How to Turn a Closet Into Built In Open Shelves

  • I've been hard at work with our bathroom remodel and while most of it is still in pieces, I did manage to put something together this week to share with you!
    When we originally decided to remodel our bathroom, I had wanted to tear out this closet completely. We didn't need the storage space and I didn't like the boring, basic closet here.
    However, since the ceiling was textured, tearing out these walls would have involved patching and trying to match the texture and it was more hassle than it was worth.
    So, instead of removing it, I decided to keep the existing structure and just rework it into something a little more...custom.
    I turned the basic closet into some built in open shelves perfect for storing towels, toiletries, or just adding some simple decor to our new bathroom.
    You can check out the full tutorial on the blog here:

    I'll have plenty more projects to share throughout this remodel, so be sure to follow along so you can see all the progress!

    I did the very thing! I had 2 closets side by side in my dining room, they were only seperated by a sheet of drywall, didn't make sence. So I took out the drywall, took the door off built the shelves shallow and still had access to the back of that closet through the other one. I store my vacuum there and other things. I trimmed out the shelves on the front and now it looks great. I even added a light to it!

    I really like this idea! We have a small linen closet in the hallway across from our main bathroom that we hate. It’s just become a catch all for the extra towels, soap, bandages and other crap that we really don’t need anyway. I also love how you said that you were a hot mess of indecision on this project. That’s me on almost all my projects. I can identify with so much of what you do and how you do it. I used to follow another CZcams channel that was very similar that way but stopped because all he wanted to do “grow” his woodworking which was fine but he got focused on getting tools that guys like me can’t afford or justify, like a CNC machine. Great for him and guys with roomy workshops but irrelevant for people like me who want project ideas but work out of a garage that has to stay a garage. You’ve grown your shop, your range of projects and tools but haven’t left us home diy folk’s behind. I appreciate that and that’s why I can’t wait for your videos to come out. I have many of them saved as inspiration that I want to build someday. Thank you so much for what you do!

    Definitely agree that the shelving looks better than the closet. Having open shelving is a motivator to keep things tidy. Glad you repainted the back wall. The black made it look like you could walk straight into an abyss. Looking forward to seeing more of the remodel.

  • @archael18
    @archael18 Před 2 lety +2

    When you were measuring your door after painting, there's a trick for a more accurate measurement than having the bend of your tape at the top and having to guess. Make a mark from the top at some number, let's say 10 inches, then measure to your mark very accurately and just add 10 inches. Takes but a second to do and it's much more accurate.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the tip! That’s a great idea. In this case, I didn’t need accuracy as I was making my box under size anyway to allow for wiggle room to get it in place.

    The visual appeal of this cubby/closet is amazing. I am far too messy to replace a closet with an open concept like this. I have to have a closet in which to cram all of my bathroom stuff/junk, but an organized and naturally neat lady like you can really rock this look.

    I am 100% loving the way this turned out. I would love to do the same for our bathroom, but we are in a rental. Ours is a very small space so having the door open just makes the space that much smaller. This is great and really gives a look of elegance. Because ours is a tight space we don't waste any space so I think if I was doing it in our space I'd make the bottom area a drawer as let's face it, not everything that is kept in a bathroom are meant to be viewed on a shelf. Great job and love your channel.

    Missed you last week Shara, but I Guess I can permit you to have a little vacation when a holiday is involved! I really like this weeks project, and even though you were a self described “hot mess” during the project, I believe you may have solved a problem that’s been plaguing me for a while!
    We’ve got a big cubby in a basement bathroom, that did have some rudimentary shelving in it, but those have been demo’ed already. A closet just isn’t practical for that space, but shelving like what my favorite (maker/creator/influencer/CZcams-sensational) Engeneer has developed here, might just be the exact answer! 👍🏻 😁

    Noticed that you put a full piece of baseboard trim along the wall where you were going to be installing the new vanity. Am now wondering why you wouldn’t have left that trim loose for now and then attached once the new vanity was installed since it would be much easier to butt that trim up to the new vanity rather than scribe the vanity base to the trim or require additional adjustments with the how the vanity abuts the wall. Eager to see or hear what you did here although it may very well have just been an afterthought and has now been corrected like the black interior of the wall storage. Great job and I enjoy your videos.

    The open shelving looks great. My only concern would be the bathroom (ahem) particles (cough) on all the fresh linens. You may have a setup in your bathroom that negates those concerns. Another great build though!

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! Yeah, that’s a good point, but it’s about ten foot from the toilet, so it’s not really a concern. Plus our actual “linens” we use aren’t pretty enough to display so they’ll be hidden away 🤣

    I'm surprised you didn't make the bottom a drawer just so that you didn't need to do drywall work.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před 2 lety +1

      I do prefer drawers over drywall work 🤣but I was already drywalling other parts of the room, so this wasn’t too much extra to add on to it. Plus I think it looks a lot cleaner being centered vertically and less busy with the smooth drywall surrounding it.

    Do you prefer the Kreg guide with circular saw to a table saw? I’m just building up my tools as I’ve been borrowing up to now but will have to solve for these wider cuts eventually.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před rokem +1

      I use my kreg rip cut or accucut over the table saw for everything I can possibly cut. My table saw is always the last resort…personally.

      @@WoodshopDiaries that is super helpful, thanks!! Definitely easier to store vs a table saw also :) building everything out of a one car garage so the smaller space impact, the better!

    I just found your channel. I love it. I use many of the same tools you do. I have recently started using pocket hole joining. Question, I’ve noticed on several videos when building boxes you don’t clamp the plywood together prior to screwing them together. I’ve tried this and I find that as the screw tightens it moves the wood a few mm off my mark. How do you avoid this? Thanks.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před 2 lety +1

      I’m so glad you enjoy the videos! I very rarely clamp my pieces when driving screws. I’ve found it quicker, easier and just as precise to just hold them. I have a video here sharing how I do it:

    What was wrong with the original vanity? 🤔It looked gorgeous 😕
    @3:36, I definitely would've turned this into a secret swing door/shelf thingy 🙂. Of course the shelves wouldn't have been as deep but It would still be so cool lol. I have a thing for secret compartments 🤪. Nevertheless, great project. Thanks for sharing
