  • Some time ago I added remote central locking to my mx-5 that didn't come with it:
    • Retrofitting Visteon r...
Whilst it did have the actuators in the doors, it did not have the necessary part for the boot release. Rob at mx5bitz.co.uk was kind enough to provide me with a solenoid equipped version which just left me needing to figure out running the relevant wiring to make it work.

Really useful, thanks (and the previous video). I'll be trying to replicate this in the next few days.

Just for reference, it worked a treat. It's ridiculously satisfying to be able to 'plip' the boot open! 😁

Great, I'm glad the video helped. I agree, it's a very satisfying upgrade to the car ;-) plus the weather is starting to give us proper top-down days to enjoy.

Thanks for this, I've got the same car and will be doing the same job once I've got the bodywork all sorted.

No worries, how much body work do you have to sort? I'm kind of expecting I'll need to do some kind of rust remediation in my future.

@@MakerGeek Wheel arches were replaced but never painted properly so have gathered some surface rust, needs cleaning and preparing properly, battery tray has a big hole in it so needs a new panel making up. Everything else has been sorted, chassis rails at the front were the only real pain to sort, but there's pre-fabbed panels available for everything.

Is the relay a mazda item as well? I used your previous video to wire the doors but i've got no boot release, would like to copy again but might take some figuring out...lol.. cheers and good work

I believe it is. Rob at mx5 bits sent me the relay along with the latch. Though I can't imagine there is anything particularly special about it. Just need to figure out the right triggering/load voltage requirements.

    Well done.

Hi, would the original latch work ok? So we just need the white plug/unit. Thanks

sorry for the slow response. youtube apparently stopped giving me comment notifications. I think the problem is that the solenoid that drives the latch is integral to the latch mechanism. so it is a different unit rather than just a minor delta to the non remote version.

Nice! Glad you got it all working. Did you run the signal wire to the anti-theft unit or did you not have any issues with the alarm going off?

    • @MakerGeek
      @MakerGeek  Před 2 lety

No issues with the alarm. Just ran the wire from the receiver unit direct to the relay. Does the Microswitch from the lock mechanism do sometime to the alarm? I'm not sure what else it would be doing

@@MakerGeek The way the alarm works may just vary from car to car. Mine would set the alarm off if I had the doors locked and then opened the boot with the fob until I ran the extra signal wire to the anti-theft unit.
The microswitch/lightswitch is where the car knows if the boot is open or not and is the trigger for the alarm, however it doesn't disarm the alarm itself. The alarm needs to be disarmed before the latch opens to stop the alarm from going off and there are 3 ways this happens:
      1. Unlock the car, disabling the alarm.
      2. The key barrel in the boot has a microswitch which disarms the alarm when the key turns, before the latch opens.
      3. (in my case) The signal wire running to the anti-theft unit disarms the alarm before the latch opens when you press the key fob button.
If the boot is open and you lock the doors, the alarm won't arm itself until the microswitch is closed, so you could argue that it arms the alarm, but does not disarm.
I think that made sense. I've written this comment about 5 times now and I always end up lost in my own words by the end of it!

Yeah that makes sense. I'm not entirely certain mine even has an alarm. Not sure how I'd check

@@MakerGeek Sounds like you might not have one if you don't have the same issue I had. I can set the alarm off in mine by locking the car and then pulling the boot release cable in the center console. That's probably the easiest way to check.
