
do you grow these plants from seeds or do you by seedlings from a nursery? I can get lemongrass from my local Asian Food store.
Isnt cardoon thorny tho?🤔
Where can I buy that plant
I really enjoyed this useful video thank you! However i tried to "like" the video and it would not let me🤔
Where can I find comfrey plants? I have looked on many websites and am probably just missing it. But I am getting pretty frustrated....lol Can anyone share where they found their Comfrey?
Etsy has many sellers of comfrey. I bought lots of bare root and cuttings of various plants from different people there last year. Now as we warm up here in Utah I'll be able to see how much was able to make it through the winter
@@notxasj I’m in Utah too and I’ve been having a hard time finding it locally too. Someone else suggested cuttings from Etsy. Specifically Bock 14. Hopefully it survived this crazy winter here. I’d be interested to know. Good luck Janice Morelock
I have yet to find comfrey seeds, or any other way to grow them.
Boking 14 root cuttings are on etsy and that is how you propagate. It is infertile from seed. If you find a seed variety it can be invasive.
@@definitelyp8652 Thank you! I had no idea.
where can I find these plants? I'm in 9b/10a
Hi I am from India and have planted fruit plant in my orchid can you suggest any name which will be available in India because in your video I had not seen any plant which I think will be available in India thanks
What is the biotanical name for Cardoon plant?
Cardunculas
@@plantabundance Thanks for your quick reply!
I have trees that have been cut low and I use the new branch sprouts as compost.
