TWO MONTHS with the Chromecast with Google TV: The BEST Streaming Stick?

  • The chromecast was dirt cheap. And provided the feature of taking whatever is on your phone’s display and pushing it to your TV screen. And this is the next evolution of that. The Google Chromecast with Google TV, which takes that feature, and combines it with all the features that normally comes in a TV that has the Android TV OS. Is this thing worth $50? Let’s find out with a little review.

When you open the box you’ll find the Chromecast, a remote, 2 AAA batteries, a usb c to usb a power cable, and a usb power brick. The remote has a power button and TV input button on the bottom and also has a CZcams, Netflix, Home, Mute, Back, and Google Assistant Button.
It has 4.5GB of usable storage available to you, Wifi, bluetooth and support for resolutions of up to 4K60 FPS with HDR. The Chromecast with Google TV has all of the features of old chromecasts but now you get all the features that used to come with Android TV. For people unfamiliar with Android TV OS, it’s basically a modified version of what runs on Android smartphones but tweaked and tuned for a Television screen. Which means you can download many of the apps you normally find on android.
The UI is snappy, but I found that sometimes it does get a bit stuttery if you go around it too fast, or when the chromecast has to load too many things off the internet at once. Apps do take a sec or two to load up but I never felt it was too slow. Performance in each app varies, and the google assistant behaves how it does on other devices, and you can even get it to play certain shows or even CZcams channels. But you have to make sure that those apps support being opened by the Google assistant. If you download a web browser, like Puffin Browser, you can even surf the internet on your TV. If you have a CZcams TV subscription, the channel listing appears under the “Live” tab. And you can quickly view what’s on TV that way. The “For You” tab is basically a summary of all your streaming applications. From here you can resume your live TV sessions, shows and movies if they’re from supported apps, sorry Crunchyroll, see your recommended shows, and even open specific shows from their respective apps. For example, Since I have a netflix subscription. If I click on this show in the Google TV interface, it will automatically open Netflix and the show’s screen to let me pick an episode. The other tabs are kind of self explanatory, Movies has the currently popular movies, and from here you can open one from a streaming app you have, or purchase it. Same goes for Shows. Apps is where each of your individual apps lives as well as a place to view new apps you might want to download. Library is where your purchased collection of entertainment would go. But mine is empty.
Because this is running Android TV and has a usb type C port. This opens doors to tinkerers and some tech savvy users. With a usb type c dongle and a higher wattage power brick, you can plug in external devices. It’s basically a $50 android dongle. It can also emulate some old school games like from the Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64, PS1, and PSP with not too many issues.
How does it compare to other streaming devices? The standout features that separates the Chromecast with Google TV are its massive app library, versatile software and value for your money. When you look at android TV devices, popular ones are the Xiaomi MiBox S and Nvidia Shield. And this undercuts both of those devices while touting better hardware and features than the MiBox S, while the Shield costs 3x as much for a better gaming experience.
My conclusion of the Google Chromecast with Google TV is that it’s a fantastic little streaming dongle. I can’t find much to complain about because it does so much for $50. It would be a fantastic option to make your dumb TV smart, easily take all your entertainment with you on trips, and replace your aging smart TV’s operating system with a fresh one. Or replace your current TV’s OS with Android TV. Regardless of what you’re trying to accomplish, this is a great streaming dongle that covers the majority of people’s needs. So, if I were looking for a streaming stick, this is the first thing I’d look at.

Regarding the aspect ratio/cut-off edges problem: That happened on my Google TV as well. I then had my TV re-apply its standard 16:9 aspect ratio (via TV settings, not via Google TV settings) and everything looked perfectly fine afterwards (and still does). Perhaps I just got lucky, but worth a try!

You can not switch between profiles so for families/households its not a great option. End up seeing a ton of mix matched content on the For You screen from everyone that watches it.

I really like the new Chromecast with Google TV. Having a remote with a mic just makes it easier to find what your looking for. It feels good in hand (although I wish it had a “find me” feature because it’s easy to loose in couches) and good button layout. If you have kids or others that want to watch tv you don’t have to give up your phone for it. It integrates well with NEST cams. It has saved me from having to get up off my couch to see who’s at the door. Ok

Was an Apple TV user for years but hated the entire Apple experience being a android user forever. The Apple TV box gave me a streaming service that was smooth and sort of customizable, however their security and login issue made working with that box such a pain and all the other android boxes were limited in what they did even Chromecast. Now I just purchased this new unit and can I say simply its been a life saver and the rest need to lift their games as this unit will be the benchmark now for the coming years. Its intuitive sets up as easy as plugging it in and this will suit those that are technologically challenged all they need is a google account. Thanks for the vid and this for me at least it the streaming product of the decade. Thanks

I bought the original Chromecast when it first came out and it has legitimately been on and playing something 95% of the time I've had it with no problems at all. I just upgraded the 4th gen and my only complaint is there are soooo many more ads on youtube where as the first gen will only show me an ad every 5ish videos. Also all of the ads require you to pick up your remote and skip it each time which is annoying as hell when I'm just trying to fall asleep to the TV. Otherwise it's great, I love that I can link it over Bluetooth to my speakers/headphones now cause I couldn't figure out a way to do that on the old on even though it had a Bluetooth chip for setup

    • @Jurtaani
      @Jurtaani Před 2 lety

This is exactly one of the reasons why I opted for full on Android tv device instead of just older cast only chromecast.
With this chromecast with Google tv and other Android tv devices, you could sideload something like smart youtube next and get ad free CZcams experience with the same user interface as the regular CZcams app.
Only "issue" is that you have to figure out how to send over and open up the installation apk file of that CZcams client.
Because naturally Google has not allowed it to be on play store.
I have no experience how well it works with chromecast with Google tv, but on my 2017 Philips 55pus7272 android tv, it works fine all the way up to 1080p. But apparently the cpu on the tv is not strong enough to decode the 1440p or 4k streams.
But to my knowledge this stick should be more than capable to playback anything up to 4k hdr.
I had Nvidia shield tv 2017 but the 500gb hdd died and i had to go back to use the Philips built in Android tv for a while, but i have ordered this one to see if it is indeed capable to play 4k hdr on CZcams.
Edit: my chromecast with Google tv arrived and it indeed is easily capable of playing 4k 60fps hdr videos on CZcams, using the original CZcams app or SmartTube next.
It also easily handles my own movies on my kodi media center library from my computer, and thanks for the latest updates available storage space has gone up to 2gb and there is better tools to quickly free up more.
But to be honest at least on my use where most of the content comes from the internet anyway, there has not been any kind of problems with space with it.

Yeah Google is really leaning into ads so harshly that I am leaning to migrate to Apple TV. I love this device and I have 2. Its great value for money. But remember its cheaper because they're selling your data. All the recommendations and content is being sold. I actually enjoyed this feature at the start about 5 years back. It was very minimal at first, just algorithms for preference at a less aggressive pace. Now its just ads shoved in your face and down your throat. I'm grandpa enough to remember when CZcams was fucking amazing because it had NO ads. Its sad what it has become.

Even though it's capable of medium-level emulation, the limited storage complicates the issue. While you can use a USB-C powered-hub, compatibility with these is very spotty, so you may throw another $50 away trying to get external storage to work.
It's a decent enough streaming and Kodi box, provide you're not relying on local storage for the latter.

This is my favorite secondary/travel streaming stick, but I'm still rocking a 2019 Shield TV pro for my main streaming box at the moment. Unfortunately the Chromecast with Google TV runs into the same audio format limitations that the latest gen Apple TV 4K does which keeps it from becoming my next replacement as my main streaming box. The Apple TV while on paper providing the same video formats as the Chromecast with Google TV actually seems to more consistently actually work properly with HDR10+ content more often than the Chromecast. This gives the new Apple TV 4K the edge for me as if I have to make a trade off on Audio to get something that both does HDR in CZcams, and properly supports HDR10+ for my Samsung TV. This is however a great device that stays hooked up to a TV in my office unless I'm traveling as it is much more convenient to travel with than a full box like a Shield TV pro or Apple TV 4K. Still a great device, but it is a secondary device for me.

    1. Can I connect my BT headphones to this Cromecast with Google TV?
1.1 If yes. Is it possible to connect 2 or more BT headphones to hear the audio through them at the same time? (Like on laptops, ...)
    2. Is there an app to use Philips Hue-Sync like it's possible on the Android smartphone/tablet with e.g. EssentialHue?
    3. Where can I see which Android apps are supported by it? Or are all Android apps (.apk) supported which I have on my smartphone?
    4. How good can it be controlled by the Google Assistant from the Google Home? Can it start itself and the TV?

I'm completely in the android ecosystem. My only issue is when I search for a movie and find that the only service that carries it is Apple TV. Or Microsoft Store, which I of course can stream from my PC, but which is a lot more cumbersome.
I'd probably have bought the new Chromecast already if it was available here in Norway, but I see that Google is taking their sweet time. Now my options are:
1: Wait it out until Google finally brings it here, which might not be until the summer.
2: Parallel import from some other country that already has it. Which ones have the same power sockets as us? It'll probably be more expensive.
3: Splurge on an Nvidia Shield instead.

yes, mine controls the TV on/off and the sound-bar ON/OFF & volume.
Your results may vary as not all TV and sound-bar are supported but there is a lot that are supported.
I purchased it without knowing about this feature. It was a very good surprise. The initial setup will prompt you to get it going.
It is worth $50 even if your TV is not supported in my opinion.

I like to use my TV's own OS because it's not the bottom of the line model (Sony XBR900H) and because of that, the processor is able to let me move around the menu with enough snap to keep me happy. Otherwise I usually recommend a Roku device. But now I really want to give this a try and see what I think. I'm a Google house already, this might be useful. Nice video!

I have an Android TV and it pretty much matches the experience here, except in Ireland we have less options and the LIve TV options are not very intuitive. The EPG for live tv is however terrible in my opinion... That being said, the OS is very easy to use in most cases.... Other than the sometimes multiple button presses to get somewhere.... Try going from an Antenna feed to a Satellite feed...There must be 9 or 10 separate clicks and moves to do...

I've tried a few streaming devices and thought that the Roku was the best thing since sliced bread, then I started to get WI-FI connection problems, reading up on the problem I discovered that it is a software problem that Roku tried to fix with firmware updates, but they failed, so I bought the CCwTV dongle, after installing it I soon realized this is far better than the Roku, The connection to WI-FI is instant and doesn't suffer from dropout or lag (I'm using my phones WI-FI signal as I don't have landline internet at home yet) the choice of what to watch is way more than you will ever need, the layout of the homepage is clear and the settings section is easy to navigate through and very intuitive, it's early days yet but I score Roku 7/10 CCwGTV 9/10. the colour option is kind of fun, blue was my choice, the small controller can switch the TV off and on also adjust the volume (so you just use this one small controller for everything !) and the voice assistant works every time, even with my thick dialect and missing teeth, I think the fact that Google and Android have worked together on so many things now means this is the choice for smart TV owners from now on. And tech-savvy people will love it because of the input options, hook it up to other devices, run games through it, the options are endless,

I use an Android media box called Unblock. It comes loaded with their own app to watch foreign shows. Many of these devices are a bit wonky. Poor menu design, no English menu, poor search function, service interruption, etc.... Even with those flaws, it's worth it to cut your cable. I've had it for many years. It was wonky at first, but I got regular software updates.
