    I been a MRI tech for 4 years! If you have high anxiety I have a few tips for you! Bring a friend or family member to come in room with you! Ask if they have music for you to listen while getting scanned, cover your eyes with a wash cloth or ask your doctor for a sedative before you schedule the test. Also ask the tech to give you a count down during the scan. Ask them to talk to you every 3 minutes. This really helps.Remember breathe normal. Pretend you are going to sleep or think about a fun time and just focus on that. Avoid caffeine. The tech will always give you a emergency call button if you have to come out. Ask if you can take a look at the machine before the scan. If this fails , look for a open mri in your area.

    Thanks for your question. Of course it may vary depending on where you are having your MRI done, but we do have an entire section on our site about what to expect when getting an abdominal MRI at Sunnybrook (we can't link in these comments, but it's under Departments>Medical Imaging>Patients&Visitors>MRI>Patient Prep. The gist is: You should cease eating and drinking for four hours before the exam, but oral medications can be taken with a small amount of water. This is not medical advice.

    Some MRI machines/experiences are a cakewalk and others can be nearly traumatizing. If you have nerve tingling/pain from a neck/back problem expect it to be much worse in the machine due to hard surfaces and cramped quarters. Pretend you're an earthquake victim waiting for your rescue team and you'll be okay!

    @drlmala Thanks for asking. Our MRI Charge Technologist says: Specifically surgical closure clips/staples are fine. However not all clips/devices are considered MRI safe. As part of “normal process”; MRI staff will review your previous medical history with you before proceeding with the test using an MRI screening form that you fill out. By doing so they can verify if it is safe for you to have an MRI. We hope that helps!

    @gnortonshores Great question! A response from our MRI charge technologist: You may be able to see muscle tears and strains on an MRI. However, you should discuss with your physician if an MRI would be of any benefit or would even change your course of treatment.

    If you have 40 metal surgical clips/stapels inside your body, can you still have an MRI done safely?

    Hi there - it would be best for you to call the MRI department directly with your questions. Unfortunately, we can't talk about specific cases on here. In general, about 10% of patients feel uncomfortable during the scan, so you're not alone. You can also read our FAQ here: bit.ly /MRIfaq

      @SunnybrookHospital  Před 8 lety

      +Noah Talbot Hi Noah - While we can’t comment on your specific situation, patients receiving an MRI can expect the exam to take 1 - 2 hours (although this is a general figure, and the length of the exam may vary). Wishing you well!
