    This was delicious. (Almost) as good as how we make it in England.
    May I clear up the issue of what this dish is actually called, without folks having a go at me. My Granny taught me how to make it, donkeys years ago, and told me the difference between the English version and the Welsh version.
    This version is actually the English COTTAGE pie, made with ground beef (or minced beef as we call it in England), named so because the golden potato top resembled the thatched roofs of the old English cottages.
    SHEPHERDS pie is the Welsh version, made with lamb mince. (The clue is in the name). Both are equally as delicious, so what the heck what we call it.

      I understand it is trivial in the name, however it's not. I just wish people would call it what it is, it is not that difficult.. There is a totally difference in flavor from Shepherd's to Cottage pie. I love them both.

    Hi Laura, accidentally took this recipe to a whole new level. I had failed to buy enough ground beef so I rummaged through the freezer and found some mild Italian sausage. Defrosted in microwave and removed the sausage from it's casing. Followed your recipe except for leaving out the Worcestershire sauce as I did not think is was needed with the spiced sausage. Wow, best shepherds pie I ever made. 2/3 ground beef 1/3 Italian sausage. Give it a try and you'll never go back. Love your stuff !! (Vancouver, Canada)

    I put a layer of shredded cheddar cheese between the beef and mashed potato layers! It's my favorite addition. To the potatoes, I add a little bit of heavy cream, sour cream and butter to add some creaminess and extra flavor. I also add a little bit of cheddar, salt and pepper to the potatoes.

Not everyone likes lamb you can use what you want that is what cooking is all about you can add something that you like. I personally do not like lamb I do not like the taste of it, she could also feel the same way or the lamb is pretty price is a matter of preference.

    • @genevablanc
      @genevablanc Před 9 lety +4

      She called it that way, probably she did not know about cottage pie who knows. She did clarified about the lamb and beef which shows that she knew the traditional shepherds pie. Again she kept on saying you can do the traditional way she is going to change up a bit. That is what she does she changes many recipes and says if my nonna sees what im doing in the Italian tradtional recipe she would be angry. Even when she cooks with her father she changes things.

      You just don't understand that she's calling it the wrong thing. It's not a shepherd's pie. It's a cottage pie. That's just a fact. And since she knew that it was properly made with lamb, she knows full well that she's making a cottage pie and not a shepherd's pie. You can change what you want but at least know wtf you're talking about.

      I do understand and I am not Laura I do not know why she did not called it a cottage pie nor I know her to ask her. I just stated probably she did not know about cottage pie who knows. She has not responded to any comments so I do not know but she did stated you can do the traditional way or not. This is when people make a decision if they want to make a shepherds pie or not. Like I said I do not know if she knows about the cottage pie if anything contact her personally I do not know her to affirm anything.

    interesting choice of ingrediants but ive always found with shepards pie that you can over do it on flavor. All you need is minced beef, carrots ,peas ,potatoes and some really tasty gravy, which if you cooked everything properly you will have in the finnished product. I drain all liquid off to make the gravy but just leave a little in the dish to steam throuh the filling. Still what a recipe and the gorgeous laura is right it varys from family to family.

    I don't know why everyone's commenting to make her correction, since she already knows that it's made with lamb meat. She said in the beginning it's traditionally made with lamb meat. She just like's beef better, so she used it. No biggy.

    Hi laura love your videos, I just to give you a little tip in most of your videos I see you struggling with the plastic wrap seems like the roll keeps popping out, on every box of plastic, foil, wax paper there is tabs on the sides that you punch in and that tabs holds the roll in place a lot of people dont know the tabs are there, I was tired of the roll popping out too until I seen those tabs. Who knew!! Have an awesome day.

      Sophie Mckayleen when did you last see a shepherd look after a cow? No sheep ain't Shepherd. Pretty simple. Cottage is a more flexible term, usually it means beef but it can mean beef and other meat. Cottage usually means beef or combo meat pie. If you aren't sure what to call it call it pot pie. To avoid the butthurt bitches
